iPhone App Directory

So, what apps would you like to see?

I'm sure I've done this before, but the last day or so I've seen lots of comments like 'I'd love to see an iCZ from Casio' and 'why don't NI bring iFM' etc, so I thought I'd post an open question asking what apps you'd like to see on iOS or Android, or indeed on any other platform for that matter.

Jasuto Studio! ;)

Actually I think we're doing pretty good already. I just think that developers need to break this silly obsession with this saw, sine, square thing. Christ guys, we have these amazing little handheld computers and all you want to do is simulate boring old analogue synths!?

Addictive Synth makers Virsyn are the ones to watch as far as I'm concerned. I think they really know where it's at. :)

protools for ipad and reason for ipad. i used to run protools powermix (16 tracks with automation, but no rtas) on a 333mhz powerbook g3 with a 6Gb (yes, 6) hard drive so it should be possible on an ipad. meteor and multitrack daw are pretty good, but they're a bit clunky compared to tools.

Definitely VSThost or the simpler SAVIhost from Hermann Seib. Apps are plugins running in stand-alone mode, enabling apps to run alongside VST's in a modular environment would be great.

Traktor lol

Seriously...probably Renoise.

Also an app thats gonna compliment the virtual midi stuff. So yeah a D.A.W that will work with the virtual midi and works with all docks/midi interfaces etc.

Reaktor Player

Reaktor and Reason.

Reaktor Player would be nice but only if you could load your own ensembles.

And while I'm fantasizing. PD built into NanoStudio (a la max for live).

QuadraSID or Ohm Force. Or both! I'm not fussy; lol.

Less synths and more instruments like Thumbjam that emulate traditional instruments. Between NLog and Sunrizer, synths are the last thing I wanna see in new apps.

A standard that would allow apps that lack recording functions to record to multitrack apps. Like if App A doesn't have a record function, or even if it does, it would be cool to go into Multitrack DAW or FourTrack and select the input of a track as App A.

Korg Polysix would be awesome, or Arp 2600

Reaktor and plain vanilla Pd (well.. RJDJ is nice too, I know)

Audiomulch

CoolEdit 1.0 (or equiv) with good sample library management.

I'd like to see Moog get some more apps going.

I watched a few YT vids on the MoogerFooger pedals. It would be great to have that series added to iOS like the filtatron. Build a modular setup using iPods and apps and irigs.

I would also like to see more apps like Sunrizer come about. Korg did a great job on their legacy series and I'd think that would translate well to the iPad. I bet Beep Street could continue his reign as premier synth app builder if he keeps the same designs going and just models every great synth he can. Korg/beep street combo could make for some powerful 'retro synth' action.

Aurturia also make some great soft synths and that would he a great developer to see break into the scene as well.

A. I love the synthesizers we've been getting, but I too would like to see more emulation of traditional instruments.

B. Korg Kaossilator. I love the sounds and the portability, but porting it to iOS would open up five things:

1. Apple's glass screen has a more uniform response than Korg's touchpad.

2. Much longer loops.

3. You could add effects.

4. An iPhone/iPod version would be even more pocketable.

5. With a screen underneath the interface, you could see the note you're playing. (I have a plastic overlay that does this on mine, but it doesn't work for all scales.)

Porridge. I want an app that makes porridge!

Korg kaossilator and kaoss pad on the same screen, for iPad, hopefully they'll do this eventually

Funny how a majority of those are suggestions to convert some VST's to an app. Why not give us a VST host?

A simple ACP file bank app rather than only being able to access it within app.

Also a vocal bank app with voice manipulation if you want to add vocal samples at present there is not a lot of choice within the current DAW apps otherwise it's DIY with vocalive.

TX81z sim
Kaossilator
Virtual analog modelled X0X drum boxes
SH101
Minimoog

Don't care if this list is "boring" or "cliched" as I am old and only make music for my own fun.

I like original ideas!
I'm not really waiting for complete DAWs, modular environments or whatever, squeezed into an app.
My computer is still working ;)

A mobile daw or nanostudio update that will export desktop based daw project files (logic, pro tools, cubase) for further tweaks and proper leveling at home.

Or a sync'ing system between mobile and desktop counterparts of the same DAW... So work could be progressive at home and/or on the road. ... Similar to GarageBand or fruity loops theory, but with a DAW you can really work with.

A few things I'd like to see, first would be emulations of classic rack gear. Starting with samplers, emu e4's, e5000 or e6400 with those beastly z-plane filters, akai s950 or s1000 for nostalgia sake and z8 for experimentation. Yamaha a3-4-5000 would be nice too as i've had fun with them.

Next would be classic digi synths that were a pain to program with limited screens and many layers of menu's, ipad's touch control could open these up to a nu gen and make old timers like myself smile with the ease of usage. First my first proper digi synth the kurzweil k2000r, had a learning curve that was a vertical line but after my nitemares had past and I got use to it, was sonically mind-blowing, I need to use it more, but the processing power and system memory is puny compaired to ipad standards.

Korg wave station sr is another fiddley to program impressive results kind of deal, ipad could breath new life into it if designed to take advantage of the touchscreen. Roland jd800 wink, wink sunrizer peeps, I bought a clunky second hand one a few years back, was going to get this instead of the k2000r way back when, is beautiful to work with as the controls are mainly all hands on, fantastic sounds. Korg m1 too would be cool if they updated the control system, classic pad sounds. One of my fav synths I didn't own but played with, oberheim ob8, stuff of dreams, love an iOS version.

I agree with tom tm about seeing what nu things people come up with using the touchscreen in new ways, as it has more possibilities than sliders, knobs and tiny menu's, altho I love the tactile control of sliders and knobs. Konkreet performa has come up with some inspiring solutions, also sample wizz and addictive synth, also love the randomise button in sunrizer and grain bender, for quick experimentation.

One last thing I'd wet my pants over is the eventide effects processors coming to ios, pipe dream I know, but one of the most inspiring line of effects for me, would go nice with the io dock:)

I'd really like to see Propellerheads step up and deliver some version of Reason. The ReBirth app is really nice and works well on the iPad. While I don't think that they could port the power of Reason 6 onto an iPad (at least not yet!), they certainly could give us something to start with.

I mentioned this on another post, but I really need a high quality music notation app. I honestly can't believe that Finale or Sibelius haven't appeared yet. Symphony Pro is great, but after dedicating so many years to Finale, I would quickly throw down the money to check out a Finale iPad app.

Time will tell . . .

Everything that you guys suggested already exists in plugin form and could be loaded in VSThost or SAVIhost easily if such a thing was available in IOS.

People who prefers only running one app/vst could, and the other people who wants a modular/daw experience could too.

The best of both world.

I'd be very happy if Garageband for ipad could load apps/vst/au as plugins..

... or in Tabletop? Imagine how cool it would be to load any plugin in Tabletop and not just the included modules :)

"Everything that you guys suggested already exists in plugin form and could be loaded in VSThost or SAVIhost easily if such a thing was available in IOS."

Except for the fact that many apps have nice useful interfaces, and generally all VSTs have sucky interfaces. Even VSTs that have some thought behind their interface are still optimized for keyboard and mouse operation. IMO, a host for generic VSTs would be a step backward for the IOS platform.

@Scott W
"generally all VSTs have sucky interfaces."

Wow, you clearly haven't used a lot of VSTs,.. and the one you played with were probably crap. I play with VST's on a touchscreen everyday (Mimo), and what you just said is just not true. Try it if you don't believe me.

And could you please explain to me how having the option to run VST's (or AU's) would be worse than not having any options at all? I really wonder why it would be so bad to let someone release an app that would run plugins.

Now for a quick comparison?

I would find it really funny if you would try to convince me that its impossible to operate something like the first screenshot in IOS, because I'm using it at this very moment, and it works very well.

+1 for audiomulch too

apple doesnt sell au/vst in the mac appstore.
so before we'll see them there, there wont be any on ios.
dont need to be einstein to figure that out.

besides im not sure if the old host/plugin thing is the right way to do music on ios.

Anonymous said...

apps are plugins, IOS is the host, but it doesn't support standards such as vst or au, and it would be very nice if it would, or if Apple would allow a dev to create an app that can host them.

Its just as simple as that.

Being against that is ilke being against having choices. You don't like it don't use it, but please don't stop people from developing it.

Those of you asking for a Kaossilator + Kaosspad combo need to go get iMS-20! it is everything you want and more!

I'm still waiting for FM on iPad(multi-waveform, not just sines like DXi). I would love an iFM8 app, but if it is remotely feasable to get a Reaktor Player (with user ensembles) then I'd prefer NI worked on that.

hm, ios is for mobile devices, so we have limited resources,
its not big i on or below your desktop,
i dont see the need for the hostapp thing,
maybe apple figures out something nice for audiorouting,
and then we dont have the update your os update your hostapp update your plugin stuff again,
just lots of lttle standalone apps that talk to each other :)
> update os , maybe update apps, thats one thing less to update!

lala said...

and to wait for updates for ...

Anonymous said...

"hm, ios is for mobile devices, so we have limited resources,"

IOS devices are more powerful than 10 years old pentium3 computer which could handle plugins and DAW very well at the time. IOS has all the necessary resources to handle software like Reason or Cubase.

"i dont see the need for the hostapp thing,"

I see the need for an hostapp thing, and I am not the only one. Why are you against having options? Why do you believe it would be a bad thing if Nanostudio or Beatmaker could handle plugins?

What is so bad in having an app that could handle VSTs and AUs? Just don't use it if you don't need it, but don't try to convince me that I don't want it.

Do not waste time trying to convince an Apple fanatic that he could have something that Apple has not yet told him he needed.

"why do the same thing we do on a laptop?"

Because it works great?

"btw. reason doesnt host anything"

Exactly, but I mentionned Reason because people here seems to want it a lot on IOS.. and also because.. REASON IS ALSO A PLUGIN :D

"and im sick of hosts whitch keep crashing on plugins!!!"

You should stop using crappy hosts, mine never crashes.

All that and you never answered my most important question : why are you against choice?
