Brighthand has this piece on Microsoft confirming that there will be no backward compatibility for their new mobile OS. However, they will continue to support Windows Mobile 6.5 for some time to come. I'm guessing I'm out of luck with WinMo 5 already!
I'd be really interested to hear from users and developers of windows mobile to see what your reactions are to this.

I think jettisoning backward compatibility and legacy support was the whole point of WP7, and it was probably Microsoft's only hope at this point.
Not that I had any intention of going back to WinMo this kills it off for me completely
