Playing with the Donut

I held back from writing anything about the Strange Agency's new app Donut until I'd had a reasonable time to actually play with it. A lot of the pieces I'd read started with the writer only being able to get clicks out of the app and not much else.

I'd like to tell you my experience was very different, but it wasn't. That's not to say that I haven't enjoyed using this app so far. I have, a lot in fact. It's been excellent to play with, but I keep feeling like I'm just scratching the surface so far of what it can do, so I'm going to have to spend a lot more time with it I'm sure.

The best way I was able to "figure" Donut out was to turn the voices level to max and switch to the "live" mode. Once enough ambient sound gets recorded into the app(or just spend a couple minutes reading a paragraph into your mic) you will eventually get full sentences recorded into Donut.

Remember that the settings you record at are going to effect the way your outcome is. Like if you record on a regular tape machine in 4x when you set the tape to 0x the speed will actually be -4.

I found setting the x/y to standard BPM levels for speech really helps the base recording. Either 0/120 or visa versa. If your numbers are off you are essentially listening to what ever you record at light speed, hence the clicks. One little word recorded into the machine going 400 mph will sound like clicks. That's why I say it is best to "live" collect as much audio into the Donut as possible until you can figure out what the setting will do to the audio.

It really took me about an hour just to be able to record and playback a "normal" sentence.

Keep working, use these tips, and you should find the best settings to get strange with.

PS- the xy speed control( for forward and reverse )and it is SUPER sensitive so it can push the bounds of human ability to decipher sounds quickly. Best to set it and forget it until you are actually able to hear 'true playback' then you can get into the "DJ scratching" :). Also the more "tracks" you record to at first the easier it is for playback to pick up the sounds. So set the track count slider pretty high so it records the same thing to multiple tracks. That way when the play head passes over and around(and around) it has a better chance of picking up full "clips" instead of just passing over one word every revolution.

I have myself only been down one layer of this app. I still have WAAY more to figure out. I still have trouble when it comes to multiple tracks.

These are just my basic experiences with the app.

I feel there is really no right or wrong way to use an app like this SP if you yourself was to come up with a different or even better method to use this app, then great.

This was just one example of how I was able to have fun with the app and avoid "the hour of click".

Perhaps I will barrow a camera that will produce good video and do a quick settings tutorial to show how I am using Donut to mangle some audio.

Remember that your not going to get much more then tape sounds so if your expecting to get granular type synthesis out of Donut you might be in the wrong app.

From what I remember of the app description,it is a multitrack recorder. You can set some crazy speed effects and reverse and forward, even random, the overruns could make for some unique audio too,but I think of it as more of a tape recorder,so what ever you think you could do with a tape recorder you should he able to do with this app......and then some.

It is very difficult to get straight recording/playback. I don't think of it like voice memo recorder or multitrack DAW. I think of it like a wired glitch playback device vsti style.

Remember I could be wrong in all this. This is just my take. So if you have your own experience feel free to chime in.

Sorry for taking a full page up. I just think this app disappointed me at first then I was able to make something of it and it settled in.
