Not sure why Apple would add this feature. I would have thought it would better to add a more powerful camera than the one they did, but I guess vibrate could be useful(-ish).

Its real usefull to people who have Hearing & Vision loss. I've read a few complaints from iPad users on this matter, So I can see why it in their and its most likely going to be in the iPad 2.

Makes sense now
The slightly more obvious reason (to me) is that they included it because you can now receive FaceTime calls on the iPod Touch, so it will ring like a phone and would also have the vibrating alert for incoming calls.
