Chord Detector for iPhone

This app caught my eye as it looks like it might be a very useful app to have around even though not an actual music making app. Here are the details:

Chord Detector is aimed at musicians of any ability to help you learn to play the tracks on your iPod music library by automatically detecting their chords.

Just select one of your iPod library tracks(†) from within the Chord Detector app and within minutes you will be presented with a view of the detected chords contained within that track. The chord detection process used within Chord Detector is highly configurable enabling you to achieve the most accurate results.

The following chord detection configurations can be made:-
  • Algorithm - select between 3 chord detection algorithms.
  • Beat Detection - enable beat detection to reduce the number of chord changes.
  • Key Detection - enable to use only detected chords appropriate for the songs key.
  • Optimise - reduce the number of chord changes by removing subtle changes.
You have the option to view the detected chords in two different forms, scrolling and tabular. In both of these views you are able to play the track and the chords will move or be highlighted as the song is playing.

The following controls are available on the chord view screens:-
  • Play/Pause - play or pause the track.
  • Rewind 30s - rewind the track by 30 seconds.
  • Forward 30s - forward the track by 30 seconds.
  • Tempo Adj. - slow down the track without affecting the pitch by a variable amount down to 1/4 of its original speed.
The Chord Detector app also supports the use of a capo. Just select the fret that your capo is clipped to and the app will adjust the detected chords to suit.

† The following audio file formats are supported, MP3, M4A, WAV and AIFF.

The app is priced at $2.99 at launch.

This would be great, if it works.. The only reviews I see just says it's crashing though. anyone got it to work?

It's working fine for me. Nice interface and pretty accurate - even on a jazz standard.

The developers website has posted that they put in a fix for the crashing problem yesterday. I decided to wait until Apple reviews and approves the fix before I buy. Right now you can only use songs with over 3 word titles or it will crash.

Actually, the crasher is having tune titles of three characters or less in your library, a rather odd bug!

Looks good but I use meCanto as my music player not the iPod so I guess I'll stick TomChord.
