Another book for your Christmas stocking today. I got this last year and it is a great resource for getting going with an Arduino.

Mixtikl 2 in less than a week

With less than a week to go until Mixtikl V2 from Intermorphic is launched I thought I'd remind you of a few of the tracks that I made with V1 which are on my MySpace page.

Tomorrow I plan to try out RC1 on my Axim and when I do I'll let you know how it performs.

Pacemaker is changing tomorrow

Here's what I got from them:
Tomorrow Pacemaker.net will be down a couple of hours, here is why ...

When Pacemaker.net launched a year and a half ago, it was a community where Pacemaker device users could share their mixes. Since then, it has grown into what's looking more and more like an embryo to a sort of YouTube for music mixes. A place where users listen to or upload, store and share mixes - or use as a platform when embedding mixes on their blogs, MySpace or Facebook pages.

Most of our users today don't have a Pacemaker. A lot of them use the Pacemaker editor, but more and more are just dj:s or music lovers who want to share their mixes with others and choose to do so on Pacemaker.net because of the functionality the site and the player offers.

This led to a realisation: We were growing out of our costume. So, a couple of months ago, we started building a new web application. The guidelines were simple:

Make the experience of finding and listening to mixes more streamlined.
Create a more intuitive user experience, where the process of uploading, sharing and embedding mixes is smoother.
Allow for users to interact more deeply around mixes - discussing them, tracking their own or other mixes, sharing them quicker and easier.
Simply, we wanted a web app that's all about mixing music.

To make that point, we're calling the new site Let's mix. It will go live in Beta tomorrow. Let's mix contains all the music, data and functionality that's currently on Pacemaker, but in a more user friendly environment. And our free mix software, the Editor, is there in an updated version too.

We hope you will help us with feedback in the upcoming months during Beta, and if any inconveniences occur have some extra patience with us during this period.

Going down the web app route is a bold move. I had thought they might go mobile, but perhaps the likes of Touch DJ and Sonorasaurus etc have put them off.

I guess tomorrow we'll se what they've come up with.

ioLibrary in danger?

This post at the PatternMusic blog seems to suggest that Apple might be withdrawing support for access to the DCIM backdoor for file exchange.

That would be a very bad thing for ioLibrary which makes use of that route for audio exchange. I wouldn't be too surprised if Apple did do this, as it does break their rules. However, it will make life very difficult for a number of developers and lots of users who have become very used to using ioLibrary for making music.

FastBasic 1.4 beta

The latest version of FastBasic for Palm includes the following:
  • The GUI-command "DIA" has been added, so people with devices like T5, T|X ... can control the Dynamic Input Area
  • In devices like T|X it was not possible before to stop the program (in uncompiled mode) because the "Home" button did not exist. Now you can choose a hardkey to stop the program: you need to go to "Global Preferences" and set it.
  • Some other preferences have been added. For example, you can choose if the commented lines have to be indented or not
  • The command OPEN FORM has been modified in its syntax, but it still works as before (I haven't had enough time to complete it) This is the only reason why this is a "beta" version.

I'm just glad to see that software like this is being kept going. When I get some time I'll do a bit more with this, but so far I just haven't had time to get into it properly.

Has mobile music made life more difficult?

I've found that these days making music using desktop systems (Logic, Ableton etc) is not as easy as it used to be, and I think it is down to the number of mobile applications that I use and have got used to over the years. I think partly it is the immediacy of mobile music that I love, and the fact that there are very few laptop / desktop applications that offer me the same kind of immediate satisfaction.

Do you think that mobile music has made creating music with desktops / laptops more difficult for you? Or is it just me?

24 Apps of 2009: Mujik

Mujik is one of those apps I can really get lost in. You can just play with it for ages and ages. There's a great video of the developer (The Amazing Rolo) talking about his thoughts on musical interface design, and in many ways I agree with his ideas. I still like more conventional interfaces too though.

One of the great things about Mujik is it is so accessible to anyone irrespective of their musical ability, and in my view mobile devices should be able to open up creative opportunities to people of all artistic ability. Mujik does just that.

I hope that they continue to develop it and make other apps with equally as interesting and innovative interfaces.

Please, bring back the PDA

When I started making music on handhelds most devices were PDAs, and very few were smartphones. People talked about devices converging, and that is pretty much what has happened, but in many ways I don't think it has been a good thing.

My first devices were Palm OS devices and then I found out about PocketPC and so I bought an HP Jornada 568 to run Griff and Syntrax. When Apple released the iPhone I was able to buy an iPod Touch. However, now if I want to try a new platform (like Android), things are not so simple.

Moving mobile phones is a lot more difficult than just going out to purchase a new PDA, and because of that I think more device manufacturers should consider PDA or non-phone versions like the Touch. It would make it so much easier to sample an OS and see if it was something you wanted to persist with.

So, if anyone is listening out there. PLEASE BRING BACK THE PDA!

Access releases Beta 5 of Garnet VM

Brighthand posts on Beta 5 of the Garnet VM from Access, which is compatible with Maemo Linux OS2006, OS2007, and OS2008, which means it runs on the Nokia N810, N800, and 770 Internet Tablets.

However, it is not compatible with the latest version of the Maemo OS, which is available on the Nokia N900 smartphone, which is interesting. I wonder if Access will continue the Garnet VM and finally get it out of beta?

What other creative stuff do you do with your iPhone?

Or indeed any other kind of handheld or PDA? I tend to cover music with a bit of art, video and writing, but I know there must be loads of other creative stuff you could do with your handheld, so anyone got anything else aside from those categories that they do or make with their iPhone / handheld / smartphone etc?

I'd love to know

24 Apps of 2009: Toro Mini

Toro Mini is the first in my December series of 24 apps that I've really enjoyed this year. Toro Mini is a great little synth that has some nice features and a bunch of sounds that can outplay a few other more expensive synth apps.

One of my favourite features in Toro Mini is 'sticky keys' which is brilliant.

I like the app a lot because it is an application you can get straight into without knowing what to do or reading a guide or watching a video or anything, it is completely immediate and loads of fun to try out.

If you haven't tried it and are considering it, then it is really worth the £0.59 ($0.99), and it you want you can always check out Toro Core which is the little brother.

I hope that InstantBinary bring out a Toro Max with loads of extra features, but we'll have to wait and see.

When software vanishes

When I was writing the post yesterday on software for older Palm units I realised that there were a bunch of applications that I simply can't trace anymore. It is a shame, but understandable.

So I was wondering what appetite there was for a sort of museum of old software applications irrespective of platform that could serve as a way of finding old apps that have vanished off the internet.

Also, if you have any old software that is no longer available anywhere else and you'd like it preserved (for as long I can keep it going that is), then get in touch.

Christmas Presents for the Mobile Musician: Day 1

If I didn't already have this I would definitely have it on my Christmas list. A great book, and excellent DVD with it too.

I keep meaning to write some stuff about how good this book is and what an excellent introduction it is to making your own musical hardware. Perhaps I'll get to that in the new year.

Anyway, if you're looking for a present for someone interested in mobile music or circuit bending then you could do a lot worse and it isn't too expensive either.

And don't forget he's playing in the UK in January.

I can't believe it is December already!

Where did the year go? December is here and sooner than you know it Christmas will be here too.

So, to help with all your mobile music Christmas shopping needs I thought I'd run a series of posts in the run up to Christmas of a bunch of cool stuff you'd want to find in your stocking on Christmas morning.

As if that wasn't enough I'll be running through my 24 iPhone apps of 2009, and I'll throw in a couple of reader polls on the way including the Palm Sounds most innovative application of 2009.

So, here we go with all sorts of festive stuff!
