MultiTrack DAW 4 appears out of nowhere and brings loads of new stuff
New Features:
- Freeze tracks - drastically reduces processing for tracks with IAA effects, and frees up the plugins for use on other tracks.
- Loop Recording - allows continuous overwriting while it loops. Stop and undo after a good take.
- Smaller audio buffers - sizes of 64 are now supported for low latency monitoring.
- Rewritten audio engine for perfectly clean audio quality.
- Volume/pan adjustments are filtered and interpolated, no 'zippering'.
- Compressor uses exponential gain reduction metering.
- Long-Touch zipped song project icon now has 'Open in' button for sharing the zip.
- Final mixdown now uses loop markers as song start and end.
- Final mixdown won't overwrite older mixdowns with same name.
- All sorting/ordering uses numeric sort (Song, Shared, Inputs, IAA effects, generators, instruments).
- Silence rendered to IAA plugins when doing mixdown/copy operation, to flush out buffers.
- Wi-Fi web server lists songs in same order as shown in multitrack.
- Track and bin download filenames now contain the song name as prefix.
Bug Fixes:
- Fix an iPhone 6S bug with missing tabs (Export, Shared, and Upgrades).
- Fix iOS 9 bug with 2 finger pinch zooming sometimes popping back to another zoom level.
- Fix retina displays sometimes not able to open the Hotbox with a Long-Touch.
- Fix an Audiobus monitoring bug where no sound would be heard unless 'Input Monitoring' was on.
- Fix a bug when drag reordering 3 or more IAA track plugins.
- New Audiobus lib should fix the samplerate issues on iPhone 6S with internal speaker/mic.
- Fix a buffer size bug on cold start.
- Fix lights on compressor gain reduction meter being stuck sometimes when turning it off.
- SoundCloud fixes.
Music IO: Audio and MIDI over USB 1.4 is pretty impressive

FieldScaper 1.0 submitted to the app store!
I'm really looking forward to this app. Here's what to expect ...
"FieldScaper - Sound warp field recorder and scape constructor has been submitted for review.
Advanced field recorder combined with sound warp engine with a collection of ready to use dynamic presets for iPad and iPhone. Discover new ways to create and construct unusual and exciting sounds from any environmental audio recordings or samples recorded from other apps through Inter-App audio or Audiobus.
The main purpose of this advanced app is to shorten the way from recording samples to create spectacular soundscapes and in addition to use this app as glitch loop based effect in the real-time.
The FieldScaper consists of two main parts. The first part is the field recorder with special options for different ways of record environmental sound from microphone or record other sound sources. The second part is the scaper sound engine that with using dynamic presets can easily transform the most ordinary samples into something absolutely different. These parts connect with each other into one whole but you can use recorder or scaper separately.
The scaper sound engine contains three sample-based oscillators each with filters, delay, distortion and spatial mixer. The most of parameters can be assigned on individual low-frequency oscillators. With using the "Main effect" fader you can control several these parameters in different ranges. These features give you the abilty to create continuously changing, breaking and glitching sound forms and loop-based effects from ordinary samples of synths, guitars, voices or everyday sounds of the environment.
FieldScaper supports complete MIDI control for all faders, knobs and many buttons. You can change the parameters of oscillators, filters, delays and mixer by using any external MIDI controller or MIDI apps like sequencers. With the MIDI controllers this app becomes very comfortable to use at live performance."
Yonac's ToneStack 2.0 is coming

— Yonac Inc (@YonacSoftware) October 12, 2015Calculator Music: HoustonTracker 2 for the TI-82/83/83+/84+ (video) ... note, this is pretty awesom
Synthtopia and other sites picked this up and I have to admit that it really is a great story. I have to say that it reminds of the mode in Bhajis Loops that look like a spreadsheet so that if anyone caught you using it at work you could claim you were doing a spreadsheet on your PDA.
I love these kind of things, they just make me think about how awesome people are and how creative and making ordinary devices make music.
littleBits users rejoice, there's now an official littleBits app on the iOS store
I've been a littleBits user for some time now and have often wondered what they'd do in 'app' terms. This is a good start. It doesn't interface with your littleBits creations, but it does give you lots of suggestions and links to your littleBits online account.
I think that's a good start, but I hope it is just a start and that they'll add functionality to it over time.
For now, here's the app details from the store:
The littleBits App is your personal guide to unleashing creativity. Discover thousands of inventions, get inspiration for new projects, connect with the global littleBits community, access step-by-step project tutorials, and easily upload and share your own creations.
Learn how to make a blinking, buzzing, bumbling robot, a synth-keytar you can shred on, or the perfect way to automate your curtains to open with the sunrise.
- Get personalized littleBits project recommendations
- Explore thousands of inventions & instructions from people just like you
- Share your creations with other inventors in the littleBits community
- Earn badges by competing in community challenges and showcasing what you built
- Learn which inventions you can make with the Bits you own
- Manage your Bit inventory and build your collection
littleBits is a platform of easy-to-use electronic buildings blocks for you to create inventions large and small. These innovative building blocks snap together with tiny magnets, allowing anyone to build, invent, and prototype with electronics independent of age, gender and technical background – no soldering, wiring, or programming required.
The littleBits App is free on the app store:
BLOCKS - The World's First Modular Smartwatch (video), I know it isn't directly music related, but ...
I still have a hope that there will be some kind of wearable / smartwatch idea that can deal with music in a meaningful way, and, this seems to be a good contender. Let's see what it looks like on Tuesday when it launches on Kickstarter.

midiSTEPs - midi step sequencer toy from Art has arrived
Something new from Mr Kerns, the maker of the awesome FunkBox, and Little MIDI Machine apps. So this is bound to be good ....
Here's what to expect:
midiSTEPs is a powerful but fun MIDI step sequencer app that sends MIDI note and CC messages to other music apps and external synthesizers. It was designed to be super easy to use in a way that's similar to the SH-101 sequencer, where you can just quickly enter a few keyboard notes and you're ready to hit play. At the same time, it also incorporates many ideas from other classic and modern sequencers, allowing you to set control values per step, mute and skip existing steps, switch between multiple patterns and parts, sync and link patterns in various ways, and modify your sequences.
midiSTEPs was designed from the ground up as a touch-based iPad sequencer app, so it's super easy and intuitive to enter, edit and play sequences.
midiSTEPs features:
- 64 step sequencer based on the classic SH-101 sequencer
- Set note, chord or rest per step
- Set accent and tie per step
- Set CC, velocity, length parameters per step
- Mute and skip individual steps
- Set start and end points within sequence
- Edit individual steps
- Transpose, loop or one shot, start and pattern sync options
- Four independent sequencer parts with 16 patterns each per set
- Parts can have different speeds, lengths, sync and trigger options
- Pattern Mix page with clip-launcher style pattern triggering
- External MIDI clock sync with clock shift adjustments and swing
- Easy to set up CoreMIDI configuration and MIDI mapping
- Easy to use touch interface designed specifically for iPad
midiSTEPs costs $9.99 (£7.99) on the app store now (click below):

— MicSwap (@micswap) October 7, 2015Fugue Machine | multi-playhead sequencer has arrived
There's been a lot of furious comment about this and lots of people seem very impressed. I haven't had a chance to take a look as yet, but when I do I'll let you know what I think.
For now, here's the app's description from iTunes:
BACH IN A BOX.
FUGUE MACHINE is a tool inspired by composition techniques used in Baroque music and Serialism — e.g. Bach’s canons and fugues, and Schoenberg’s twelve-tone technique. The idea was to design a tool to manipulate a melody’s speed, direction, and pitch, as well as play multiple variations of the melody simultaneously.
As it turned out, the best implementation for this was to reimagine one of the most fundamental building blocks of all music sequencers: the piano roll.
THE PIANO ROLL, REIMAGINED.
FUGUE MACHINE is the world’s first multi-playhead piano roll. Create a musical sequence and play it back with up to four playheads at once — each at various speeds, directions, and pitches. You see the playheads dance over the music sequence, and hear the complex patterns that emerge.
It’s mesmerizing.
FUGUE MACHINE costs $9.99 (£7.99) on the app store (click below):

Something new coming from the maker of FunkBox
My second MIDI app got through app review! It's a MIDI step sequencer inspired by an old favorite, the SH-101. It will be released tomorrow.

Well, this is a bit of a throwback - sounds like something I would have done three years ago. It's OK I guess but (rules being rules) I had to get it done so I could get on with the next thing. Spent a massive amount of time looking fr vocal samples for this and failed to find anything suitable..

AX37b's last 8 minutes of life by pantsofdeath
Image by the totally awesome Russian artist Waldemar von Kazak. This is a quick xynthesizr experiment with a bass part and some randomly created notes over the top, heavily FX processed. Drums from ielectribe and Diode-108. Two improvised 16 bar animoog parts played over the top. The finished piece put me in mind of a self aware robot/android having a quiet moment of introspection as it's circuits burnt out and failed, found this image and thought it fit pretty well.
