Where's the next big app coming from?

Whilst this year has been great for really good app updates and developers getting their apps working together there haven't been the really big new apps that we saw last year. I wonder if developers are working away on iPad apps for next month, and without a doubt that'll be an interesting time to see what innovations come out, but I'm also keen to see where the next big iPhone app will come from and what it will be.

I do wonder if the iPad will harm innovation on the iPhone though. What do you think?

I'm absolutely sure developers will do something to the iPhone what we in germany would call "dropping it like a hot potato"... it has been like this for every device in history, when something new and shiny is about to be released...

I don't think it will harm iPhone development, we may just see more and more apps that are more feature packed on the ipad. " if you like this app on the iPhone, try the supersized version for the ipad!"

sales of the ipad and its apps will ultimately dictate what happens to iphone apps imo

The iPad will get a lot of publicity which makes it very attractive to iPhone developers, but the market (insomuch as there is one) will remain on the iPhone/iPod touch.

We are coming up on 100 million iPhones and iPod touches.

The iPad is an unproven new product that may or may not do well. But even the best estimates put it at 4M by the end of the year. That's much more of a niche.

No way are devs gonna drop the iPhone. It's not like everyone with an iPhone is gonna trash it for the Pad...who knows how big a success it will even be.

Furthermore, I bet if devs were gonna drop the iPhone, they would've already done so for Android.

Some really good points here. Yep, 4m iPads by the end of 2010 isn't much against 100m iPhones/Touches, and yes, devs could go to Android but haven't as yet.

It'll be interesting to see what the next version of the iPhone will bring for devs, and if Windows Phone 7 makes a dent in the iPhone economy

I'm also interested to see what kind of mobiles come out in the future that don't function as phones and just things like android app players. Similar to iPod touch
