KORG Gadget for iPad Remix Contest announced

Korg just don't seem to let up at all these days. Now they've announced the KORG Gadget for iPad Remix Contest, which runs from the 28th until the 31st.

And my app of the week is ...

This week it's Effectrix. I've had so much fun with this app alongside SeekBeats, it's awesome. The amount of control is staggering. I can see myself using this a lot, in fact probably too much.

Anyway, this app has far exceeded my expectations and I'm loving it.

I still think that the Ara modular phone could be a great thing for mobile music

This is an interesting piece of what Google is planning with the Ara project and some elements of it are really quite radical, or at least I think so.

When I first posted about this, when it was just Phonebloks (I think that was the name anyway) I didn't get a terribly good response. However, I think that a modular device could work really well for mobile music. The only proviso (and it's a big one) is that there are the right kind of modules available to put in the device, and/or third parties have the ability to produce modules for the Ara project.

So I'll be keeping an eye on this and letting you know about it from time to time.

MultitrackStudio for iPad update

MultitrackStudio for iPad gets an update. Here's what's new:
  • MultitrackStudio Instruments: synths have Cutoff knob, some instruments have button to disable built-in guitar amp simulators etc., so you can add you own instead.
  • Transport counter: swipe left to fully rewind, swipe right to return to most recent start position.
  • Editors: Position thumbs now snap to grid if Snap is enabled.
  • Editors: Swipe down over begin or end of selected part to zoom in. Old zoom level is restored on lifting finger.
  • Editors: Improved zooming behaviour.
  • Editors: Visual feedback on touching edge or center selected part.

Fiddlewax Blue (video)

I noticed this app the other day but didn't think too much of it. The video makes more sense though.

Mobile Music Sequencer adds dropbox support

Mobile Music Sequencer now supports Dropbox as an export destination folder. Only a small update, but a useful one.

Having been on one of these sessions a while ago I can thoroughly recomend them. You can find out about their events here.

Thinking about going to LEME

It's a pretty impressive event with some great speaker and sessions. I'm considering going along myself too. So I thought I'd share the details.

What's your app of the week?

What's the app that's been most useful or the most inspiring this week? Or maybe just the app that's been your work horse for the last few days. Tell me which one it is and why.

Comment of the week ... "Do NOT watch this! It is the first puff of analog crack that in 5 years will leave you near penniless"

I loved this comment. As I read it I thought it was a complaint or something, but after I'd read the whole thing it made me smile!

"Do NOT watch this! It is the first puff of analog crack that in 5 years will leave you near penniless, possibly homeless, and definitely single. You have been warned. "

Made on this post on Modular Synth basics.

KORG iKaossilator gets a minor update

Not a huge update for KORG iKaossilator, but nice to see that they're still moving it forward. Here's what's new:
  • Optimized for iOS 7 design
  • Some improvements and bug fixes

Korg's Gadget is still on sale

Don't forget that Korg have extended the sale price on their Gadget app until the 31st of March now. Their other apps have all gone back to their normal prices, so if you thought you'd missed the sale on Gadget, you haven't.

Reminder: The Mutable Trusted Builder list

I've posted about this before, but it's worth restating as it's a very handy resource if you'd like to get into DIY synths but are put off by the fact that you don't have all the skills for actually building the stuff. So I wanted to make people aware of the Trusted Builders list on the Mutable Instruments forum. The trusted builders are people who are skilled at making Shruthis or other mutable instruments kits. So if you're interested in getting a kit made but either might struggle to make it yourself or just don't have the time, you should check out this list, and my personal favourite on the list is Paul (who happens to be an old friend, but is also an excellent builder).

iVCS3 still on the way ...

QOTD: What sound would you love to re-create?

Not everyone wants to recreate a particular sound but it can be a good way to start to craft something or it can be a good way to learn how to use an app or instrument. So what's the sound that you're looking to recreate at the moment, or that's eluded you so far?

Whilst this really isn't mobile related at all, I thought it would be useful to a lot of people who are interested in the concepts behind modulars and using app based modulars.

Conserve the sound

I really love the idea of this idea and this site. What a great idea. It's made me think of sounds that I think need to be conserved. Please take a look, it's a really interesting project.

Caustic 3 running on a Nook

A friend of mine has just bought a Nook and really likes it. He's got the free version of Caustic and wanted me to show him how to get started. So I did, although it didn't take long as Caustic is such an awesome app.

It was a bit of a shock though coming from iOS to the Nook as the latency is truly shocking, but it runs and sequencing and playback are all fine on it.

Interesting to see this app running on hardware that I've never used before. I thought I'd share the experience.

Video description:

Testdrive of an Analog SoundLab in a Box, featuring a custom-finished art box outfitted with two mounting board panels, two littleBits/Korg Synth Kits plus extra wire, inverter, dual OR, slide dimmer modules, and a littleBits-adapted adafruit Trinket ATtiny85 MCU sequencer. The Analog SoundLab assembly video sequence is backed by an excerpt of Big Badda Boom - The LeeLoo Mix, also featured in track 7 (Alien Shores 2 - Drum Summons) of Analog Planetfall by Oculo Rapido. All sonics and hacking perpetrated by Doktor Bob.

My comments:

I find this kind of thing quite interesting. Seeing where people are going with the littleBits synth kit and other modules and adding in micro-controller stuff too. I also like that this has been put in a box to make it as portable as possible. Nice touch.

rrarrow for iPad arrives

From the maker of Phawuo comes rrarrow ...

rrarrow is the experimental modular audio effect and noise machine for the iPad featuring extended feedback capabilities.

Key features:
  • Simplicity. The interface is simplified for faster assembly and more flexible connectivity — you can assemble your effect very fast and control all the processing parameters with the audio signal!
  • Feedback capabilities. You can add feedbacks to the audio chain to get some chaotic noise sounds .
  • Twelve blocks for audio processing:

  • Sine generator. Basic oscillator with sine waveform
  • Signal multiplier
  • Delay
  • Frequency shifter
  • Envelope follower
  • “Lorenz attractor”
  • Quantizer
  • Sample-and-hold
  • Reverb
  • Special Lowpass filter
  • Clipper
  • Nonlinear shaper (for self-oscillating circuit)
  • Audiobus support. Now you can stream live audio directly to other Audiobus-compatible apps! See http://audiob.us for more information. Works as input and filter.
  • Background audio support: enabled when connected to Audiobus and user switchable otherwise.

iPad2 or newer is recommended for complex presets

The app is priced at $3.99.

BeepBoop arrives and is described as having ... "the capacity for great evil", and "Sounds from early Dr Who"

With a description like that how can I (you) resist?

A strange noise-making device.

A collection of blocks of signal processing that document the last few months of my meanderings, wired together to make excessive oddness.

Kinda like an iOS monotron, but with the capacity for great evil.

Made from circuit models. Structurally, there's an antialiased oscillator, feeding a partially temperature-stabilised transistor-ladder VCF (which can be heated), feeding an interesting old pitch-shifter in full-feedback-fun mode.

Plus an LFO for some movement, and AudioBus compatibility.

Sounds vary from early Dr Who to world-ending cataclysms.

BeepBoop is priced at $1.99

DrumPerfect arrives

DrumPerfect is a drum sequencer for IOS 7 that aims at creating extremely naturally sounding drum tracks for electronic music production.

DrumPerfect features three extensive editors to easily create very human-like drum sequences:
  • An extensive pattern editor in which each individual drum stroke has its own velocity, timing and probability. Each pattern has its own BPM, time signature and beat subdivision settings. Multiple strokes can be linked to a single probabilistic event.
  • An extensive kit editor with up to 16 different drum kits with 16 instruments each. Every instrument consists of up to 16 different user-selectable audio samples.
  • An extensive song editor in which a song is built of pattern/kit events.
  • The "Two-handed" and "Humanize" features give a human feel to the rhythm by modelling the human drummer restrictions and variations.
  • DrumPerfect offers extensive options for audio-transfer with other apps:
  • Live-audio source for other apps via Audiobus and Inter-App-Audio.
  • Audio rendering/upload to AudioShare, AudioCopy2, SoundCloud and Dropbox. Both mixed and separate track export.
  • Import of audio samples via iTunes or AudioPaste2.
  • Midiclock sync input with midi song pointer, midi start and midi stop.

The app is priced at $14.99.

"The in-app economy mirroring the music industry?
For real growth to happen there needs to be long-term investment. Is the infrastructure in place for selling music to be a profitable standalone business? Are the appropriate commercial rewards established? Or is the in-app economy just a micro-cosmos mirror image of the overall recorded music industry? What are the implications?"
