OrangeAid for iPad gives you a comprehensive Reason controller

I'm not a reason user, so I can't comment on if this is a good tool or not, but it looks like it's got a lot going for it. Here's the app's description:

Or you can use the feedback form in the app.

REQUIREMENTS
Compatible with iPad 2 or later and iPad mini or later. Requires iOS 7 or later.

Requires Reason 6.5 or later, or Reason Essentials 1.5 or later, with the accompanying OrangeAid Remote Codec installed (download from http://www.soundzest.com/support/).

Wi-Fi connection to a Windows PC requires 3rd-party software.

MIDI over Bluetooth LE requires a compatible iPad running iOS 8 or later, and a compatible Mac running OS X Yosemite v10.10. or later.

Wired connections require MIDI interfaces that support SysEx.

Visit http://www.soundzest.com/orangeaid/ for more information.

Reason, Reason Essentials and Remote are trademarks of Propellerhead Software AB. References or use of logos or trademarks do not necessarily constitute or imply an endorsement or recommendation by Propellerhead Software.

What's New
  • Layout auto-switching. Set OrangeAid to follow Reason’s Master Keyboard input, or use surface locking to control a specific device, and your Rack layouts automatically change to match.
  • Layout Quick Picker. Open or add another layout without having to navigate to the Layout Organizer and back again.
  • Super-fine parameter control for Knobs, Sliders & Pitch Wheel. While touching a control, move your finger off to the side (or above/below for the Horizontal Slider) to change the parameter value more precisely. The further away you move, the more precise it gets.
  • Filter by Parameter. Mountains might be mountains in Zen, but buttons are not always buttons in the Rack. Sometimes they're really switches (yes, I’m looking at you Mr Combinator!) Use ‘Filter by Parameter’ in the controls list to find control types guaranteed to match a particular parameter.
  • Bluetooth LE MIDI. If your iPad supports it, you can use Bluetooth LE MIDI to connect to a Mac running OS X Yosemite v10.10. or later.
  • Transport, Track & Patch controls always available in the toolbar.
  • Someone pointed out there are other colors besides orange. Yes, it’s true! And, as it happens, they’re quite handy for telling your Oscillator 1 from your Oscillator 2.
  • Improved syncing between OrangeAid and Reason.
  • Added support for devices in the full version of Reason with the OrangeAid Pro Upgrade In-App Purchase.
  • Added support for Propellerhead Rack Extensions with individual In-App Purchases.
  • iOS 9 compatibility.
  • A thousand other little fixes & tweaks that all add up to make things better.
OrangeAid costs $9.99 on the app store, plus IAPs as described above.

Rytmik Ultimate ... is coming to an iPad and 3DS near you

This is such great news, on the 10th of December Rytmik Ultimate will arrive on iOS! Brilliant! It's one of those apps that has made me want to get a 3DS, although I've never got around to getting one. Now that DS-10 has come to iOS (as the iDS-10) and as of the 10th, Rytmik Ultimate too, I think that I no longer need that 3DS. Maybe ...

Anyway, here are the videos for the iOS (iPad) and the 3DS versions. We'll talk about this again on the 10th I guess.

"Rytmik Ultimate is a powerful pocket music station allowing you not only to play with samples and musical instruments but also to mix them together, shape them and create music clips or tracks for your Friday night set-list.

Release date: 10th December 2015.
Platform: Apple iPad, new iPad, iPad mini, iPad Pro"

Kuvert from Klevgränd Produktion AB has arrived for your iPad

Kuvert - Swedish Envelopes from Klevgränd produktion on Vimeo.

Kuvert allows you to draw five different envelopes. These envelopes control different effect parameters, and can be drawn freely or onto a grid. The envelopes are looped, while the incoming audio isn’t (unless you’re feeding it looped material of course). This is a powerful & fun way of altering your sounds to a whole new level, sometimes not even recognizable! Thanks to the looping nature of the plug-in, it will fit very well into any musical context. One way of using it would be to revitalize any looped material within a few seconds.

Noteworthy features:
  • Volume envelope
  • Low cut filter envelope (with resonance)
  • High cut filter envelope (with resonance)
  • "Glitch" envelope (alters timing)
  • Delay send envelope (with tempo synchronised time, filter and feedback
  • IAA (With tempo sync if host sends it)
  • MIDI clock sync
  • Load / Save presets
  • Audiobus
  • Documentation (on the product web page)

The current price is $4.99. but this will go up on Dec 1st to $7.99

Fugue Machine | multi-playhead sequencer has arrived

There's been a lot of furious comment about this and lots of people seem very impressed. I haven't had a chance to take a look as yet, but when I do I'll let you know what I think.

For now, here's the app's description from iTunes:

BACH IN A BOX.

FUGUE MACHINE is a tool inspired by composition techniques used in Baroque music and Serialism — e.g. Bach’s canons and fugues, and Schoenberg’s twelve-tone technique. The idea was to design a tool to manipulate a melody’s speed, direction, and pitch, as well as play multiple variations of the melody simultaneously.

As it turned out, the best implementation for this was to reimagine one of the most fundamental building blocks of all music sequencers: the piano roll.

THE PIANO ROLL, REIMAGINED.

FUGUE MACHINE is the world’s first multi-playhead piano roll. Create a musical sequence and play it back with up to four playheads at once — each at various speeds, directions, and pitches. You see the playheads dance over the music sequence, and hear the complex patterns that emerge.

It’s mesmerizing.

FUGUE MACHINE costs $9.99 (£7.99) on the app store (click below):

AnalogKit First Video, and other stuff about modular apps too

I first mentioned AnalogKit here in this post, which then prompted this second more general post about modular apps. At that point I hadn't seen this video of AnalogKit in action, so it was good to see this and get a proper feel for what the app can do.

Personally I don't think that the debate is over with modular stuff on iOS or indeed on any mobile device. More about that another time I think.

For now there's this video from Jakob Haq about AnalogKit which you might find interesting.

You can find AnalogKit on the app store by clicking below

AnalogKit is another modular synth app for your iPad

Another modular iPad synth app on the app store. Well it's fair to say that this niche isn't too crowded so far. Of course there's Jasuto, Audulus and zMors Modular. And we shouldn't forget TC-11, Modal Pro, Thor, iVCS3, and of course, Modular. Ok, so there are a few, but that doesn't mean that there isn't room for another, and here's AnalogKit adding itself to the list. From the app's description (below) it seems like it has a lot to offer, although I haven't tried it out as yet, but the competition is very stiff indeed from the likes of Audulus and zMors Modular in particular, especially as Audulus 3 is coming soon.

Anyway, I'll let you make up your own mind. Here's what the app has to say for itself ...

AnalogKit lets you play, share, and build synths and effects in an incredible digital playground.

A music hacker's paradise, Analogkit is designed to be enjoyed by both seasoned synth aficionados and curious cable-wranglers. Whether you're into built-from-scratch effects pedals, synths, vocoders or even DIY games, AnalogKit allows you to build nearly anything you can dream of.
  • Piece together controls, effects and signal generators into any gear you can imagine.
  • 50+ included core components that can be combined to create endless possibilities of sounds.
  • Share your creations with the community via the built-in Swap Meet, or browse, live-preview, and download gear built by other users.
  • Compatible with many external audio interfaces so you can run AnalogKit as an effects board for mics, guitars, and other analog instruments.
  • Full USB, Bluetooth, and WiFi MIDI support to let you use your favorite external controllers
  • Advanced optimization algorithms enable you to run tens of thousands of basic modules in real-time on a modern iPad.
  • State of the art anti-aliased oscillators provide the most authentic sound sources digital synthesis can offer.
  • All the favorite toys from modular analog synths as well as digit logic components so you can build all the hybrid franken-synths your hardware modular friends could only dream of.

Under the hood, AnalogKit is anything but a toy. The process of putting things together with Analogkit is nothing less than an exploration of digital audio creation that's both revealing and powerful.

Like a supercharged electronics project kit, Analogkit lets you combine and wire things up in any way you want, rather than having to settle for adjusting settings on existing gear. Depending on what components you choose, it can be both a trippy generative app that's easy to lose hours with, or nimble and precise tool for building custom setups quickly.

Analogkit takes full advantage of its digital nature and lets you literally hook anything into anything, chain together as many of a thing as you like, and finally experiment like a kid again ...a kid that happens to have the best audio toy to come to the iPad yet.

Analogkit costs $9.99 on the app store

So it's true, the iPad Pro is a thing ... (and more about today's various announcements)

It was what everyone said was coming, and indeed it did come along. So what will we make of it? Is it a revolution, or is it just bigger, more powerful etc? Well the specs are impressive indeed. It's powerful. Four speakers are nice, but with the addition of the new 'Apple Pencil' it starts to look more and more like a Surface than an iPad. Except without an accessible file system of course. And actually how mobile will this be? It is big. Personally I've found the iPad Mini to be a better portable device for music making than the old format iPad. I'm not sure how this device is a step forward for mobile music making except in terms of its power.

As for Apple Pencil, didn't someone say something about your finger being the most natural pointing device? I seem to remember that from somewhere. Are we going backwards or is this just full circle.

As you can tell, I'm not sold on the Pro as yet. Not by a long way. However, the mini 4 does look like a nice upgrade, but not an innovation. Not in my book anyway.

Then there's the new iPhone ...

Force touch, or 3D touch as we're now calling it will bring some interesting developments, and that can only be a good thing. I like that. Faster is good too. But what does make me laugh is how Apple describes iOS9, "iOS 9 is our most advanced, intelligent and secure mobile operating system yet". What else would it be?

Anyway, I think the new S models are a reasonable step in the right direction. I won't be upgrading for a long time to come, but perhaps when iPhone 7 comes out.

Then there's the Apple TV and TVOS.

I had thought that there would be more mention of iOS integration, but no. Is that not on the agenda? Did I miss something? Maybe there'll be more to say about this later when it actually becomes available.

Of course the other news from Apple is that iOS9 is coming on the 16th. No doubt there'll be teething problems and then a swathe of updates on apps and also problems with music making. Just normal stuff really.

There was of course the Apple Watch, but I'm not going to mention that as I don't think that Apple sees wearables as viable for music making, and so far the attempts to do this haven't been ground breaking. I live in hope.

In other news Native released Reaktor 6. I'd wondered if they might also announce Reaktor for iPad, or iPad Pro, at least as a player. But sadly nothing so far. Again, I live in hope.

So it's been an eventful day. More will come out over time, but overall I'm not seeing real innovation coming forward. It doesn't feel like that to me.

BIAS FX arrives

We've been waiting and now it's here ...

BIAS FX turns your iPad into a world-class, guitar amp-and-effects processor. It gives you an endless collection of insanely great-sounding guitar pedalboards, ultra-high definition stereo rack effects, dual amps and dual signal chain. You can share and download users and artists signature guitar pedalboards from the cloud.

All new advanced multi-effects engine
Positive Grid's approach engineering BIAS FX with a no-compromise mindset, from a detailed touch in distortion emulation to the double precision algorithm in chorus, we strive for the best possible sound quality. A huge collection of newly developed, high-definition pedal and rack effects are included: gate, boosters, overdrive, distortion, fuzz, equalizers, tremolo, phaser, flanger, chorus, octaver, compressors, delays, spring and plate reverbs—everything a guitar player needs for massive tone, with all the flavor of both modern and vintage stomp boxes. Throw all that together – it is pedalboard heaven, but without the hassle of hauling around dozens of stomps in a heavy metal box and fumbling with a snakepit of cables. Show up at the studio or gig, boot up and play!

Insanely powerful, yet easy to use
BIAS FX is the most powerful processor ever designed by Positive Grid, yet its simple drag-and-drop interface makes it extremely easy to use. Dual amps provide the resonance and vibrancy of playing through two real amps set up together in wide stereo. When integrated with BIAS AMP (separate app), you can select a different preamp, power amp, cab, mic and eq for each of the two amps. Patch everything together, including all pedals and rack effects, in any order you wish in dual signal paths running in parallel.

Download pedalboard from the cloud
There are already hundreds of pedalboard configurations available on ToneCloud for you to own, and the banquet keeps getting bigger and bigger: Positive Grid are currently working with professional artists, producers, and engineers from all over the world to create a massive, ever-growing library of extraordinary virtual pedalboards and rigs for BIAS FX. Browsing and downloading from that library is a snap: All the effects and amps in each setup can be seen at a glance, because they’re stored as Pedalboard-like snapshots. Simply scroll through the online images to select the presets of interest, then tap or click to download.

Inter app audio routing engine
BIAS FX integrates a brand new inter-app audio routing engine, you can easily insert any Inter-App-Audio compatible audio apps in BIAS FX’s dual signal paths, just like connecting audio effects app with virtual cables. BIAS FX makes it easy to go nuts with your audio apps.

Key features:
  • Extremely intuitive operation
  • Unrivalled, component-level simulation, analog-like sound quality
  • 12 classic BIAS amps, import any amp models from BIAS AMP
  • 25 high-quality effect pedals with brand new sound-processing algorithms
  • 5 ultra-professional rack processors that sound like high-end analog gear
  • Full integration with BIAS AMP gives you unprecedented control over designing your own fully customized amps
  • Dual signal path and dual amp processing
  • Brand new splitter switches between and combines dual signal paths, adjusting the level and frequency range for each path to give you more tone-shaping possibilities
  • Live View mode lets you recall any preset with a single tap and toggle on/off any single effect or category of effects
  • Pedalboard View shows all the effects and amps in the currently loaded preset at once
  • Global Settings optimizes BIAS FX’s output to sound the best in any environment—including sending to a mixer, amp head or combo or stack power amp—by letting you EQ and selectively deactivate the app’s preamp, tone stack, power amp and cab separately for each destination.
  • Inter app audio routing engine lets you insert other compatible audio apps in any place in your BIAS FX signal path

BIAS FX is $29.99 on the app store now:

R0Verb consists of up to 50 separate delay lines, and puts you in charge of every single delay with controls for volume, pre-delay, feedback & high shelf. It can be used for everything from simple delays to complex spaces, whatever your mix needs. It also has a nice Randomizer if you're feeling lucky!

Features:
  • Up to 50 parallel delays*
  • Every delay has parameters for volume, pre-delay, feedback, delay time & a high shelving filter
  • Randomizer - creates a space with user-defined bounds
  • Multi-select and edit several delay-lines in one gesture
  • Post 3-band EQ
  • IAA and Audiobus2 compatible
  • Comes with a few factory presets for inspiration
  • Load / Save user presets
  • Remember IAA hosts (will automatically load last used settings when a host reconnect)
  • Documentation

* When using a lot of delay-lines this app consumes quite a bit of CPU. If you experience audio glitches and stuttering we recommend reducing the number of active delay-lines. iPad 2 or later is recommended, iPad 4 or later is preferred.

The app costs $3.99 (which is a bargain I think)

Four powerful and multipurpose chained effects, driven by trackpads for fast and easy sonic explorations. Like a million of pedal boards on a device.

Plug in any audio source, a guitar, a bass, a microphone, a DJ mixer. Or play your favorite iOS synth or drum machine with Audiobus or Apple Inter-App Audio. Or why not playing a track from your iTunes Music Library. Select one, two, three or four effects amongst 35 hi-quality digital audio effects and explore endless sonic possibilities. Delays, echos, reverbs, filters, tremolo, autowah, compressors, distortions, vocoders, resonators, etc… more possibilities that you can imagine.

At last, but not least, DFX is also a great little sound design machine. Just select one of the built-in tone synthesizers on the first effect and let your imagination build new sound landscapes at the tip of your fingers. We have had a lot fun making ours in the Factory presets.

No in-apps, no ads, no fuss. DFX is simple, intuitive and fun. No user guide required

Casio brings us the CZ App for iPad

Well it has arrived, Casio's first 'real' music app. Here are the details ...

This app reproduces the functionality of Casio’s best-selling CZ-series models, such as the CZ-101 (first released in 1984), and also includes new functions.
Featuring a built-in 4-part PD (phase distortion) sound source, its 36
waveforms are capable of generating an extensive and diverse range of sounds. The created tones can also be played on MIDI-compatible instruments.

The PD sound source system
Phase Distortion (PD) works by distorting a sine wave when it is read so that various different waveforms are produced. At the time, it was a ground-breaking system for generating waveforms other than simple sine waves.

An extensive parameter set to allow richly varied sound creation
Two block configuration systems are provided for each of the DCO, DCW and DCA
  • WAVE FORM (DCO1/DCO2)
    • Parameters to set basic waveforms.
  • KEY FOLLOW
    • One Key Follow feature (DCW1/DCW2) controls waveforms based on the upper and lower extent of the keyboard's register while the other Key Follow feature (DCA1/DCA2) controls the envelope duration based on the keyboard's register
  • DETUNE/LINE SELECT
  • CZ-series synthesizers allowed users to choose from 4 types of line output (1, 2, 1+2 or 1+1) depending on the purpose. Using 2 DCOs allowed the use of detuning to fine-tune the pitch shift in the two systems to within ±4 octaves, which is useful not only in creating a chorus effect, but also for producing sounds with specific harmonics emphasized.
  • RING/NOISE MODULATION
    • Ring modulation can be used to produce metallic tones that include non-integer harmonics, while noise modulation is effective in creating percussion-like sounds.
  • ENVELOPE GENERATOR
  • An envelope generator is provided for each DCO, DCW and DCA core block in the two systems, which makes it possible to vary the tuning, tones and volume over time.

Play along to your favorite audio files
You can use the keyboard to play along to audio files on an iPad.

Multi-play mode combines keyboard layouts toallow new ways of playing
The new performance interface lets you can combine 2, 3 or 4 keyboards, or even flip the layout so that other people can play along with you.

Supports external MIDI instruments and inter-app collaboration
  • Inter-App Audio
  • Audiobus compatible (input only)
  • Playable using an external MIDI keyboard(via a third-party MIDI interface, an Apple Lightning-USB camera adapter* plus USB cable, or the Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit* plus USB cable)

MonoStereo Synthesizer arrives and it's free too

MonoStereo Synthesizer is a free full-featured analog mono synth with oscillator panning.

Why another mono synth?
Well, because I thought it would be fun to make one! This one does have one thing you rarely find, and that's oscillator panning. With this you can create some nice effects using an LFO for the pan and also create wide stereo lead sounds easily!

The synth is completely free with no in-apps. If you feel the need to pay something for it, go see a gig by a local band! If that doesn't cover it, buy their t-shirt! (or their CD if you have one of those CD-players we used to have 3 years ago)

Features:
  • Minimalistic size, fast loading time and CoreMIDI Support!
  • 3 Oscillators with customisable waveform (sine, square, saw), phase, level, detune and pan
  • Lowpass and Highpass filters
  • 2 LFO's with customisable targets from filter values to oscillator panning and detune
  • Filter and Amp Envelopes
  • Portamento (almost named that 'Glide' but came to my senses. Portamento is portamento!)
  • Delay and Chorus effects (very basic, I know)
  • A few presets
  • Saving and loading your own sounds
  • Virtual keyboard
The app is free ...

Sparkle - Advanced Cross-Synthesis arrives for your iDevice

Another thoroughly intriguing app arrives from apeSoft. I can't wait to try this out!

Here are all the details of the app ...

Sparkle is a tool for advanced spectral hybridizations made of several algorithms that operate on frequency domain. By means of envelope preservation and phase-sync processing it can creates high-quality sound transformations.

The basic idea is to transfer the temporal structure of a sound (source) onto another sound (target) of which the spectral properties are preserved.
Simply put, you can take a voice and make it sing a Beethoven’s symphony!

Oriental Strings arrives for your iPad

Oriental Strings is the latest app from the developer of iSymphonic Orchestra. Here's all you need to know ...

Oriental Strings is a professional sound module app for oriental keyboard players and for musicians who simply want to resemble the typical sound of the Middle East in their songs. Connect an external MIDI keyboard to your iPad by using the Apple USB camera adapter or another adapter supported by Apple, or launch Oriental Strings as virtual instrument directly within your favourite DAW app on your iPad!¹

This app supports Apple's "Inter-App Audio" System (requires iOS 7 or higher) and the "JACK Audio Connection Kit" (up to iOS 6.1.3) for audio & MIDI connections from/to other audio apps!

The sounds of Oriental Strings were exclusively recorded with players who are professionally dedicated to oriental style of music. Typical string instrument sounds for the arabic genre are covered by this app. Besides rather exotic instruments like the Chinese erhu, typical western string instruments were used as well, but since the players of the recording sessions are focused on oriental music, those western instruments sound completely different than you might be used to from western orchestra players.

The sounds of this app were once again created by Kurt Ader, nominated as sound designer of the year for the upcoming NAMM winter show.

32 Sounds are included with this App:
  • Chinese Erhu 1 - 3
  • Chinese Erhu Trill
  • Turkish Strings 1 - 4
  • Arabian Strings 1 - 3
  • Tremolo Strings 1 - 5
  • Spiccato Strings

  • Oriental String Quartet 1 - 3
  • Oriental Staccato Strings
  • Arabian Solo Strings 1 - 3

  • Slow Oriental Strings

There is no in-app purchase in this app. So all sounds and all app features are immediately available to you as one buy.
