*uck yeah! about time...downloading now :)

An introductory or an upgrade price would've been really nice. It looks like there's some nice features in there, but at 19.99$, I prefer to wait for it to be on sale if ever at all. I paid 19.99$ for Beatmaker 1 and didn't really used it because it couldn't handle looping.

Well, no 3G support means I'm out. Though I guess it makes sense - still, NanoStudio runs just fine on my 3G.

Taking the plunge. Now it better not go on sale tomorrow! :)

I'm not seeing audio tracks. No audio tracks. I swear people were shouting about audio tracks in BM2. There aren't any audio tracks in BM2. Not one. None. .

I agree about fear of sale coming but I don't recall Intua doing that in the past so I'm downloading as I write this and lost all interest in Super Bowl :)

Effects cross controller, sample timestretch/pitch and loop points sound good. I'm not sure I'm ready to jump ship from NS though - I've find the workflow to be second nature, and know some of these features are on the horizon.

Looking forward to some videos :D

It's not too bad so far. It's not as easy to navigate around as NanoStudio is. That felt more instinctive. Not overly impressed with the presets yet, but there's a nice collection of effects. REALLY looking forward the iPad version. I think that will be easier to get around.

Have made three little tunes that completely suck...but that's not the fault of the app at all. :)

Wow the graphical styling has made a departure from BM.. particularly the sequencer window. Seems familiar.

Early verdict: NanoStudio is still superior. I'm seriously disappointed with the selection of sounds. As a matter of fact, I have to keep pausing and quitting the app because my ears are getting fatigued. Everything sounds very harsh and brittle. Navigation is getting a bit easier, and, yes, the sequencer looks VERY familiar to NS users.

But where each and every sound in NS leads to new compositions and ideas, every sound in BM2 sounds harsh and brittle. Maybe things will improve when I start loading in my own samples, but I would have thought this flagship of a product would have had a better selection built-in.

Am looking forward to being proven wrong in ALL of this...would love to love this app.

This is from the Intua website FAQ re: upgrade:

When I want to update to the latest version of BeatMaker, it looks like I have to buy it again.

You need to login on the iTunes App Store using the same login information you used when you first bought BeatMaker. Although it still says "Buy" in the App Store, Apple should not charge you again for the download.

Can anyone confirm this who went from version 1 to 2?

Can anyone tell me if BM2 has support for midi (either core midi or via the midi mobilizer) ?

Paul said...

I have BM 1 and I had to pay for BM 2.

Pighood said...

@Paul....did you confirm the $19.99 charge from iTunes on your credit card's online statement, or did it just confirm the purchase when you clicked "buy?"

I really don't want to be "that guy," but the sequencer is so blatantly lifted from Nanostudio down to the fonts and colors and stuff....unless it turn out that the nano guy worked with them on it or something, I think there's honestly grounds for legal action. I mean it's BLATANT.

Cool app, though!

I agree with Paul about the presets and will add that most of the samples just plain suck. Not what you'd expect for the length of time to get this thing out. Some of the drums are OK but the majority sound canned. Maybe a little to niche - or not usable for more than one song.

But! That's fixable. I'm just going to use my own samples instead:)

Darksound said...

uh that is "TOO" niche. How embarrassing....

Personally I feel that expectations have been unfairly high. That along with not having much time with the app, some criticisms may be premature. I have listened to the presets .The real life instruments are superior to NS. The synths do seem less dynamic, but I will reserve judgement until all of the possible variables have been exhausted. Bottom line, too soon to judge.

I'm frugel when I shop for groceries.. I use coupons for fast food.. I'm miserly on the gas pedal.. turn off lights around the house.. drink instant coffee skip the starbucks..

Why? So when a new app comes out.. I don't think for a split second about the cost...I get the highest :) per $ out of iphone apps by far.

But where is the damn user manual ??????

Icepulse said...

@Pighood
Its a totally different app, not an update. Question answered.

In fairness to BM2, all the presets for the synths have the release turned WAYYY down, so they all sound kind of plunka plunk, but they just need a little tweaking. I personally feel that all samples are superior to NS, both on the pads and the keys. The pianos, mallets and strings sound better. Ever loaded up the electric piano preset on NS? Horrible.

Anyway, the time stretching and slicing are very nice, effects are legion, automation is rich and unlimited tracks, plus 8 sets of 16 drum pads per track is d-d-dope.

All told, if they hammer out a few bugs (see: crashes) and fatten up a few preference settings, I daresay it may replace NS for me.

Time will tell.

Stability issues aside, this app kills NanoStudio for me.

The UI in general is nicer than NS's. Navigating the app isn't as simple as NS but once you know where everything is, it's not a problem.

BM2's synth is entirely sample based unlike NS's Eden, but I don't see this as a problem. It's simply a different approach.

Better MPC-like drum machine interface than NS.

Sequencer is very similar to NS but a little better IMO. It just feels cleaner.

Unlimited tracks compared to NS's limit of 4 synths, 2 drum machines.

Much better sample editor than NS. The time stretching and pitch shifting are killer features!

Included samples might not impress some people but I'm not sure why those people put so much weight on bundled stuff. Import your own samples!

Included demo songs aren't as good as NS's demo songs.

Audio tracks will come in an update, I'm sure. I'm also hoping the iPad interface comes very soon.

This app was definitely worth the wait and I'm looking forward to future updates to both BM2 and NS. Competition between these 2 apps can only be a good thing for users.

Hmm, no 3G support- despite their own blog saying that 3G would be supported! (I'm not going to sift through 84++ pages to give you the quote link!).

Come on iPad 2, hurry up and arrive, so I can buy one!!!!! ^_^

Anonymous said...

BTW, BM2 is NOT "the most advanced mobile music workstation"!! Unlike Nanostudio, BM2 DOESN'T work on 3G, nor does it have synthesis capability!

Anonymous said...

No Core MIDI/synthstation support.. Back to NS *SIGH*

Losing my patience with BM2 a bit. So far every project I have tried to do has involved multiple crashes on both iPad and iPhone, even after a clean boot. This morning it completely locked up my iPhone then rebooted itself and sat for ages at the Apple logo screen. I thought it had bricked it for a while there!
