Back in 2007: Belkin announces the TuneStudio

I remember when this first arrived in 2007. It was a huge step forward for mobile music production. I never got one but every now and then I have a look on eBay to see if there's one going cheap. I know I wouldn't use it, but it's a little piece of history.

svärm arrives

svärm implements a colorfull particle swarm that reacts to music and sounds. By computing the frequency spectrum in real time svärm can handle both recorded and live sounds. Inputs are microphone, line in, the iPod music library and/or audio bus.
  • microphone, line in.
  • import iPod library.
  • audiobus.
And the app is free.

I've no idea where this photo came from, but I do like it

Musical Android on a new app coming from the Makers of PocketBand Pro

The ever useful Musical Android posts about a new app coming from the makers of PocketBand Pro, which was uLoops I think.

Anyway, it seems they have something new in the works, which is great as I think we always need more Android music making stuff.

14 Predictions for 2014: 1 - Android will start to catch up (a bit)

It's only fair to say that Android hasn't been a platform for making music in a big way so far, but I think that'll change this year, or at least it'll start to change anyway. In fact, you could argue that it has already with the arrival of the truly amazing Caustic 3 for Android and iOS.

My hope is that this will be the tip of the iceberg for Android, and that we'll start to see more interesting things happening in that space. However, I don't think it'll suddenly be a new iOS or a real challenger. No, I think it'll develop in a very different way to what we've seen to date with iOS, and that in itself will be more interesting.

Android by definition is a more open OS than iOS, that's a given, but as a result of that the possibilities a very different and so I don't think it should be viewed in the same way as iOS at all. My guess, or my prediction, is that we'll see more environments for making in Android. Systems that will allow users to make things for themselves. Perhaps something between Android app inventor and Patchfield. Now that would make for an interesting diversion.

Anyway, that's my view, but as ever, I'm interested in knowing what you think about Android.

Anything new for the wait list?

It's Monday, is there anything that needs adding into the wait list? Let me know if there is, or just take a look and see what's coming up.

What are you expecting from CES?

It's that season now isn't it. So, any predictions about CES? What will we see? Will we be impressed? What's going to really WOW? If anything at all?

Max for live device for controlling iMS-20

Interesting to see a M4L device that's been made specifically to control and iPad app. I'll have to give it a go at some point, but if you get there before me (which is very likely), let me know what you think.

You can find the M4L file here.

Are you using Dropbox with your apps?

If you're not using dropbox then it's something you should to check out as loads of apps are now using it as a default for online storage and for a variety of other purposes too, and it works quite well in my view. If you're not using it you can get your own dropbox by clicking this link, and what's more you'll get an extra 500mb just for using this link (and so will I)!

2014: Things to look forward to, 2

New was to get to Audiotool this year. You might remember that I posted this a little while ago:
Many thanks to janogarcia for commenting this in on yesterday's wait list post. It's from the AudioTool newsletter:

“We are confident that 2014 will see the Audiotool application running on HTML5 in the browser and natively on a variety of platforms like iOS and Android.”

That's something awesome to look forward to in 2014!
Audiotool is one of those Android apps I've always wanted to try out but it's never run on any device I've had so it'll be great to see it properly come to Android, and to iOS as well.

And here's the first round up of 2014 ...

Well we haven't had a round up for a while now, in fact since the 22nd of December, so it seems fair to do a round up of everything that's happened since then.

New apps:

App updates:

Other big news and things to look forward to:

So quite a lot happened then, and lots of things to look forward to. Enjoy what's left of the weekend. See you all tomorrow.

SoundFont Pro update

Here's what's new with SoundFont Pro:

SoundFont Pro has gone Multi-timbral with a bang. Here are the features of this major update:
  • Multi-timbral, Multi-layered and Multi-zonal Arrangements
  • SoundFont Pro now introduces the concept of arrangements, much like how you set up arrangements on an Arranger keyboard.
  • You can divide your keyboard in up to 4 distinct zones using the flexible range control.
  • Each zone can have up to two presets layered from any soundfont of your choosing. This means that overall, you can, if you so desire, select and play 8 presets from 8 different soundfonts simultaneously!
  • Each zone can receive input from the same or a different MIDI channel.
  • You can also set the Relative Volume and Dry/Wet ratio of each preset individually.
  • For each preset, you can set the octave shift in the range of +-5 octaves.
  • At any time, you can turn on a HUD display of the current arrangement and see the zone ranges, assigned presets, octave shifts and MIDI channels.

A Pro Quality Metronome & Count-in feature is included with the following features:
  • Turn sound on or off
  • Turn visual indicator on or off
  • Tempo and Tap Tempo
  • Multiple Time signatures including 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8, 12/8
  • Individual Sounds for Accent and Non-Accent Beats
  • Volume controls for Accent and Non-Accent Beats

Modulator Grid Enhancements:
  • Lock Unlock Position
  • Double Tap to return to 0,0 position

2014: Things to look forward to, 1

I thought I'd write about a few things that I'm looking forward to this year and that I expect you'll be looking forward to as well. I'm not sure at this stage how many of these posts I'll do, but if I get to 14 that'll be about it I expect.

So, for the first of these, something I'm sure that the vast majority of iOS music makers are looking forward to, Audiobus 2 of course!

We've seen videos, we've seen screenshots and we've heard some of the features that are coming to Audiobus 2, and it sounds and looks amazing.

I think that one of the most interesting things will be seeing how people share their workflows on social media networks. Preset or patch sharing (I'm still most fond of bus routes) will make Audiobus 2 really powerful as I'm always amazed by how people use and combine their music making apps in ways I haven't thought of before.

So it's a big one to look forward to and I'm sure it'll be great when it arrives. I'm especially looking forward to finding out about the features that they haven't made public so far. I'm always curious about that kind of thing.

So here's to Audiobus 2 in 2014. Definitely one to look forward to.

MIDI Designer Pro 1.6 is huge!

So here's the whole thing. MIDI Designer Pro 1.6 brings a massive amount of updates, fixes and, well, stuff. Here's the lot. Enjoy!

1.6.0 is a major upgrade: big features, stability/defect fixes, and upgrades.

PERFORMANCE MODE GAME CHANGERS
  • Presets for groups of controls. This is a rich and deep feature. See midiDude.com/presets16 for more.
  • Sliders and crossfaders can be made into "ribbon strips," which jump to the absolute touch position
  • High-precision sliders, knobs, crossfaders (move away in 2nd dimension for more precision)
  • "Make Toggle & Hold" for momentary buttons: momentary buttons can be switched to toggles temporarily with another (toggle) button

DESIGN MODE GAME CHANGERS
  • 4 different locks in design mode allow users to lock control types (e.g., panels) making the design process much simpler
  • Custom page colors allow for lots of design flexibility. This feature was originally called "Gray Page" but has moved on from there [Early video on PalmSounds](http://www.palmsounds.net/2013/12/gray-page-new-advanced-design-feature.html)... new video coming soon.
  • New control type: Multiline Labels
  • New control type: Shapes (vertical and horizontal lines for now)
  • Labels and multiline labels have adjustable alpha and LED color

IMPORTANT BUG FIXES
  • Fixed: Bug with knob max values for non-retina devices and odd-numbers of ticks
  • Fixed: Bug with front-back layering when same page is showing on both sides (iPad)
  • Fixed: Lag and slowness on iPad retina
  • Fixed: Page color picker for iOS 7
  • Fixed: LED color picker (for controls)
  • Fixed: Y dimension of XY pads wasn't participating in any presets, including first load and other, similar cases
  • First fix for MIDI loops in button groups with bidirectional hardware. Buttons sending off that have same MIDI message as button sending ON value will not send

OTHER NEW FEATURES
  • Design refresh to Antares Peavey AT-200 Auto-Tune Guitar Layout by Chris Gretton
  • "Smart-naming" for make similar is now an option
  • Slightly reduced file-sizes for layouts and pages
  • Throttle for batch sends (send all, reset to default, presets)
  • New button shape: round (ellipse)

OTHER BUG FIXES AND ENHANCEMENTS
  • Panels are always behind all other controls, but now respect their order. Use send-to-back for all ordering options
  • Fixed: [bug with bidirectionality and named ticks](/qa/2195/problem-with-bidirectionality-and-named-ticks-button-groups)
  • Fixed: changing color highlight color doesn't update buttons
  • Labels can now be layered at any level above panels
  • Label shading fixed for non-retina and retina displays
  • Some assets updated for retina display
  • Fixed: supercontrols no subs warning
  • Removed pedalboards feature warning
  • Fixed sticky editing for control names
  • Page highlight color white was not persisting (older problem)

Some amazing stuff coming to Sunvox

I'm a big fan of Sunvox, I have been for a long time now. So this post from Musical Android is just great news, and it answers the question (or at least I think it does) of where the IDE for pixilang will come from, and it makes the most sense as well. Having an IDE for pixilang inside Sunvox is just sheer genius.

YouCompose, advanced mobile classical music writing app arrives

I don't often feature notation apps these days but this one did catch my eye and made me wonder if it might be a good fit for me personally. Here's the description of the app:

YouCompose is the most advanced mobile classical music writing application available today.

Using the rules from the ‘common practice period’, YouCompose provides you the tools you need to create great compositions in a classical 4 part harmony style.

YouCompose comes with a built-in assistant composer. This assistant can help you compose your music in many ways.

You can enter melodies using the built-in virtual keyboard (with metronome) or enter single notes in a grid editor. Your assistant composer will then harmonize your melodies.

You can influence the way the assistant harmonizes your melodies, by setting harmonization points and other options, or you can also leave that completely to your assistant.

You can ask your assistant to compose a melody or even a complete composition.

A composition can be edited in many ways. YouCompose allows you to copy, paste, move, repeat and discard movements, segments and individual notes, enter lyrics, transpose, change gain etc.

YouCompose can play your composition with its built-in instruments and since YouCompose is Core MIDI compatible, you can also utilize a MIDI keyboard or a MIDI sound module.

You can view your composition’s full score or the individual parts and print them directly from YouCompose to an AirPrint compatible printer.

You can save compositions to your device and load them again later. Additionally, YouCompose allows you to send and receive them from other devices running YouCompose via an AirDrop connection.

You can share your composition with others by sending an email containing MIDI files and a PDF document with the full score and the individual parts.

A complete user manual is included in the App and you can print it to an AirPrint compatible printer.

Several sample compositions containing well known melodies are also included in the package.

The app is priced at $2.99

And there's a new user guide for Sinusoid too

You can find it here.

Sinusoid update brings new audiocopy and more

Here's what's new in the latest version of Sinusoid:
  • Adding MAPI audio copy 2.0.
  • Adding per note stereo pan (touch selected cell).
  • Adding per note envelope speed multiplier (touch selected cell).

What will you spring clean on your iOS device?

What will you spring clean from your iOS device?

Are you using mobile music live?
