Back in 2008: A first round up on iPhone apps

It's strange to think of a time when you could round up all the apps for a platform (like iOS) in a single post. But back in 2008 this is what I did. You can read the round up of the first batch of iPhone music making apps right here.

Back in 2008: miniSynth arrived!

Well it didn't take very long to get here. After a quick look yesterday miniSynth from Yonac arrived the next day (today). You can read the original post here.

Arpeggio has arrived on Kickstarter and it's even better than I was expecting!

So Arpeggio is on Kickstarter right on schedule and in its first day is doing really well, with nearly a quarter of its funding goal already hit! And that's in just a few hours. I feel sure that this one is going to go places.

One thing that I'm really impressed with is what they're trying to do in terms of integrating the hardware with a companion app. That's clever, a really smart, and, these days, a really important step. Here's what they plan that you'll be able to do with the app:
  • Connect to Arpeggio via bluetooth or usb
  • Create backups of Arpeggio data including sequences/songs/sets, advanced sequencer settings, MIDI and I/O settings, synth patches and parameter values.
  • Edit the sequences stored on Arpeggio
  • Edit synth parameters of the patches stored on Arpeggio, create new synth patches and upload individual synth patches to Arpeggio.
  • Export sequences, songs, and sets as standard MIDI files or other format useful for DAWs
  • Share sequences, songs, sets, and synth patches over bluetooth from one Arpeggio to another.
  • Adjust the advanced sequencer settings, MIDI and I/O settings on Arpeggio
  • Update firmware, on Arpeggio, restore to factory defaults.
  • Cross platform application iOS / Android / OSX / Windows
That in itself is a pretty impressive list of features.

And if that wasn't enough, guess who's in the media list ...

So, please do check it out, take a look at all they've got to say about the device and how they've got to where they are.

Back in 2009: A surprise coming to Windows Mobile!

Well in 2009 as everything was moving more and more towards iOS (as it was to become) I didn't expect to see 4Pockets announced Aurora for Windows Mobile. It was a complete surprise although not in any way unwelcome at all. I still have it on my Windows Mobile PDA. Read the original post on Aurora for Windows Mobile.

Last reminder: Genome MIDI Sequencer is half price

Don't forget that Genome MIDI Sequencer is half price until the 30th of this month. So you've got a few more days to grab this excellent MIDI sequencer.

It's down from $12.99 to $6.99.

Back in 2008: A first look at Yonac's miniSynth

Yonac's first ever iPhone app, miniSynth was an amazing step to see a little synth on your iPhone. You can read the original post (with video) here.

3D Touch is going to be a big deal I think

So the new iPhone 6s and 6s+ have 3D Touch. It looked like an interesting feature when Apple brought it to the MacBook Pro, and now on mobile it looks like being even more important. But why?

I've been watching what non-music apps have been doing with 3D touch, and I have to say it's pretty impressive. It seems to have created a whole new control dimension to the device.

But for music apps it's going to do a lot more than that. If you look at some of the posts earlier today you can see that already there's a bunch of new functionality that's going to rely on 3D touch. I think that we're going to see a great deal more of this, and we're going to see a lot of truly interesting implementations of 3D touch coming in the next few weeks. In my opinion it will be the control dimension that gestural should have been, but in many ways wasn't.
  1. So if you're a developer, what are you thinking about in terms of 3D touch and how it'll work for your app?
  2. If you're a mobile musician, what are you thinking about in terms of how you'd like to see 3D touch in your favourite apps?
I don't think that this is going to go away. It'll end up being something that we just take for granted. That's what I think anyway.

bs-16i on the app store:

From the makers of Thicket comes variant:SONiC and some other apps too

variant:SONiC is an audiovisual artwork that creates beautiful, ever-changing music and imagery. The app combines user input and built-in randomness to create images and music that will continually change, grow and evolve, offering a new and different experience every time. For users of all ages, variant:SONiC is a chance to explore and experience a unique work of generative art.

variant:SONiC was commissioned by the American Composers Orchestra for the 2015 SONiC Festival. The musical composition is built entirely from individual notes played by different participants in the festival, including:
  • Andy Akiho
  • Alarm Will Sound (Miles Brown, Michael Clayville, Erin Lesser, Courtney Orlando, Jason Price)
  • Clarice Assad
  • Christopher Cerrone
  • The Crossing
  • Melody Eötvös
  • Angelica Negron
  • Nieuw Amsterdams Peil (Gerard Bouwhuis, Heleen Hulst)
  • Nina C. Young

To interact with variant:SONiC, tap the screen; each tap will trigger a randomly selected fragment of the musical composition, as well as a visual element that responds to it. You can steer the visuals by dragging after tapping, and you can trigger up to 10 sounds at one time. To repeat a sound, keep your finger held down and that sound will loop. By using some fingers to loop sounds and others to trigger individual elements, you can build up complex combinations of sound and visuals.

You can view the indeterminate audio engine by tapping the dot in the lower right. The display shows the different elements of the musical composition as they are loaded by the engine through a combination of chance and user input. The center button opens a menu of settings for the app, and the button to the right allows you to take screenshots of the visuals, automatically saving them to your photo library.

The Variant apps are a new series of generative audiovisual artworks from Interval Studios featuring visuals by Joshue Ott and music by Kenneth Kirschner. Each Variant features a unique visual composition by Ott based on his superDraw visual performance software, as well as a new indeterminate musical composition by Kirschner. Each Variant app also offers a different set of interactive controls for the user, ranging from the ability to subtly influence the development of the piece to total interactive control over both visuals and sound. All of the Variants are generative artworks: through a varying combination of built-in randomness and user input, each Variant will continually grow and evolve over time without ever directly repeating itself either visually or musically, offering the user an ever-changing, ever-evolving audiovisual experience.

Don't forget that Yonac's flagship Magellan app for iPad is available for just $0.99

Yonac's Magellan for iPad is on sale and down from $14.99 to just $0.99 to celebrate their 7th birthday. That's a great deal!

So it's a big congratulations to Yonac, 7 years on the app store

I can't believe that it's 7 years that Yonac have been on the app store! That's amazing! Truly amazing. So I thought we should have a little celebration of sorts and look back at the last few years and some of the amazing apps they've delivered to us.

Let's start off with Thereminator ...

Thereminator was one of the first music apps on the app store. I can still remember trying it on my iPod touch (1st gen) and starting to think about how mobile music might develop ...

Then of course came miniSynth!

Which was in itself a real revelation (and they brought us miniSynth 2 as well).

You might realise that I'm missing out some of their apps (there were a lot), so I'm moving on to AirVox

Which I still think is a totally amazing app. AirVox is still a brilliant app and one of the closest things to having a real theremin in my opinion.

Next, Magellan, their flagship synth, and it's amazing.

I've skipped over lots of their apps, and they're all worth a look, but more than anything I'm just really pleased to see Yonac still around after 7 years on the app store. I look forward to seeing even more amazing stuff from them in the years to come.

Congratulations Yonac!

And more savings from Yonac ...

n-Track Studio & Marshall London (video)

Video description:

"Watch how you can use n-Track Studio for Android with the new Marshall London phone to record two tracks at the same time. One of the peculiarities of the Marshall London is that it has two separate audio jacks, that allow plugging in two mics.

In this video we used the standard headset that comes with the phone to record the harmonica, while we used a simple splitter cable to connect the acoustic-electric guitar output to the phone audio input and a set of standard (no mic) headphones as well, so that both players could hear what they've been playing.

On all platforms in which it runs (Windows, Mac, Android and iOS) n-Track Studio always allows to record from as many audio inputs as the audio hardware allows. On Android n-Track supports using external USB audio devices, but with the Marshall London there's no need for external devices to record two simultaneous tracks."

TweakyBeat is free and now has Audiobus Remote too

TweakyBeat has added support for Audiobus Remote, and it is once again free. So if you don't have it then grab it now.

AnalogKit First Video, and other stuff about modular apps too

I first mentioned AnalogKit here in this post, which then prompted this second more general post about modular apps. At that point I hadn't seen this video of AnalogKit in action, so it was good to see this and get a proper feel for what the app can do.

Personally I don't think that the debate is over with modular stuff on iOS or indeed on any mobile device. More about that another time I think.

For now there's this video from Jakob Haq about AnalogKit which you might find interesting.

You can find AnalogKit on the app store by clicking below

The History of Sunvox in screen shots

I'm sure most of you will know SunVox and be aware of just how awesome it is and has become. But I expect that few people will be aware of how long it has been around and how it evolved. I actually remember using SunVox on an old Palm OS Treo 650. It was awesome even then. Just look at how far it has come since it started.

But this begs a few questions. Just how is it that such a complex piece of software has been made so widely cross-platform and grown so much with the vision of just one person. Ok, one really amazing person, but there is only one NightRadio,

Well here you can find all of the screen shots of SunVox, the complete history, and long may it continue to get better and better.

So, Modular is huge right now, but is it right for mobile music?

I was prompted to think about this because of two app initially, Patterning, Olympia Noise Co's new drum machine for iPad, and AnalogKit, a new modular app, again for your iPad. In addition, I think that what tipped me over in writing this piece was the latest update to zMors Modular (see last post below).

For ages now I've seen mobile music as having a number of really important elements that in many ways differentiate it from other types of music making, especially electronic music making. These are:
  1. Immediacy - The app is obvious, you can see how to use it and understand it. You're able to get up and running really quickly.
  2. Accessibility - And I'm not just talking about accessibility from a disability perspective. I'm talking about music software that's easy to get to and once you're there it's easy to make use of.
There are other elements, but for now these two will do.

If you look at Olympia Noise Co's Patterning app, that fits the bill really well. You can work out what's going on very quickly, it's pretty obvious how to use it and how to create patterns. Sure, there's more depth to it, but you can get to that later, and if you don't want to go there you don't have to at all. But in terms of immediacy and accessibility I think it does very well.

Then we have a whole different type of app, the modulars. In this I'll include zMors, Jasuto, Audulus and Modular. I haven't actually tried out AnalogKit so far, so I'll mention it, but not go into any depth with it.

Arguably non of these apps fulfills either of the two elements above. In terms of immediacy they all fail. In fact with a lot of the modular apps on iOS (as there are precious few on Android) you'd be hard pressed to know what to do without a fairly advanced idea of how synthesizers work. You'd probably also need to know how modular synths operate, and then also have a clear idea of some of the specifics of how all of that is implemented in the app in question. So, immediate, no, not really, in fact, not at all.

In terms of accessibility all of these types of apps also fail. There's no real question of that at all.

It isn't to say for one minute that I'm not a fan of either these types of apps, or indeed some of the specific apps themselves. I am. However, the point I'm trying to make or explore is how these hugely complex apps, within which users can create some totally awesome patches, can be made more immediate and accessible.

That might sound like a huge and overwhelmingly difficult task, but I think that it can be done and at the very least should be attempted. It isn't impossible either. If you look at what Korg did with the DS-10 interface for the DS-lite you can see that they managed to make that easy to use (or at least easier anyway), and in some ways almost gamelike.

So what am I trying to say and why?

Well, if you've got this far it's only fair to say thanks for reading this somewhat rambling post. I'll get to the point though. I like the idea of modular and I like the idea of mobile music, but I think if we're to get more people interested in and using modular apps on mobile we need to make these apps more accessible. That doesn't mean dumbed down, not at all, it means more accessible and easier to get up and running with, and that won't be easy at all.

However, that, I think, is exactly the challenge that's needed.

Well done Artiphon!
