The president of Microsoft's Windows unit, Stephen Sinofsky, has again pointedly clarified that new ARM tablets running Windows 8 next year won't actually run existing Windows apps for PCs.
This is a bit of a blow, as I expected, perhaps naively, that the tablet would run the same apps as the desktop, but apparently not.
I'm not sure if this means that developers will need to re-write or adapt desktop apps for the tablet version of Windows 8, my guess is that there will be 2 app ecosystems. Does anyone know for sure?

That's hardly surprising isn't it? ARM is a completely different architecture.
But if MS can pull it off, W8m looks like a really nice interface doesn't it? :)

didnt I say there will be no software?!
Wtf? Why are they using ARM chips and limited API's?
These companies keep trying to recreate the iPad instead of doing something better. What's the point of it?
The point, IMO, is power consumption and battery life. The industry approach of just shrinking down the conventional computer was leading to devices with very limited run-times, big, heavy batteries, and too hot to hold comfortably.
Apple showed everyone an alternative. Accept technical limitations targeted to address the above problems, but keep the aspects that make the device useful in most mobile applications. There are also limitations intended to help stability and ease maintenance.
I use and enjoy Windows computers every day, but also appreciate my iPad for it's strengths.
PEOPLE :
Windows 8 will come for both ARM and X86 processors.
ARM won't run X86 code, X86 will run X86 code (for now, I wouldn't be surprised to see some kind of wrapper someday).
Its just that simple! There's no "trying to recreate the ipad" here.
No need to FUD the whole thing by saying "OMG it won't run old code at all!". What kind of person would believe that MS is just abandoning Intel processor entirely?
"So all this time Microsoft has just been making a touch tablet!" another user complained. "We all thought that they were going to make a tablet that would run legacy desktop apps. The wait is over. Go out and get an iPad."
"We all thought that they were going to make a tablet that would run legacy desktop apps."
THERE HAS BEEN WINDOWS TABLETS FOR ALMOST 15 YEARS!! WAKE UP PEOPLE!!
Wow.. damn.. there is just so much idiocy on the internet these days.
no there never were any windows tablets out in public!

LOL!! You have just rendered all your arguments invalid. Just because YOU have never seen one doesn't mean it doesn't exists.

.. and I could go on, there has been many Windows tablet makers for the past 15 years.
"if there were any show me the old adds, so i can see the prices :)"
Yeah that's right, you can't afford most of them.

Don't spend so much time and energy trying to reason fanboys like lala. For them, the world begins and ends with Apple. They won't open the door even if you show them the way.
yeah, cry me a river but none of that stuff is 15 years old ...
and dont dare to link to some ibm research projekt that never saw the light of day
There's no "trying to recreate the ipad" here.
I do have to disagree with this. Everyone's trying to recreate the iPad.
@lala http://static.progressivemediagroup.com/uploads/imagelibrary/ipad-hp-fail.jpg
You are right, this one is only 8 years old... duh...
So, you are still in denial that tablets existed before the ipad eh?
Here : http://www.axiotron.com/index.php?id=modbook
These guys have been making OSX tablets for longer than Apple themselves.
u need a pen for that

Sure, there have been years of 'tablets', but all of these have either been relatively expensive, lacking any power, mega battery size to keep the thing going, or a combination of any of the previous- and like lala quite rightly points out, mouse driven, which the iPad most certainly isn't.
We're talking 'slates' really. Not 'tablets' (you cuss Lala, anon, but I think lala does know about other 'tablets'! :) ). The 'tablet' as it stands, is pretty much on the scrapheap. I do hope Microsoft & Windows 8 pull it off, because as the links above currently prove, the iPad has no competition.
Running a Mac Mini here with both OSX and Windows XP in Fusion at the same time. Windows 7 is in the living room, and is a far better OS imo than XP. But you know, a tool is a tool. Don't ever let that get in your way. :D
@lala
"u need a pen for that"
No you don't, those models works with both pen and touch. Don't you know that?
if the software u use isnt made for a touchinterface,
u have to click the little buttons with an artificial limb
talk about intuitive & fun :/
have a look @ sunvox, u'll see what im talking about
@Tom
Yes its true, Apple is king of the low cost consumer tablets, there's no denying that.
But I don't see all those other companies selling Windows tablets going out of business just because the iPad has the largest penetration in the consumer market.
I don't see Panasonic halting their production of their Thoughbook tablets because of the ipad. Neither I see Motion Computing going out of business because of the ipad (MC are the largest providers of tablets to doctors and hospitals). Heck, even ExoPC are still doing great. All these companies are not going out of business just because of the ipad. There's a reason for that.
There's a huge market for tablet computing that the iPad can't penetrate, mostly because of how Apple restricts certains aspects of its OS and its hardware. For example there are people who needs writing recognition and Apple is nowhere to be seen there. There are people who wants to run Protools on a tablet, and its possible with a Windows tablet, not with an ipad.
There's a lot of denial here about that.
@lala
"talk about intuitive & fun :/"
You are funny, because I find Fruityloops very intuitive and fun on my Windows tablet. Is there a reason why you are trying to convince me that its not true?
no, u can have fun with whatever,
its just not my cup of tea :)
wait till we have ipads with a6,
we might see a new version of logic ...

"its just not my cup of tea :)"
I all about having different flavors of tea.
"wait till we have ipads with a6,
we might see a new version of logic"
Does that mean you will have to buy another ipad again?
I personnally prefer a full studio experience with routing and plugins.
"for handwritting pen lovers:"
Yeah its not bad, but it doesn't integrate with the OS. Its just an app, on its own island.
Enjoy your zunePad! I am sure it will take over the tablet market, just like every mp3 player is now a Zune.
"Does that mean you will have to buy another ipad again?"
i dont know how long u r into computers,but everybody knows every two years u need to buy a new one, if u want to use state of the art software ...
btw. brown is the new black, lol
There sure is a lot of ranting going on in this thread. Simmer down.
Listen, Windows 8 is an exciting OS. It's the first real competition to iOS. Android has had its chance, and so far it's blown it. Sure, it has impressive market share, but the software itself is well below iOS in quality.
If MS can pull this off and make a well done mobile OS, then that's good, because it gives people another choice and will help fuel Apple to keep improving iOS.
Windows 8 isn't even slated to be released for a whole more year. Give it time and let's see how the situation improves over that time.
aaaargh, that means i have to read rants for one more year how windows 8 will kick trolls fairy a##
@lala
"i dont know how long u r into computers,but everybody knows every two years u need to buy a new one"
When you buy a good computer, you can upgrade it, you don't need to buy a complete new one every two years you Apple noob.
"aaaargh, that means i have to read rants for one more year how windows 8 will kick trolls fairy a##"
Well of course, because in the end Windows8 will have a bigger marketshare than IOS, just like Windows has a bigger marketshare than OSX. Better get used to it you cute little fanboy.
So,.. Windows8 will kick your little troll fairy a##? I have a feeling you have no idea what you have wrote there, lol! I think I will truly enjoy reading your little idiotic rants in the next year. :D
Love.
"btw. brown is the new black, lol"
Isn't that funny how 10 years of "I'm a Mac, and I'm a PC" hasn't got Apple more than 7% of the computers marketshare? Actually they have less marketshare than before.
John Hodgman is the new black.
