Some thoughts about iMASCHINE

I was thinking about NI's announcement yesterday about iMASCHINE and considering what it means for mobile in general. First off I'm really glad to see the announcement, that's for sure. It's great to see another big development studio get into mobile. But there are a few other points to consider as well.

Firstly, the announcement came alongside a much more mobile version of the hardware, MASCHINE Mikro. That in itself signals a move to a more portable environment whilst continuing the coupling of hardware and software.

Secondly, the mobile app suggests a degree of integration with the desktop and hardware versions. NI say on their iMASCHINE page:

And when you’re done, you can finalize your track in the full version of MASCHINE or MASCHINE MIKRO or directly upload it to SoundCloud and share with your friends.

Thirdly, and possibly most tenuously, the same page starts with:

The first ever Native Instruments iPhone® and iPod touch® App

It might be nothing, but to me, saying that it is the 'first' suggests they may have other apps planned or even in the wings waiting to see how iMASCHINE is received.

Of course, I hope they do more, much more, but we'll have to see how the community received iMASCHINE first and then see what they do with it.

Irrespective, it's great to see NI join the party, and I hope it makes other big developers sit up and pay more attention to mobile.

Great opportunity missed I'm afraid... No iPad version with CoreMidi support - what a shame.
The only reason I can think of for NI not releasing fully featured iPad native iMachine is that it would rival similarly sized hardware and therefore canibalize the sales of the “real” thing. As it is, this app is totally useless for my needs.

I think you've got a very good point there. NI have always been a company driven by the market. I remember what a kerfuffle there was when thousands of people tried to get NI to port Reaktor to the Mac. (It took an awful lot of persuasion). They're in it for the money!

That's fine by me. I agree with Ashley. The more the merrier. :) As long as the integrity of the iPad interface is maintained, who really cares? I just hope that developers continue to try to innovate. (I hardly call Machine though, innovative, it's just a rehash of all those other workstation ideas that Intua started with Beatmaker 1)

Good luck to them, but I won't be buying it as I don't need another app like this. I don't see the point of them releasing apps if they are going to be poor copies of what is already available on this platform. Their VST/AU stuff is the 'muts nuts', but why are people excited by them getting into iOS? If this if their first venture into it, and they're in it for the cash, and are also unresponsive or unreceptive, I can't see them making many new customers or cash. Pro's will think it's a toy, and amateurs will already have at least one app like this that was cheaper, with better features. iOS apps are incredible value for money, but I'm not in the habit of wasting money just because it's got a respected name attached to it. Some apps demand features like core midi etc. and this is one of them. Presumably they did some research into this Market, and if this is what they came up with, it's very disappointing. You only get one chance to make a good first impression.

It is pretty simple. I have BeatMaker2, NanoStudio, iSequence, etc. And I use each of them for different things. Everyone works differently and even though BeatMaker2 can already do what the iMachine plus much more, The iMachine might just "click" for some people. It would be idiotic to not make something because something like it already exists. It would be like there are already red four-door cars available, so lets not make anything like a red four-door car....

I'm afraid the big companies are simply attempting to use the iOS arena as advertising space for their conventional products: apps like imaschine and figure are aimed at dragging iOS musicians back to their computers. They are, at present, next to useless to serious iOS music makers
