Apple to merge iOS and OSX by 2012?

I've been reading a few rumours around this over the last few days. I can sort of see it from the point of view of Apple originally saying that the iPhone had OSX inside, and since then they have been adding to the OS by bringing in API's from OSX. CoreMIDI being a case in point.

However, I'm not sure I see how Lion and iOS (I still think they should give it some names!) will merge.

Anyone got any thoughts?

I think it's pretty obvious with regards to Lion, that that's the direction they're taking (gesture controls in particular).

Also with the rumor of a "pro level" tablet, which seems inevitable as well, there will need to be a more robust ios platform to make it useful.

The rumors I have read imply that the bottom end Macbook air, iphone, ipod and ipad will have ARM processors.

The pro end will have intel processors for a period of years.

I think that seeing computing in terms of workflow as opposed to programs is the direction they are going in.

Once you have touched a ipad you want that control and relationship with you desktop.

Since iOS is the little brother they'll name it Persian, Burmese, Siamese, Manx, tabby, tortoiseshell ...

Ah I'm so funny I kill myself.

I have to agree with Garloo on the touch interface carrying over to the pc. I have been so used to auto correction and double space forbperiods that I am constantly having to correct myself when I go to my pc!

I think it will be the next step to integrate the two systems the best they can.

ps. Didn't anyone ever tell you it's dangerous to drink and tweet!?! ; )

Did you guys forgot all that Apple talk about how IOS is OSX? Its not like they are going to merge them someday, they already are the same (except the shell). They are simply kept apart artificially to make sure there's a market for IOS. Really, would you really buy new Apple hardware if you could run apps on your existing one?

In the meantime, if you really must have OSX on a tablet, hackingtosh yourself a tablet, or buy a modbook.

How about a tablet or touchscreen laptop that runs both Lion and iOS at the same time? Seems like an easy enough thing to implement given Apple's resources and abilities.

Not by 2012. Certainly the two are merging in some ways, but there are too many differences between a tablet and a PC for 2012 to be the year that they merge completely. Apple has consistently pointed that out, which is why iPad doesn't run OS X to begin with. Someday? Who knows?

Also, Apple will have to rethink this whole "post-PC" marketing strategy when that happens.. maybe "post-post-pc : return to forms" ? :D
