Further thoughts on iCloud for mobile music

Just thinking about how iCloud could be used by mobile music developers and their apps. Here are a couple of things that have come to mind:
  • MIDI. My assumption is that an app might be able to save a MIDI file into the cloud that another app with MIDI capability would then be able to open, on the same or different device?
  • Following on from that, if apps had the same file format or could save into a common format then that could get around the current problems in iOS.
These are of course just some initial thoughts and developers will need to take a look at the iCloud storage APIs to see what's possible, but I'm keen to hear from any devs as to the potential for this kind of thing.

The hope for me has to be a single copy of each file accessible to each app. I doubt it will happen. Probably at best we could hope for apps to be able to shift a copy of the audio/MIDI file into their own "area" but thus end up with duplicate files. Much like we have with pasteboard really.

Perhaps we will get one app that becomes the file management app, and others will be able to access its data.

However it works, I like the idea of the cloud stuff. It's like an easier way of doing what we've been doing for years. More recently I've been using services like Dropbox a lot. May sound odd, but my VST collection resides in my Dropbox folder so adding a VST on one PC makes it appear on my laptop and tablet too. Likewise my Ableton library lives on Dropbox.

A concern is data storage. Sure I like the idea of "seamless syncing" but how does that work with my 8Gb iPod Touch, 16Gb iPhone and 32Gb iPad whic are all used in different ways? Clearly there's a lot more stuff (apps and data) on the larger devices. Maybe you'll be able to choose what gets synced?

It will be nice to have the ability to have the latest version on all my i-devices at the same time.

I have been keen on soundcloud. You can upload and download right from soundcloud but it would be great if the soundcloud app put more emphasis on the exchanging of sounds from app to app. Right now the music is there but it is up to each individual developer to put the option in their apps. If the industry can band together and create the copy/paste standard(even if it's 3 different ones) it would be great for all these great minds to come together and work out a single app or file structure that could hold all the audio we use for our music production apps.

It would be great for a good developer to create an app similar to reforge but instead of focusing on editing focus more on keeping a library or stockpile. That way the app will hold all your sound files be it midi wav aiff ect. Then we could just go to that one app and copy out of it. Then every time you create a good riff or bass line/drumbeat just hit copy to- send it to the app I'm talking about then there we go. A central storage of sound files. Expand this even further by adding dropbox, soundcloud, and the upcoming cloud to this 'app' and you have a way to send files anywhere and every where. This already can be done by using many apps I suppose but I am hoping to have one app to rule them all. Just a thought.
