Surface DJ (lite) updated

Surface DJ for the iphone has been updated. The new version is now called 'Surface DJ Lite', and the iTunes write up says that the lite version has some of the features that the full version will have when ready.

Anyway, this version is free and still quite a lot of fun really.

Garnet is no more

No that Palm has dumped Garnet OS and has put everything into webOS and the Pre, who will write new apps for Garnet, and most importantly, who will right music and audio apps?

If there are any Palm developers reading, please get in touch.

A new Thingamapop will set you back $120 directly from Bleep Labs, so at the time of writing this one is quite reasonably priced.

Of course, you might want to make your own!

Retro Percussion Synth from eBay

Thanks to sigfpe for this comment:
Does anyone have the original magazine this came from? I seem to remember it having the music for Ultravox's Mr X in it. I used it to write a program for the BBC Micro but I fancy rewriting it for a modern computer. (Replies to this should arrive in my email.)

If anyone knows a source for these magazines, please either comment them on this post or email me and I'll post it.

MMW Catalogue: miniMIXA

After posting the other day about soundFishing I thought I'd write again about another entry in the catalogue. This time something that is far more topical.

When the MMW visited Brighton in 2006 one of the hands on sessions was with miniMIXA (now Mixtikl). It was interesting reading the article about miniMIXA and remembering looking forward to the next version. In 2006 I'd only just started this blog and I missed the workshop that year which was a real shame given that it was in Brighton and less than an hour away on the train.

Reading about miniMIXA reminded me how far things have moved on since 2006, and how much more Intermorphic have achieved with Mixtikl.

I don't know where or when this year's workshop is, but as soon as I do I'll let you know, and I'll try and look out some more interesting stuff from the catalogue too.

Mixtikl updated to version 1.0.0.5

Mixtikl has been updated to version 1.0.0.5. Here are the changes:
  • Modified choice of "Home" on Windows Mobile devices with storage card, such that if you have installed your softare to storage card, it uses that as the home folder. This makes it a lot easier to use your own large custom content paks; provided you install Mixtikl to a Storage Card!
  • Implemented a work-around for a problem in Windows Mobile, where using lots of content zip files on storage card could lead to files failing to open; this was a due to a bug/restriction in Windows Mobile, that seems to be present in all devices.
  • Fixed bug where if you tap in a blank area in a dialog (e.g. when editing an effect unit), that dialog might close

Cosmovox update

Cosmovox has been updated with some new scales. What I'd really like to see in Cosmovox is the ability to record a session and overdub it. That would be quite an interesting feature. Also, I'd love to be able to export the recording to a wav file or indeed into Beatmaker.

Question about net labels

I've been thinking about getting some of my own music out and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on net labels who are sympathetic to mobile music?

All suggestions welcome.

MMW Catalogue: soundFishing

Back in November I wrote about the Mobile Music Workshop catalogue that was published at the end of last year. I said in November that I might write about some of the projects and papers in the catalogue, and I'm just getting around to it.

One that caught my eye was called 'soundFishing'. Basically the concept is similar to taking pictures whilst travelling (something I enjoy a lot), but instead of images you capture sounds. I like this idea. I used to take time to record snippets of sounds when out and about to put into recordings, or to make whole pieces from, but the idea of having a device that would pick these up based on a series of criteria is a different idea altogether.

Noise IO and Beatmaker integration

I managed to try this out for myself last night. In many ways I really did expect it to fail somehow, but it didn't at all. I recorded a small segment in Noise IO Pro and then went off into Beatmaker and imported it to a pad. It was really straightforward.

This functionality really opens up the doors to doing more interesting things with sounds and sequences in Beatmaker, and if other developers can make their sounds / recordings available to beatmaker for import then things could get really interesting.

If you've been using this import and have experiences you want to share, please comment them in here.

StageFeaver for iPhone

Here's another new iPhone app. This seems to be some kind of effects box for iPhone. StageFeaver looks quite interesting, and reminds me of Pocket Stompbox from 4Pockets, although this doesn't seem as fully functional. I'd tell you more but the entire write for StageFeaver on the app store seems to be in German, which is not one of my strong points.

Circuit bent VL-1 on eBay

Is it me or do there seem to be more of these around these days? It does look nice I have to admit, but in some ways I might want to do one of my own if I ever get a chance.

Anyway, here's the link to it on ebay. I wonder how much it will go for?

I saw this on Synthtopia. Interesting concept (and nice blue light in the box). The sounds reminds me of my project SliderOn, which used a very similar idea but was slower, and was software as well.

Noise IO getting MIDI support soon

The clever people over at Noise IO Pro have just posted this:
Some more great news for you, Noise addicts!

We've come down to an agreement with Nonnus of Silicon Studios / iTouchMidi, the author of excellent iTM apps.

This means that soon, Noise.io will get Midi-over-Wi-fi functionality!

Noise.io will be able to connect to time-proven, stable iTouchMidi server desktop programs (available for free, Mac & PC, any DAW).

With Midi functionality, Noise.io will behave exactly like a 21st century synth :-)

Stay tuned! More information to follow soon!*

All of which is excellent news for users of Noise IO Pro, and of course continues to make the iPhone platform a more interesting and useful place for music.

Mixtikl and MIDI

I finally got some time to use Mixtikl again today. I decided to see what it was like with a few MIDI files. So I exported a MIDI file from Bhajis (running under Styletap) on my Axim and ran it in Mixtikl. The results were really good. I started to try and use the Partikl engine too, but ran out of time. I'm hoping that I'll get some more time to use this app over the next few weeks, and as I do I'll post more experiences of it as I go.

More thoughts on Randgrid

I had 10 minutes to play with the latest version of Rangrid today. Whilst in some ways it does resemble Microbe, it doesn't have the export facility and plug in architecture that you'll be used to if you're a use of Microbe.

In other ways it reminds me of the Korg DS-10, but again, without the patch functionality.

Overall it is a nice app, but I'd like to see it go further. With export to WAV and maybe even Beatmaker integration too?

I like that lots of these apps are popping up and developing into nice little feature rich mini studios. I think it is good to have lots of choice when you work with mobile apps.

Emulators I'd like to see on the iPhone OS

Ok, I know that Apple have made their decision not to allow emulators into their iPhone, but if they did, this is what I'd like to see.
  1. A Newton emulator: Just because it would be fun and somewhat ironic
  2. A Palm OS Garnet emulator: Obviously to run the likes of Bhajis, Microbe and miniMusic apps too.
  3. Mobile Processing / Java: I think it would be good to be able to run Mobile processing and java apps on the iPhone platform.
  4. ZX Spectrum: Ok, you might suggest that this is a little odd, but I still like to be able to run old speccy apps.
Any emulations you think are a must have?
