Concretedog's new track made using only a GBA. Not bad at all. Listen to it here.

I usually post these when they turn up so I thought I'd include this one. The description of the mods sounds quite interesting.

Well, it isn't an iPhone app ...

So what could it be? Read what Olivier says about his new project:
A couple of days ago, I could make 80% of the functionality work. I spent the whole night playing with it and I had a very good time - I just love it!

I am now working on the remaining 20% of the functionality, which is much harder and requires a totally different set of skills.

After that... don't know... I hesitate between releasing as is, as an open project, and restarting something more ambitious from scratch (now that I have a better understanding of what I am doing) ; or push this thing, no matter how imperfect, to the end.

If this was, say, an iphone app, this would have taken 2 or 3 months. This is obviously not an iphone app, so the development process is totally different.

Is there anything developing an iphone app would have taught me that I hadn't learned while developing Bhajis Loops? I don't think so. Plenty of CPU power, uber-cool development libs like nui... No wonder why everybody is doing it. I love projects that make me feel ignorant and give me a urge to learn - and that is precisely why I do what I am doing...

So, what platform is it then?

A dual OS Smartphone!

Impressive new smartphone. Chinese shanzhaiji make Sunno presents the S880, a smartphone that runs dual OS, Android and Windows Mobile. The S880 has borrowed some design element from Sony Ericsson’s Idou. The dual OS phone is equipped with a 806MHz processor, 256MB RAM.

Sunno S880 packs a 3.6-inch touchscreen, GPS receiver and WiFi connectivity. You can also find a 8 Megapixel camera. The phone is expected to come on 15 October.

If I didn't have an iPhone I think that something like this would be quite tempting

New RJDJ app in review for a month!

Is that normal? For an app to be in review for a month? It sounds like way to long in my book.

Wouldn't this be brilliant on the iPhone?

I think that this would be great if it was on an iPhone. I'm still a bit surprised that no one has integrated AudioBoo into their app directly. Is that something that ioLibrary could do?

Spending time with DopplerPad

I've been using DopplerPad for a while and I love it, that's true. But why? Well, one of the but upsides for DopplerPad is how immediate it is. You can be up and running in DopplerPad in just a few minutes, and I think that is probably an absolute essential for all mobile music apps. DopplerPad can be used by anyone irrespective of their level of ability simply because you can access it's features to make music in the way you want and it doesn't force your workflow.

I've been waiting patiently for the update to 1.05 for this app for a while now, and I hope that some of the features I'd like to see will be in that update, but I thought I'd list out my wish list anyway:
  • Save and load tracks / songs (a must)
  • Start A & B simultaneously
  • Effects
  • Remove last instrument layer
If I could get those it would be brilliant. Of course I'm really looking forward to the integration with FourTrack and maybe even ioLibrary too.

Even so DopplerPad is a great app and I hope that Retronyms and Sonoma Wireworks keep putting out great new features and apps.

These are so rare in coming up I had to post something on it. Worth taking a look at. When I got mine it cost almost £60 so if this one goes for £10 it will be a real bargain.

Pocket Gamer on Beaterator for PSP

I don't own a PSP so I can't comment really on music making software for this platform. I know there have been a few notable homebrew synths and some games, but I'm not close enough to it really.

I heard about Beaterator a while back and read this hands on article from Pocket Gamer with interest. I don't think that it'll make me rush out and buy a PSP or the game, but it is good to hear that other platforms are still getting decent music making software too.

My (current) top ten iPhone apps

Ok, I think I'm going to run through my top ten iPhone apps as at today as the list will change on a regular basis. In fact, how about this becomes a regular kind of feature? Any, here are my current top ten iPhone music apps:

BeatMaker
I still really like BeatMaker. I use the packaged loops and just enjoy making something quick sometimes. It is a great app for getting something going.
BeatMaker

BleepBox
The newest music app of the ten. A ten part synth app is a pretty amazing thing to fit into an iPhone. I've been really enjoying this app for several days now and I'm looking forward to even more Bleepbox goodness to come.
bleep!BOX

Hexatone
A truly amazing innovative and unique drum / percussion app from Amidio although that description doesn't do it justice. This is great for making beats to put into Beatmaker or upload to SoundCloud. The more I use it the better it gets.
JR Hexatone? Pro

DopplerPad
This is another great little music maker for getting a groove going. I am so looking forward to being able to move tracks into FourTrack and do more with them. DopplerPad is wonderful for making great sounding beats.
DopplerPad

PianoStudio
This is a bit different from the others. I really like PianoStudio because in a way it is self contained. I don't expect it to make different sounds or have a drum part because it is just about piano, and it does that really well. From a composition point of view it is excellent and I am really enjoying making some very different kinds of music with it.
PianoStudio

Sunvox
I loved Sunvox on the Palm and Windows Mobile and the iPhone is no different.
SunVox

NLog Synth
A brilliant synth, and I can't wait to get 2.0 as it sounds awesome.
NLog Synthesizer

Jasuto
This is one of the few apps I have that enables me to time travel. Whenever I stop using it I find that several hours have vanished in just a few seconds, or so it seems. It is great for experimenting, and I love experimenting.
Jasuto modular synthesizer

iShred
I've been through a few guitar apps and this is the one I keep coming back to. In the main just for messing about and tweaking effects, and I guess that's what I love most about iShred.
iShred: Guitar + Effects

FIRe
I use FIRe as my main recording app for field recordings. I love it because you can use the GPS to set the location of the recording, add a picture and upload to SoundCloud all in one place. Now if they could just include ioLibrary integration ...
FiRe - Field Recorder

So there you have it. My current top ten. It will change over time, and has done regularly as new apps come in and existing ones get new features.

I'd really like to have a few of you submit you're top ten apps. Please email them to me and maybe I could post one set a day? What do you think?
