GarageBand app details:
GarageBand turns your iPad into a collection of Touch Instruments and a full-featured recording studio — so you can make music anywhere you go. Use Multi-Touch gestures to play pianos, organs, guitars, drums, and basses on your iPad. They sound and play like their counterparts, but let you do things you could never do on a real instrument. Enjoy a full range of Smart Instruments that make you sound like a pro — even if you’ve never played a note before. Plug an electric guitar into your iPad and play through classic amps and stompbox effects. Use the built-in microphone or a guitar to record, or capture any performance. Then mix up to eight tracks to create a song you can share.
Play your iPad like a musical instrument.
- Perform on dozens of musical instruments on the innovative Multi-Touch keyboard.
- Tap out beats from the seat of acoustic and electronic drum kits.
- Recreate legendary guitar rigs on your iPad with 9 amps and 10 stompbox effects.
- Record your voice using the built-in microphone, and apply fun sound effects.
- Use the Sampler to create an instrument from sounds you record, then play them on a keyboard.
- Tap chords to instantly create keyboard grooves with the Smart Keyboard.
- Strum chords on acoustic and electric Smart Guitars, or trigger fingerpicking patterns for popular chords.
- Groove with an onscreen electric or upright Smart Bass by tapping on chords.
- Drag drum instruments onto a grid to create your own beats with the Smart Drums.
- Arrange and mix your song with up to eight tracks using Touch Instruments, audio recordings, and loops.
- Trim and place musical regions exactly where you want them to play.
- Use the Mixer to fine-tune each track’s volume – solo or mute any track, or adjust pan, reverb, and echo.
- Use over 250 professionally prerecorded loops as a backing band to your song.
- Email songs right from your iPad (AAC).
- Export your song and add it to the iTunes library on your Mac or PC.
- Send a project to your Mac and open it in GarageBand to continue refining your song.
iPads at the Apple Store

If they throw in MIDI hardware support (line6 or coreMIDI if they can do it over wi-fi with minimal latency) and Audiocopy/paste (even if they have to "invent" their own standard ala AU plugins) I would get an iPad this year for sure.
The big question is does it work with the irig adapter. Anyone?
larryl... The ampkit interface works, same connection as the IRig, so it should work, have not had a chance to play much so can't speak for the quality of the recording..
Mr.A, GB does support coremidi!
I wonder if apple would consider using audio copy and paste?
I think my head would it explode if I could paste everything into gb and then edit nanostudio and bm2 sessions in gb on my Mac
Anonymous....thanks for the tip. Can't wait to try it.
No piano roll editing? How do I adjust anything to be on the beat? Re-record it?
@ Mark, you can't.... better pray for an update. I thought I was missing something too when I tried to find it. Even searched online for a manual. It's like they missed out on half the stuff so they could include it in a paid update.
This is what it's going to be like working in Apple's 'Safe 'n Fun' app.
Without copy/paste and resample it will be tough to make GB the dangerous app that Nanostudio already is....;-}
Darksound
Got GB a few hours ago. This has promise, but there are a few things that need serious work. For me, the gtr sounds were terrible compared to Amplitube.
For the love of all that is holy, please Apple, allow them to be a plug in !!!!!
Also, you can't play the gtr when the mix window is up.
There was a good 3 second lag time when switching between amp and mix window (will iPad2 be faster?)
The smart instruments were cool in that you could turn your brain off, bang away and get something decent sounding.
2 Stars, just because the gtr tones were lame. Come on Steve, put on some Mastodon and give me the rock !!!
Although lack of piano roll is very sad you can quantize your virtual instrument tracks AFTER you record a track, which is a start. Also that proves that the "note" data is editable and thus s piano roll would be fairly trivial to include at some point.
Hey everyone, head over to
http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1438
and post requests there. Hopefully some apple devs will listen.
No piano roll makes it kind of useless to me. Lack of automation, lack of effects (I'd hoped you would be able to use a stomp box as a channel effect) and lack of flexibility (e.g. No custom drum machines, lack of synth controls) also prevent it from being a serious competitor to something like NanoStudio in my eyes, so I don't think hard working devs have to worry for now (and it'll give the lazier ones a kick up the arse!).
That said, it looks beautiful, is fantastic fun to play and is nicely usable, so hopefully other apps will pick up some of its best features while retaining their flexibility. Just such a shame about the lack of piano roll for me!
May I just remind everyone that this app is $5.
Secondly Apple, with their team of devs is more than capable of creating GB with all the bells and whistles, but at that price point it would definitely killed of and discouraged most of third party devs and therefore killed of Apple store market - something Apple will never do.
Just finished this track w/ GB iPad. 3 software tracks and one guitar track (via iRig) by my illustrious bride, Iris.

It was surprisingly stable.
From my perspective, the app is worth $5 just for the smart drum instrument - it's a fantastic metronome alternative, since you can instantly generate random beats and adjust level/complexity of individual parts. Great for practicing your groove chops!
