Talking to Tim Cole from Intermorphic

I was lucky to catch up with Tim from Intermorphic recently and spend a couple of hours chatting about the mobile music world and what he's doing at Intermorphic.

Tim and Pete from Intermorphic have been in the mobile music business for a long time. Way before iOS became the dominant operating system for mobile music making. Mixtikl, and miniMIXA before it were on Windows Mobile a long time before the iPhone first appeared, and it is important to remember the software has it's roots in Koan Pro. Tim and Pete worked on Koan with Mr Eno, and as a result, Mixtikl has a lot of power under the hood, a lot of which they haven't unleashed as yet, so that was one of the main things I talked to Tim about.

I've mentioned the next version of Mixtikl before but when I met up with Tim I got a chance to play with some of the new features and it is a big step forward. I don't want to spoil the surprise so I won't say much more except that I'm really looking forward to getting to use the new version of Mixtikl, and it is going to be a lot more integrated into my workflow very soon too.

More on Mixtikl coming very soon!

Tim,

I've been a supporter for sometime now- I really hope you release the next version as a free update for current iphone.ipod users.

I really enjoy Mixtikl, and praise the support you guys offer- especially the ability to download a Windows/Mac version to fully experience it before taking the plunge.

ACP Support is so important and one of the things most new pro audio consumers look for before buying apps.

I hope everything continues to go well with the development- it's a great mobile tool.

An idea if possible, is a generative glitch instrument- similar to blueGlitch, even if the instrument utilized only two samples- such as a high hat pattern, or a synth melody - the glitch sounds you can get from those two sounds are unreal.

Anyway- love ya brother- keep on keepin on

@anonymous,

I think I saw that the (supposedly in review by Apple) next release will be a free update. As for ACP, it is already there the most important way: you can take what you produce in Mixtikl to the rest of the music making app world.

@Tim and Palmsounds,

I just can't wait, as the submission was made at about the same time as the Nanostudio one if I'm correct, I keep on looking at the app store tons of times a day... Thanks for the news and kudos for this extraordinary app!

re power under the hood - I've said it before, but mixtikl would be one of the most powerful sound engine's on iOS if they allowed the user direct control over it.

I can understand why they choose to specialize in generative stuff so as not to go head to head with nanostudio/beatmaker/other DAWs, but as a power-user I wish I could take advantage of the stuff going on under the hood.

Still, kudos to the developer for sticking with the app and updates. They got a lot of criticism in the early releases, and it's good to see a developer that's been able to weather the storm and get some much-deserved recognition on the other end...

Looking forward to future the future of mixtikl!

I don't think that Tim and Pete Cole are thinking about Nanostudio/Beatmaker or other DAW when they do their stuff as they are part of the best generative music software adventures since the nineties...

Hi all, many thanks for your kind comments!

@anonymous 1 - Yes, the Mixtikl 3.0 release is a free update for Mixtikl 2.x users. When it goes live on the App Store it will be a free update. Note that your current saved mix files will be moved to the User Content folder making them easier to sync over iTunes App File Sharing.

@ Mat - thank you very much! We hope it is going to be within a day or so now....

@ Anonymous 2 - Yes, with Mixtikl 3.0 you WILL at last be able to control/totally customise/build modular synth sounds/networks and FX/networks inline and live. Oh, and Noatikl scale and harmony rules, too. Massive job for us to hook that all up, but it is done, and the Network Editor is much easier to use, too. :). We hope to go ever further in 3.1, which we are working on now :). Yes, that will be a free update, too, and it will mean even more power. However, we expect all the capabilities we have shoe-horned into V3.0 will keep people busy experimenting and tweeting (please!) for some long while, but we won't be resting :) :) :).

We hope everyone enjoys it, and we thank you again for the kind comments - they REALLY do help us keep pushing on through the hard times (yes, there are plenty of those with a project like this!).

NB: @ashley/palm-sounds - especial big up from us to the man. Ashley brings real interest, passion and energy to the mobile music making community and is a massive asset to all of us who are interested in this area. Keep it going Ashley!!!

@tim - since you have the engine, have you thought about collaborating with artists to make interactive generative apps ala bloom to generate revenue from the casual user audience?

From the standpoint of an advanced user, this wouldn't benefit me (I'd much rather see these advanced features in mixtikl rolled out), but from the standpoint of leveraging your existing technology to generating additional revenue, it may be good for you guys.

@anonymous - yes, that is a nice idea, but it means we would then have to take our foot off the gas wrt extending the tool for everyone, as there is finite development resource!

I think the best approach for us is to continue doing all we can to let users/artists make the best sounding portable, custom & unique generative music possible, and then to look at creating a simple generic player (or two!) for pure entertainment that can play the content made by users/artists. We will see!
