If Apple launches an iPhone 5 and iPad Pro (or 3), what will be broken?

Thinking a little about my earlier post and the possibility of new hardware at the beginning of next month it made me wonder what would be broken by doing this?

When the iPhone 4 came out lots of peripheral devices didn't work with it because of the changes in the pin outs on the dock connector. Devices like GuitarJack, Blue's Mikey, and the SynthStation 25 were all casualties of the change.

If we saw another similar change I'm guessing it would cause just as many problems as before, but as there are now even more devices out there, we'll see more of them get broken.

I'm also mindful of what Dan Radin from Alesis said on the Touchsound podcast about Apple giving now earlier warnings about these kind of changes.

As the iOS music ecosystem expands this is going to be more and more of a problem, unless Apple can maintain compatibility with older peripherals, although 'older' is almost certainly the wrong word!

Then it is up to manufacturers to make their products more versatile and more modular. I've got a synthstation 25, but it really needs a doct that is freely interchangeable. I'm sure though that Akai won't be phased by this because they just want to make money. However, I'm pretty sure users will (I hope) eventually vote with their feet and buy the better quality product that adheres to the modular and interchangeable option.

Wallets everywhere.

Anyway, I'm in the same boat. I'm holding off buying anything that plugs into the dock until the 5. I really want the GJ2.

I'm still clinging to my hopes we will see a iLife Pad. If the mac mini can run all that software then just flatten the bugger out and top it with a touch screen. Pull out the in case power supply and jack that sucker full of the flattest batteries apple can find!

Then we might actually see huge Mac appstore growth the likes of the iOS appstore. Imagine getting the "Life Pad" out by the millions. Hopefully the devs would flock to it. Right now the Mac appstore is a little sparse and while it does have good titles the music category is slim pickins. The only real app we have is Nlog! If apple could mac a full OSX driven device in the vein of the iPad the future could be fun, fun, fun. Logic,GB,Ableton....all in a portable touchscreen device like the iPad...sign me up...I might take two :)
