Gakken SX150 in the Maker Shed

I've heard lots of people say that this is a fun little synth and very easy to make so I thought I'd post this link to Make where you can get one and find out more too.

I've got 3 SX-150's and a Monotron, and the Tron wins hands down every time. Not that I'm saying that the SX sounds bad, it doesn't, it's just that the Tron is really well designed, whereas the SX is pretty bland.

They're a bit akin to comparing a Jen SX2000 to an SX1000, where the latter is far superior. :)

I'd agree with all of that. I don't think I've touched my SX-150 since getting the 'Tron. Especially when the Gakken is so fussy about external input whereas the Tron pretty much eats anything you put in front of it. In a good way.

The Gakken is a very easy make - Kinder egg toy easy. But the 'Tron is much better value.

@Tom

I agree too, the Monotron is much more fun than the SX-150. I think its mostly because of the filters that are really great on the Monotron, and really not that great on the Gakken :)

Another, probably even more valid reason not to go with the Gakken, is that they now cost stupid money, probably because sellers in Japan realised that there was an international market for them. Originally I bought 2 SX's for just under £30, now you'll be lucky if you get one for £50 each!

You can get a Monotron now for £40.

And they look much nicer too!

I have one and I did a tutorial on how to control it via MIDI/Arduino in here:

It is a pretty fun little synth.
