The TNR-i arrives from Yamaha. A lot cheaper than an actual Tenori-on, but pricey for an app. The collaboration over network features look pretty good though. Well worth taking a look.
Whoops, guess I should have sold my hardware Tenori-On last week! Also looks like it's back to the drawing board with my next app... ;)
Some info here on Sweden's Yamaha site: http://se.yamaha.com/sv/products/musical-instruments/entertainment/tenori-on/tnr-i/?mode=model
It appears to allow import of songs from the hardware version, works with both iPad and iPhone, and allows you to use GameCenter to make music with other people over a network.
Doesn't say anything about supporting MIDI but one of the tabs has a link to their upcoming hardware CoreMIDI interface, so you'd think it would?
I'm waiting for it to pop up in the US store so I can grab it.
The good news is that during the port to iOS they've fixed one or two issues with the UI...namely, if you clear the Random mode you can go back in and re-program the steps - on the hardware OS you can't...until you switch on/off again!
The other interesting thing is that if you own a hardware TNR, then the new version of the firmware (2.1) promises that you can not only use it in conjunction with the app, but also with a PC - you need to check the videos on their official page...I'm hoping the firmware also fixes the same bug mentioned!
Would be interesting to see how this fares in comparison to Aurora HD.
Nice! I can't wait for it to come to the US. I have the orange tenori'on, which unfortunately does not run on batteries, so this will be a nice addition.
Does anyone know if you can add more than 3 sample instruments at a time in the iOS version? Or if there is any voice editing (I doubt it)? These things would be difficult to add the the hardware without expanding it's capabilities, but easy to do on an iPad.
Dj Hombre, what do you mean with re-program the steps in random mode in relation to the hardware version and having to switch on/off. Never use the random mode so.......
In random mode, you string a bunch of positions together, they play in that order...you can also spin the positions around the central point clockwise or anti-clockwise which means you get a whole bunch of different notes played - you can get some quite interesting sounds like this. In the hardware version, if you hit Clear all the points do get cleared, but you can't punch any new ones in...the layer is blank until you switch the unit off then on again.
In the iOS version there's currently no User1/2/3 voices - those 3 points in the voice selection (bottom right) are left empty...I guess this might come in time?
Still no sign of the new firmware (v2.1) download on any of the Yamaha sites though.
Also, the new iMX1 MIDI connector for iPhone & iPad should now be available with this flurry of apps from Yamaha...although where from and at what cost is another question!
Seems there is a new firmware update for the Tenori-On to accommodate this
http://tenorion.exblog.jp/
Can't find it on the English language sites as yet so can only scan the Japanese manual. Looks like you can link two T-Os or a T-O to TNR-i. Or make group compositions over Game Centre(!) Firmware changes seem mostly new sysex stuff to facilitate that. Plus the ability to save FX settings to song files.
YES, it does support midi out and Midi In ext sync. it supports both network midi (wifi) and also CCK. it sends out on all 16 midi channels too. how cool is this thing!!!!
@DJ Hombre: The firmware is available from links on http://tenorion.exblog.jp. Haven't installed it yet, so I don't know if it changes that Random mode behaviour. From your description of the app, it must have. (The app is not available here yet, but I don't have the h/w to try it anyway.)
Btw, the Random mode problem on the T-O itself can be fixed by stopping rotation after clearing that layer. You don't have to power off and on to enter notes again. It was a bug that was sort of a feature: it allowed a Draw/Solo kind of thing to happen on the Random layer (you can't enter active notes, but you can play notes.)
I didn't use it often in that state--once as an xy-controller as an experiment--but I'll be sad to see it "corrected" anyway. Remote control of the Tenori-On with the new firmware will more than make up for it, however.
@DJ Hombre: I take it back - pressing Clear in a Random layer should clear both the active notes and rotation, so that would be a bug fix. Nothing prevents me from setting up rotation before any active notes are entered, thus restoring the Draw/Solo mode state, without hobbling the Clear function.
"Game Center" functionality seems broken. I get a message that says "This game is not recognized by Game Center" every time I launch the app. WiFi / 3G.... any which way.
Wrt the firmare update: Remote control of the h/w, via computer anyway, seems to terminate with the Tenori-On. That is, MIDI like note on, prog or control change, no longer transmitted while TO h/w is in Remote Mode. Only the remote mode sysex commands are transmitted. Also, functions that are not accessible remotely are also not accessible from the TO menu while in Remote Mode (e.g. loading blocks, recording songs.)
I'm sure nobody cares (except maybe DJ Hombre), but I'm flip-flopping again on Random-no-notes-but-in-rotation being a bug. It is not!
I might well want to clear notes from one block's Random layer, but leave rotation *on* in another block's Random Layer (that still has active notes.) If Clear shut off rotation for a Random layer, it would do so on that layer in all blocks, which is clearly not a desirable result.
So just shut off rotation holding L4 and pressing an LED twice (or holding an LED.) You don't have to power down.

You do know that Korg are owned by Yamaha?
I expect to see a lot from these companies coming out for iDevices.
Great news indeed. And as for the price... that's reasonable!
Burning question.
Does it core midi cck in and out with clock sync and midi pattern changing
Not in Australian store...
Not in U.S. store :(
As soon as I've mustered the courage to spend £12 on an app I'll be getting this!

If you search "Yamaha Corporation" they released a few other CoreMIDI apps today: keyboard/arp, fader, editors.
Still no Tenori-On app in the US store though.

looks good but
with small letter they wrote:
"no user voices support"
so we cant use our samples :(
damn :(

The Tenori-On app still hasn't shown up in the US, but weirder is the fact they yanked the other 3 MIDI apps they had released earlier today.
They all still show up in the Japan store.
not in the canadian store yet
