Music Performance using Soundcamp Looper and Gear S2 (video)

Ok, I'm starting to really want to get my hands on this stuff.

Almost makes me want to get these now!

Video description:

"Soundcamp Looper is a companion app that is exclusive to Soundcamp, Samsung's powerful music creating application.

With Soundcamp Looper, you can control sound effects without touching your device.

The Soundcamp Looper controller uses hand gestures to control the XY parameters so you can add effects to your music performances by simply moving your Galaxy Gear watch.

Soundcamp Looper also provides three modes for different watch positions: Left wrist, Right wrist and Hand-held.

Simply swipe up from the bottom of the screen to see the options."

3D Touch is going to be a big deal I think

So the new iPhone 6s and 6s+ have 3D Touch. It looked like an interesting feature when Apple brought it to the MacBook Pro, and now on mobile it looks like being even more important. But why?

I've been watching what non-music apps have been doing with 3D touch, and I have to say it's pretty impressive. It seems to have created a whole new control dimension to the device.

But for music apps it's going to do a lot more than that. If you look at some of the posts earlier today you can see that already there's a bunch of new functionality that's going to rely on 3D touch. I think that we're going to see a great deal more of this, and we're going to see a lot of truly interesting implementations of 3D touch coming in the next few weeks. In my opinion it will be the control dimension that gestural should have been, but in many ways wasn't.
  1. So if you're a developer, what are you thinking about in terms of 3D touch and how it'll work for your app?
  2. If you're a mobile musician, what are you thinking about in terms of how you'd like to see 3D touch in your favourite apps?
I don't think that this is going to go away. It'll end up being something that we just take for granted. That's what I think anyway.

Why the Theremini is so important ...

I'm sure you've seen Moog's new Theremini which is due to start shipping shortly. It's a lovely machine, very compact with great features including CV output and MIDI IO through a USB mini jack. But what's really important is that it's built on Moog's Animoog engine, and for me that's really significant.

No, it's really really significant. I mean, how many physical instruments can you name that have their sound engine derived from an app? Not many I'm guessing. This is a point in music technology where things start to get really interesting. Where apps become embedded in hardware. So I applaud Moog for developing this instrument. Personally I'm really looking forward to using it in workshops and live as well. Having the Animoog engine inside guarantees fantastic sound and amazing synthesis.

Well done Moog, this is the beginning of something really important.

It's a bit of a poor man's leap motion, although my recent experience with a leap motion hasn't been wonderful to be honest. However, it is interesting.

First Impressions: iRing from IK Multimedia

I was lucky enough to get the a sample pack of IK’s new iRing controller last week and found time to give them a quick play as well. My initial reaction to the hardware is that these are simple lightweight and yet quite robust and sturdy. The controllers are very easy to hold and once you’ve got them in your hand they don’t fall out easily.

I started by trying to use the iRings without configuring them, and of course, they don’t work. You need to register these using the QR code that comes in pack. Once you’ve done that they work straight off with no problems at all.

Once you’ve got the whole thing working it’s a lot of fun to play with. I started off by using the iRing Music Maker app (iTunes link). The app gives you a view on how the controllers work and how they can be used, but I think the real benefit to a lot of mobile musicians will be using IK’s other iRing enabled app, the iRing FX app. In the music maker app you can assign different parameters to each controller iRing. This is pretty easy to do actually and it’s very responsive once set up.

I used one to control the overall filter on the mix and the other to change the patterns coming in and out. I found that even with this simple set up it was great to just play and bring stuff in and out. I think I could probably spend a lot of time just messing about with a mix and controlling different parameters in it.

So, next I need to spend some time with the FX controller app and see where that takes me. I think that IK’s newest addition to their mobile hardware line up is going to be well worth the €19.99 they’re charging for it, especially if other developers take on the iRing SDK which is available here.

Is it just me who can see the musical applications of this hardware?

We make Sensus, the world's first app enhancing case — adding touch interface to the sides and entire back of your mobile device through patent-pending variable pressure technology."

I can see immense uses for this as an expressive musical interface that could work with loads of apps. Is it just me?

IK's iRing press release ...

First presented at CES 2014, iRing is an affordable, wearable technology system that gives users a new level of gestural control over their favourite music apps, in real-time, using hand positioning for unprecedented music expression.

The iRing system consists of two double-sided “rings” to wear comfortably on the fingers along with a series of apps that are able to detect the iRings’ accurate positions in space using the device’s camera. Through the recognition of the dot patterns printed on the rings, the device’s camera picks up the movement and translates it into MIDI information. Users can then interact with music apps by simply moving their hands in front of their device through the precise reading of the ring position, which is converted into music commands or MIDI control messages to operate various app parameters without touching the device.

iRing includes two identical double-sided ring controllers plus two free apps for various music applications designed for everyone from music lovers to knowledgeable DJs and musicians: iRing Music Maker and iRing FX/Controller.

iRing Music Maker is a free app that gives music lovers and DJs a fun new way to create music and grooves using hand gestures, no matter what their skill level. iRing Music Maker utilises music “loops” that always sound good together and can be remixed in virtually limitless combinations by simply waving the hands with the iRing controllers in front of the device’s camera. Users can change beats, control rhythmic elements, play synth parts and control effects providing hours and hours of quality musical entertainment. Plus, iRing Music Maker also includes lead and bass synths with respective pattern players that can be independently operated for hours of error-free musical improvisation. Creating music has never been so much fun!

iRing FX/Controller is the app for skilled musicians and DJs that is both a real-time audio effects processor and a MIDI controller with fully assignable parameters. It can be used as a touch-less outboard audio effects processor, or can be fully configured to send multiple simultaneous MIDI parameters; such as control changes, notes or any other MIDI messages.

As an effects processor, iRing FX/Controller uses the analogue or digital input of the device for processing external audio sources. FX/Controller can also be used with Audiobus and Inter-App Audio compatible apps to process the audio stream from music apps running on the device to add stunning and brilliant audio effects. The iRings can control up to six effects parameters at a time. iRing FX/Controller operates two simultaneous effects, selectable from up to 16 powerful and creative effects, including: Delay, Stutter, Phazer, Flanger, Compression, Fuzzy, Reverb, AutoWah, Crush, Twist Up & Down, Brake, Spin and Tail.

As a MIDI controller, iRing FX/Controller can transmit MIDI messages to other Virtual MIDI compatible apps running on the device or to external devices using compatible MIDI interfaces (like IK’s iRig MIDI). iRing FX/Controller can send out the complete set of MIDI messages (control change, notes, program change, pitch wheel, aftertouch, MIDI system real-time, and MMC, MIDI Machine Control) with up to 3 assignable parameters corresponding to the X, Y and Z axis positions for each of the 2 detectable rings for a new level of touch-less control. Additionally, MIDI messages can also be sent to a computer application via Wi-Fi (using MIDI network). Users can configure the app to control effects, filters, notes, patches and more for creative and dynamic “never before seen” performances.

iRing computer vision technology is also directly incorporated into the entire line of IK Multimedia DJ apps like Groovemaker® and DJ Rig™ and will soon be included into other popular IK apps such as AmpliTube®, SampleTank®, VocaLive™ and more so that DJs, guitarists, vocalists, bass players, producers, keyboardists and engineers will have a new level of control to deliver powerful and unique performances.

For third-party developers who want to incorporate and implement iRing technology directly into their apps, IK is offering a free SDK (software development kit) and licensing program which makes it easy to take advantage of this new breakthrough technology. iRing can also be easily utilized beyond music for a wide variety of applications including gaming, health & fitness, utilities and more. Developers can take advantage of the technology and improve the functionality of their apps by contacting IK via the link provided on the iRing product page.

iRing features
  • Advanced motion-tracking technology provides remote control of iOS apps using hand positions and gestures
  • Includes two identical, double-sided reversible rings allowing for numerous control combinations and control of up to 6 effects’ parameters simultaneously with two hands
  • iRings are unique looking, light, comfortable and provide a universal fit
  • Free Apps available on the App StoreSM: iRing Music Maker app, which gives the ability to make music using hand gestures with no previous musical knowledge
  • Also, iRing FX/Controller app, which lets musicians and DJs create custom MIDI control setups, plus add and control audio effects, using compatible apps or external devices
  • iRing computer vision technology can be licensed and incorporated into other third-party apps including gaming, health & fitness, utilities and more

To be honest, I can't wait to try these things out!

Anyway, here's the entire description of the iRing FX app:

iRING FX/CONTROLLER – MUSIC CONTROL EVOLVES TO THE THIRD DIMENSION

iRing FX/Controller is the engine you need to bring your music performance in the third dimension. With iRing FX/Controller DJs and musicians get two apps in one: a real time audio effect processor and a MIDI controller, both controllable by your hand gestures, thanks to the new impressive iRing motion controller technology.

iRing FX/Controller can be fully operated using the device touchscreen, but unleashes its full potential with the iRing motion controllers (sold separately at your favorite electronics and music retailers), a set of two “rings” you wear on your fingers, to control music apps by waving your hands in front of your device camera. iRing features two sets of dot patterns that iRing FX/Controller app recognizes, translating their motion into control commands.

When iRing FX/Controller is used as a real time audio processor, you can control 2 simultaneous effects, selectable within 16 high quality tempo-synced creative effects; choose from effects like Filter, Delay, Compression, Reverb and Wah, or add a new level of audio creativity with our suite of wacky DJ effects like stutter, Fuzzy, Crush, Twist, Brake, Spin and Tail. You can process external audio in real time, fed through the digital or analog audio-input of your device, or thanks to AudioBus and Inter-App Audio compatibility you can use it on the audio stream of other compatible apps running in background on the same device.

Up to 3 parameters for each effect can be controlled simultaneously with iRing FX/Controller which supports IK's exclusive X-Sync features to detect tempo from external audio sources in realtime and automatically sync the effects tempo. iRing FX/Controller is extremely easy to use and with a little practice, you’ll be creating amazing performances in no time.

When used as a MIDI controller, iRing FX/Controller can transmit MIDI messages to other Virtual MIDI compatible apps running in background or to external devices using compatible MIDI interfaces (like iRig MIDI or iRig PRO). Send MIDI messages such as Control Change, Notes, Program Change, Pitch Wheel, After Touch, MIDI System Realtime, MMC (Midi Machine Control), with up to 3 assignable parameters (the X,Y,Z axis position) for each of the 2 detectable iRing. Store MIDI Message Presets in which you can add multiple assignments for each axis. Additionally MIDI messages can also be sent to Mac software applications wirelessly (using MIDI network).

Also multiple gestures are detected and can be used to send MIDI messages, like iRing show/hide, clockwise/counterclockwise rotation, camera field of view enter/exit and more. Control your MIDI compatible apps, software or hardware in a choreographic way for a new level of musical (or other) performance control. Free the flow of your creativity.

Turn your iPhone®, iPad® or iPod touch into the ultimate groove and dance music machine using the iRing controllers and the iRing Music Maker app. iRing Music Maker is the FREE companion app for IK Multimedia’s revolutionary iRing controllers that lets you make killer grooves and non-stop dance music by simply moving your hands in front of your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to change the grooves, play synth lines, control sound effects and create great dance music in real time with no prior music knowledge! iRing Music Maker is fun for everyone!

iRing Music Maker can be fully operated using the device touchscreen, but the real fun is when you use it with the iRing controllers (sold separately at your favorite electronics and music retailers), a set of two “rings” you wear on your hands that feature dot patterns that iRing Music Maker recognizes. You get 8 different “parts” (loop slots) that you can activate, and each of the parts has 9 different loop phrases that you mix into the groove.

Loop parts include different bass, drum, synth, guitar, percussion and multi-instrument loops that you can add to the groove in real time. And there are dozens of different loop phrases within each song, so the possible combinations are limited only by your creativity.

Plus, iRing Music Maker has an amazing selection of professional DJ effects that you can add and manipulate in your mixes, easily controlling the amount of effect applied.

On top of your groove, you can play and improvise impressive instrument lines, without any music knowledge, by using the included synth and bass synthesizer. Simply select your preferred sound and pattern bank, and play using the 8 melodic or rhythmic designs available in each pattern bank for hours of fun and creative expression.

iRing Music Maker also features a record function that lets you record your performance so you can share it with your friends via email, FTP or Soundcloud upload or use it in other apps on your device via audio copy.

Use the tutorials or define your own settings to fit the musical style you want to play and compose in. Play on up to eight instruments at once - all with different individual settings.

Gestrument works equally well for rhythmic music or sweeping soundscapes, for solo melodies or chord blocks, for long lines or short staccatos. It can help you make music in whichever genre you can imagine.

Gestrument works directly with its built in sounds and is therefore perfect for the amateur or beginner who wants to make music in an intuitive way. But it is first and foremost built for professional musicians and composers who can work with the settings to build advanced theoretical frameworks that they can later improvise or compose within.

The app is priced at $7.99.
