Hopes for Tweakybeat

Following an exchange of tweets it looks like we might be getting an update to TweakyBeat! Here's my wishlist for it:

- AudioCopy
- Export as wav
- Save sound settings

I could go on, but I thought I'd keep my wishlist short for once. I know that tweakybeat is free, but I'd be happy to pay for an update with those things in it.

Dell to release more Android Tablets

Brighthand reports that Dell have plans to release further tablet devices after their Mini 5 comes out in order to compete with the iPad.

I'm hoping that the Dell Mini 5 will be significantly cheaper than the iPad, and the specs for it look really good.

Band in a hand update

Band in a Hand has had an update. Here's what's new:
  1. Support for iPod touch. Band In A Hand now works on both 1st and 2nd Generation iPod touch, as well as all iPhone generations. As there is no support for microphone on the 1st Generation iPod touch, you will not be able to record vocals on it, but all instrumental capabilities are fully functional. On the 2nd Generation iPod touch Band In A Hand is full featured.
  2. Reduced latency on audio recordings
Also, thanks for the anonymous commenter who pointed out that this is a lot like band in a box.

Nintendo DSi XL

Brighthand reports on the DSi XL, which is an interesting device. I have to admit that I am a bit tempted by it. I like the DS as a platform, and I love my DS-10. I'd like to get the DS-10+ but there's no point on an existing DS, so maybe a DSi XL could be the answer especially as in the UK Amazon have it listed for £149!

Playing with Touch DJ 2

As ever I found time on the train to play with this app and get into it after not using it for quite a while. I only used the bundled content, but I thought that the beat syncing was very good, so I'm looking forward to putting some of my own tracks in there soon and see how it deals with that. Maybe I'll get some time over the weekend.

An update from Sonoma?

I got this comment on the Audio Sharing post:
Hayden from Sonoma here. Just wanted to add that Recorder from Retronyms now supports AudioCopy as well. Also, we are currently working on an update for our AudioCopy/Paste SDK. I won't say what it does, but it should make things a lot easier for everybody;-)

I've no idea what this means, but hopefully something good for all of us.

Questions on meeting up

I've posted a couple of times to explore the possibility of getting a Palm Sound meet up organised, and so far I have some interest but not loads, so what I'm going to do is put up a poll on rough areas to meet up in the UK, and also what kind of content people might want.

The poll will allow you tick multiple boxes for location, but please only tick more than one location box if you are prepared to travel to that location.

I'm also keen to know if weekends or weekdays are better, and again, only tick both if you are happy to do either.

For the content options these are performance, talks, other. If you tick other, please let me know what 'other' you have in mind.

Open Music Media

I went along to Open Music Media last night to hear Michael Breidenbruecker from RJDJ talk about how they started, where they're going and the whole concept behind what they're up to.

It provoked a very interesting debate around what stimulates people to like music and interact with it and people had very different views about how reactive music could be used and get consumers more interested in it. What was really interesting from my point of view was the discussion around how reactive music can work in the context of the current music business, and what space it can carve out.

It was also a great chance for me to talk to the RJDJ team about what they're up to.

I've posted stuff about their RJC1000 software before and it seems like the team are making some really interesting improvements to it in coming releases. There's a lot to look forward to with RJC1000 which is great as I'm hoping to get at least 1 scene out from Palm Sounds in the next month.

I think we can expect to see more and more innovation coming from RJDJ in 2010, and whilst this is no surprise as they've been innovative from day 1, it is going to be good news for artists and composers looking for a more interactive platform to engage with listeners

Why no updates for Tweakybeat?

Tweakybeat is a great little drum app that has great sounds. Sadly it hasn't been updated at all. It is one of those apps that has so much potential. It is fun in it's current state, but to make it really good I'd love to see it get support for audiocopy so I could use it in FourTrack and Looptastic. I'd be happy to pay for it.

RJDJ Love Contest

A new contest from RJDJ:
We really wanted to see what you can do with the new scene Love by AIR, so we’ve decided to run a little contest for the best Love recording. Get the Love by AIR application, use it to communicate to the world who you love, and submit it to the contest by sharing it and following the instructions after the upload. There are some sweet AIR related prices each week, and the overall winner takes home an iPod Touch. (that you can get engraved with something wonderful and give to someone you appreciate, or keep it yourself of course.)

DopplerPad - Skamp

Skamp by retronyms

Nice track made in DopplerPad, but then it is a great app. One thing I would like to see would be some kind of community sharing of instruments inside the app itself. That'd be brilliant. Also, maybe the ability to make kits in the same way as you can make synths and effects?

More ThumbJam goodies

I just checked out the ThumbJam site and noticed this in the news sectsion:

The next version of ThumbJam will feature two signature instruments from Dream Theater's keyboard wizard Jordan Rudess!

It will also have several new features including audio copy and paste between applications using both Sonoma's AudioCopy/Paste and Intua's copy/paste conventions.

A new performance sidebar allows quick octave/key changes as well a locking sustain button.

You'll be able to build your own instruments in the app using both recorded and imported samples (via WiFi or audio paste from another app).

I don't think I'd realised that the next version would allow you to make instruments from audio pasted into this app. That's going to be really interesting to play with!

I know it is not mobile music related, but I just love these.

Audio Sharing on the iPhone

I've been meaning to write this for a while now, but everyday the situation gets more complex / interesting. So, here's my attempt at getting the whole picture on audio sharing on the iPhone OS.

ioLibrary

So, sadly we have said goodbye to ioLibrary from Amidio, and I think most of the apps that supported it have now been updated to remove it. The only one I can think of that hasn't been updated is iSequence which is a great app. Also, Equalizer still supports ioLibrary. Hopefully Apple have enough on their plate with getting rid of lots of other apps to worry about these two.

Of course, it isn't clear what Amidio will do next. Amidio haven't said which standard they might support for their own apps in the future, or if they might bring something completely new to the party!

Sonoma Wire Works AudioCopy / Paste

Sonoma Wire Works have had a lot of developers take up their audiocopy / paste standard. The apps that have this functionality are:

DopplerPad
FourTrack
Reverb
ThumbJam

I think there was also talk of Bleep!Box going down this route, but no further news has come out. I'm not sure of any others planning the Sonoma way, although Argon developer IceGearMusic has said they are thinking of it. Amidio have now said that they may go down the Sonoma route too with Noise IO Pro, which is excellent news.

Intua's Pasteboard

Next we have Intua's new pasteboard standard which only got introduced as a direct result of ioLibrary being removed at Apple's request. Apps that are supporting Intua's standard:

Beatmaker
BassLine
Drum Track8

Apps that are planning to support Intua:

NLog, MultiTrack, Noise IO Pro, and possibly InstantBeat

There could be more. If you know of them, or if you're working on an app that implements either of these standards please get in touch.

It would of course be nice to have a single standard for audio sharing, but I doubt that we will get anything like that for a while. There was talk of some form of common directory being in iPhone OS 3.2 when the iPad comes out, but the noise around that has died down.

Another possible solution would be for a single paste app (like PasteBot for example) to have the ability to hold audio from an app and then paste it out. That would be great too.

There are also a lot of apps out there which haven't declared any intentions. Apps like RecTools08, Sunvox, Xewton, iShred, Jasuto, PatternMusic, and a host more I'm sure.

So this post is really just the start of where we are with audio sharing. I'm sure that over the next few weeks things will change a lot and more apps will adopt either or both of the standards.

An OS change could alter the situation completely, and who knows how the iPad will change things. It just gets more interesting every day!

UPDATE 24/2/10-2:17pm - Correction MultiTrack will support Intua not Sonoma.
UPDATE 24/2/10-11:48pm - Correction to apps supporting Intua.
UPDATE 10/3/10: Added Noise IO Pro from Amidio.

Audioview is the bridge

Audioview 1.1 will be the bridge between audio copy and intua's pasteboard. Very useful indeed. Version 1.1 is in review with Apple now.

Fun with RJDJ

Messing with RJDJ sitting in a coffee shop and remembered how much fun it is to make recordings with this in noisy places. I should do it more often, and I should really get on with making some scenes in Pd.

In fact, I'm going to get my head into RJC1000 later on. I'll tell you how it goes.
