According to TUAW, 10 years ago the iPod changed music. Well I think it paved the way for a lot of changes in many areas, so happy 10th anniversary iPod.
I still have mine ... can't keep a charge but it works as long as it's plugged into power. I have the old speaker set that it docks into that will keep it charged and playing.
Anyone here remember when music purchased on the itunes store only worked with ipods and not on other mp3 players? Can you imagine Sony making a music cd that works only with Sony's cd players and get away with it?
This is Apple's true power, they can do stuff that people would not accept from other companies.
Apple's DRM system was all " agreed " upon by the big record/media co.s . Of course apple did not invent the mp3 or mp3 player .... What they did do was make it a household name and paved the way for how we consume digital media to this day . Otherwise it would have been a fad and faded out to a degree . What the did was to make it a sustainable business . Before the the iPod and iTunes there was no real sucusseful digital music delivery that was both - legit and sustainable in a real way .They were the first to get the big boys to sit at the table .
But hey go ahead and bash by all means . I know how trendy it is to hate on apple . So go do it be trendy .
"Apple's DRM system was all " agreed " upon by the big record/media"
Yes, DRM itself was agreed by the Big Record companies, but it was not supposed to be a form of DRM that would work only with Apple's devices.
What Apple really did is take a risk selling mp3 players in an era where other big companies like Sony didn't care at all about mp3 players. Apple showed them it would be the future.
"Before the the iPod and iTunes there was no real sucusseful digital music delivery that was both - legit and sustainable in a real way"
Mostly because the RIAA would crack down on anyone that would try to sell music online at the time. The RIAA wanted way to much money, and Apple were the first ones strong enough to oppose them. I remember Steve Jobs saying to the RIAA "a song will sell for 1$, not any more"
"I know how trendy it is to hate on apple"
People love rooting for the underdog, do you remember when all the hate was directed towards Microsoft? Apple is not the underdog anymore.
Did anyone here claim that Apple invented the iPod? Arguments against nobody are awesome. Also awesome that apparently it's assumed that you should be against a company just because they are large.
Sony? Remember when they actually did make CDs that were incompatible with many CD players? Any evil in the music industry comes directly from the major labels. Apple hasn't done any damage to the industry, they just found a way to be successful.
"Apple stole nothing from Creative and was never forced to compensate them, what nonsense!"
The firm (Creative Labs) took legal actions against Apple in May 2006. In August, 2006, Creative and Apple entered into a broad settlement, with Apple paying Creative $100 million for the license to use the Zen patent.

"Sony? Remember when they actually did make CDs that were incompatible with many CD players?"
Yes absolutely, that's exactly what I meant, when a corporation like Sony does this kind of thing they don't get away with it. That product failed hard because of the incompatibility, and the mini-disc suffered the same fate for similar reasons.
Sony didn't get away with it either when they sold rootkit infected music cd that would corrupt computers when people would try to listen to this cd on their computer. Sony got sued massively, lost and had to compensate all those users.
You must also be aware how the Playstation have been ripped of features since Sony released it. They removed PS2 games compatibility, the ability to install another OS, and plenty of other features, and they are hated for that.
But it was ok when Apple sold music that only worked on their devices, and they are revered for that.
Sony in fact owned some of the patents on CD disc design and there for I can only assume made a few bucks licensing that tech so you can go buy that disc player . What you are bitching and crying about is iTunes not the iPad ...the iPad could play anything you downloaded from anywhere as long as it was in your itunes collection . And hey if you are in fact using iTunes then you probably have an iPod to play the music on ? Otherwise why would you bother . No what you are in fact bitching about is the fact you could not steal and share with an iPod so easily ...there for making all your arguments irrelevant .
Dude we get it ! Apple gets praise and you get all but hurt over it . Ok I want to publicly apologize for Apple ever doing anything successful . Becuase my grandmother who can't operate a 386 running Win95 , but can surf , do e-mails , play games and rent movies through ip in a way that she understands it on her iPad . I concede that apple must be far to " popular " and no longer for the cool kids and there for must have an assine lash out for every single move they make from here on out !

Mp3 players changed music, the ipod was just a very succesful model, which Apple stole from Creative and was later forced to compensate them.
Apple did not invent the mp3 player.

blah, blah, blah, boo-hoo
"blah, blah, blah, boo-hoo"
Yes, I agree with you, Apple did not invent the mp3 player.
MPman and Diamond Rio 14 years old today.
Apple as always was late to the game, but were incredibly succesful, so much that most people believes they invented everything.

anon fights are really hard to follow, we never know who's replying what to whom.
"No what you are in fact bitching about is the fact you could not steal and share with an iPod so easily"
No it has nothing to do with piracy, it had to do with the fact that you couldn't use any other brand of mp3 player with itunes at the time.
Equating that to piracy is just silly.
I love my iPod.

@ananon: no, it's not hard to follow, it's like a football game, pick a team and enjoy the show :)
