Apple gets trademark for 'There's an app for that'

Mashable reports that Apple has been awarded a trademark for the phrase 'there's an app for that', which I guess makes sense as they coined it, but as the mobile world gains ground the word 'apps' is less platform specific I wonder how other stores and market places will differentiate themselves?

"Some software can do it."

I should get a trademark for that.

I don't think it will hold for long, just like "you've got mail" that AOL tried to trademark years ago, especially when guys like them http://theresanappforthat.com/ have been using it for quite some time..

I wonder if they Trademarked "Antenna Gate" too.

Probably just a defensive thing against people trademarking it before they do

Realize that Apple has numerous enforcement options for this phrase. They have contractual enforcement with any Apple vendor, any developer or affiliate and maybe even any end users (have you read the fine print?). They have copyright enforcement. And now they have registered trademark enforcement. That gives them a lot of legal muscle.

The only thing working against them is that trademarks must be enforced to be retained. And given the scale of the AppStore and the iPhone enforcement can get difficult. But knowing how the Apple Legal juggernaut works they just push through shutting down any IP violations in their path. I don't see any reason that will change.

(Oh yea. IANAL.)

@Anonymous

You didn't need to tell us you might not be a lawyer, just by reading your comment we would've guessed you're not a lawyer.

I think they will have a good time trying to enforce such a generic sentence.
