All the research made for the Zune went in the WP7 development (both in software and hardware, I don't know many companies who would simply throw it away years of research), which is good since the interface was great and a lot of people liked it.
Of course it never was as popular as the ipod, but they still sold a few millions of them.

They say they would use the tech in WP7, so its not a complete loss.
What "tech" are you referring to, and what do you mean it's not a "complete loss"?
