Airmino - A Motion Theremin Synthesizer for iPhone arrives

Airmino is a powerful motion theremin synthesizer: create music by simply moving your hand through the air!

You can choose from 5 audio waveforms, 2 sound effects (tremolo and a realistic ring modulator), and any musical key in one of 9 different scales. You can control the singing quality of the theremin by setting the smoothness of the glissando (changes between notes) or the strength of the vibrato (frequency modulation around the current note). You can even turn off the musical tuning system entirely to make fun sci-fi sounds like the classic theremin sound-tracks of 1950's outer-space movies.

To play music with Airmino, you must securely hold your iPhone or iPod touch in your hand. To control the pitch of the tone, you smoothly sweep your hand (carrying the device) up or down through the air. Airmino uses sophisticated motion-tracking algorithms to immediately and accurately translate your movements into changes in pitch or note, which are displayed at the top of the screen.

In addition to up-and-down movements for pitch, Airmino translates side-to-side motion into a natural singing vibrato and converts the rotation angle of the device into audio volume. If you have selected a sound effect from the effects menu, then you can control the effect frequency by sliding your thumb on the displayed touchpad.

Airmino is a virtual theremin that allows you to create a world of music with simple, intuitive motions of your hand!

Features:
  • All new 32-bit, low-latency audio engine
  • Adaptive path-integration algorithms for motion tracking
  • Fast, versatile theremin model for tone control
  • Audio waveforms:
    • Sine, Squared sine, Sawtooth, Triangle, and Square wave
  • Sound effects:
    • Ring modulator, based on a realistic model of the analog diode circuit
    • Tremolo, based on amplitude modulation
  • Musical tuning system:
    • Any key, 9 different musical scales
    • Glissando: control the smoothness between note changes
    • Portamento: control whether intermediary notes are played
    • Vibrato: control the singing tone using side-to-side motion
  • Musical scales:
    • Chromatic, Major, Pentatonic Major, Double Harmonic Major,
    • Natural Minor, Pentatonic Minor, Double Harmonic Minor
    • Blues, Raga Vutari

The app is priced at $2.99.

New iPad app coming from the maker of Audio Mastering Studio

You might remember I posted some pictures a little while ago of old style reel to reel and cassette multitrack hardware. Well this is the app that's coming, and I'm really excited about it!

Details? Yep, here.

About the audiobus routes of the day

I got this comment about my Audiobus routes of the day and I thought I should answer some of the points:
  1. I don't have a financial interest in Audiobus.
  2. Audiobus route of the day isn't a gimmick, it's just a bit of fun
  3. I will consider uploading something to SoundCloud from occasional routes, but only occasionally as a lot of times I just play and don't record anything.
Hope that's ok.

Anaphobia Destro 1.1

Useful stuff from Michael Tyson about how to save your apps

I was reminded of this as Orphion has now been crippled by Apple. So take a few minutes to read this post and make sure you get your apps backed up.

Anaphobia Mini 1.1 submitted

Here's what's coming:
  • Audiobus support
  • Updated UI
  • Retina 4″ support
  • Selectable audio buffer size (64, 128, 256, 512 and 1024 samples)
  • Various improvements

Don't update Orphion

The crippled version is finally with us, so whatever you do, don't update your version. Just let it sit there doing nothing. Perhaps Apple will see the error of their ways at some point and relent and let us do interesting things with gestures, aside from the kind of gestures you may wish to make in their general direction at the moment.

Developer of the week is: Audiobus !

As you all know what it does (I expect) there's no need to explain why, but I though it was worth saying. So Audiobus is my developer of the week this week as they've changed the way we do things in a big way and I hope that in the coming weeks and months we see Audiobus develop and bring us new ways to connect our apps and do even more interesting and extreme things!

Thanks Audiobus.

Scotch Box Synthesizer - Synth effects

Erik Bell says ...

"Here are the "special effects" on my Scotch Box Synthesizer.
Demonstrated first is the capacitor; where one button produces sounds from it draining and the other from it charging. Then is the "Special effects Generator" which produces a rhythmic effect. Then the "Stepped Tone Generator" or "Atari Punk Console" which creates arpeggios from the input tone. Give it a high note and you'll get lots of results. Give it a low note and you'll just get one or two. Last up is a riff based on a combination of the capacitor and "Atari Punk Console." The riff is a happy accident I created late one night; and I hope many more happy accidents are waiting.
Every circuit on this contraption is based on designs by Forest Mims III, who writes books for beginning electronic enthusiasts. Check out his Wikipedia entry, you'll be amazed."

Google have announced their new Nexus 7 which is coming soon, but what could it mean for anyone making music on Android? Not a huge amount from what I can read about it. Yes, it's got a faster processor, CPU is 1.8x and I think I read GPU is at 4x, which is impressive. But will the Android OS be able to deliver low latency any time soon?

Let's face it, for the most part iOS is the go to platform for mobile music. Android is getting better, but it's still a long way behind in many ways. But what if that changed? What if some new hardware or software came along for a mobile platform other than iOS?

What is it that would make you decide to change over?

Apple bringing new products this Autumn and into 2014 ... So?

From their earnings call yeterday Apple have said that they have new products on the way to us for later this year and into 2014. All great, but what? And, more importantly, what will make the biggest difference for mobile musicians?

Whilst speed is always good I really want to see more innovation from them. Yes, iOS7 is nice and I'm sure there'll be things in there which will help (inter-app audio?), but I don't want to buy my next iPad just for the speed bump. I want more. What that is, well I don't know as yet.

What would you like to see, and what do you think will make the biggest difference for mobile music?

Another plug for this event ...

From the creator of the Molecule synth comes the Battery Powered Orchestra Workshop! In Portland on the 10th of August.

BPOW (Battery Powered Orchestra Workshop) is a 2-day interactive festival dedicated to the art of salvaged sound and DIY electronics. Encompassing two days of workshops, performances and culminating in a DIY public jam session, BPOW!!! wants to show Portland that even the simplest circuit configurations can bring forth unprecedented levels of ROCK.

Palm Sounds flickr group

I've posted about this before recently as I've been wondering about this group. Should I revive it? Would anyone like to be involved too? I think that now that flickr have beefed up their account limits it'd be a lot easier.

So, if you'd like to put your mobile music pictures in the group, click here and I'll add you.

The App Store turned 5 so here's 5 things I'd like them to do ...

I know it was a little while ago, but here are a few simple things that I think would make the app store a bit easier to use ...
  1. Upgrade pricing - I don't think it should be beyond the abilities of Apple to introduce this. I know it would almost certainly add complexity and in some cases it wouldn't be popular with users, but it could help developers to continue to support apps with new features rather than the current process of having to issue a whole new version on a big upgrade.
  2. Make wish lists accessible on the iPhone and iPad. I love my wish list on iTunes but it would be so much better if I could see it and add to it on my iPhone.
  3. More categories. Just having music is not enough. I'd like to see it split down into more categories and perhaps have one just for cat pianos and similar apps, so I can avoid those. At the very least we should get a music production category.
  4. More price points and simpler pricing.
  5. Allow users to go back to a previous version. I think it would be much easier if we could downgrade apps on our devices. Not just when things go wrong, but for use with older devices too. Of course this would be especially useful when iOS7 brings auto updates.
Anything I've missed or that you'd like to see?

For a variety of reasons I was feeling a bit retro, so I thought I'd show some love for Griff for the ancient Windows Mobile.

The business of apps: The History of App Pricing, And Why Most Apps Are Free

An interesting piece from the flurry blog about app pricing. Certainly of use to developers, but also might be of interest to users.

Really getting back into Reactable

Do you ever get the situation where even though an app is really good and worth using you just don't use it for no good reason at all?

Well I sort of had that with Reactable Mobile for a while now. Using it again with Audiobus has reminded me just how much you can do with it and how interesting an app it is.

It does make me think about other apps that I'm just not using to their capacity, or have ended up overlooking. So perhaps I need to have a hunt around?

Converting Video to Audio and Back Again--A Pixivisor Demo

Harmonizer from binaura (video)

Althought this isn't mobile it is from binaura who makes some very nice Android apps.

Here's the description:

Harmonizer is a musical instrument for studying diatonic scales through harmonic motions. Diatonic scales are serving as the basis for a wide range of music including folk songs, jazz, classical music. This instrument introduces modal scales, pentatonic and a few of the different minor / major structures. Harmonic motion is based on simple trigonometric pendulums (sinus, cosines, etc) that describes really organic motions. The goal of Harmonizer is to collide these two concepts and see what happens.

Try it yourself:

effectus - 4 stereo effects for audulus

Sunsine Audio is pleased to announce Effectus - 4 Stereo Effects for Audulus.
Effectus contains 4 stereo effects ready for standalone or Audiobus use.

Shifter -

Shifter contains a pitch shift section as well as a ring mod section. Both can be used independently or mixed together as well as mixed with the original signal. This is the free demo instrument.

Binary (Chop) and Binary (RIng) -

Binary is an amplitude modulator or gate device, and comes in two flavors. Binary (Chop) allows exploration of slower speed stereo gating effects while Binary (Ring) brings the amplitude modulation into the audio range, producing ring modulation effects with a different tone than the "traditional" ring modulation in Shifter produces.

Mothra -

Mothra is a sequenced and filtered reverb. Each input is individually fed through a network of distortion devices, simple low pass filters, and reverbs which are then delivered to a 16 step sequencer providing strange stereo and resonant spaces which can be "stepped" through.

Time Gap -

Time Gap is a filtered stereo delay with cross feed between the left and right channels. A simple high pass filter is followed by three delay units with two resonant low pass filters placed between them, delays can be cross fed at two points in the signal chain.
