iPhone App Directory

My fav apps at the moment

I get asked on a regular basis what my favourite apps are, and I've been giving some thought to how to respond. This is because my favourite apps change on a fairly regular basis. Sure, some stick around for a while, some come in and out. I'm sure you all have similar experiences.

So what I thought I'd do is give you my 5 favourite apps on a monthly basis and I might even do my 5 iPhone and 5 iPad, and even 5 Android if I can!

Also, if you want to get your top X apps on Palm Sounds then just send me an email.

1. Xewton Music Station (for me, the best all-around music making app)

2. NanoStudio (a very close second)

3. Pocket Organ (love the sound of a Hammond Organ)

4. Mixtikl (great fun and lots of inspiration)

5. Jasuto (love the depth of the sound and the experimental aspect of the app's intent).

I have to say that I actually do like Akai's synthstation for little bits and pieces. The synth engine is very good too. In addition, having a physical keyboard on the Synthstation 25 is a huge plus for me.

Ill just list the ones I'm most passionate about
1 nanostudio (not much to add here... the update with eq and compression..possibly efx chaining looks amazing)

2 nanoloop - ever since copy and paste this has become much ,ore useful

3 multitrack daw - great way to multitrack and integrate audio from apps... took me a while to fig out the metronome was implemented, but that's cause I didn't rtfm

4 jasuto - somehow, I have trouble getting complete musical ideas out of this. Maybe partially cause the sequencer is not super efficient. Still I love the concept, and I can easily make sounds not possible anyplace else

5 sunvox - I love the near unlimited possibilities. don't like that copypaste isn't there yet and the interface is not well optimized 4 the ipod. Entering control params via sliders could go a long way towards thisl Still ... with enough patience there's almost no electronic music that couldn't be done on this (in principle).

Despite critiques, I love these (and many other) apps w a passion! Lots of other progs deserving honors too (nlog, thumbjam, filtatron, isequence, soundprism... I could go on...)

Razzies:
Rebirth - id be singing a diff tune if it supported copypaste and used pages/tabs instead of this web browser interface ...
Synthstation- its like they took all the confusing things that made isyn not work as an interface and made it work even less. However, copypaste support would go a long ways towards making this useful.

Android market is still growing up, but these guys are paving the way:

Supreme mpa
Reloop
Rd3
Tapemachine
Rubato irb (ok that's cheating... but what's more flexible than being able to program the android api on the device?)

My current favorites would have to be (for iPad)

Minisynth Pro
ISequence HD
Molten Drum Machine
Reforge
And Xenon

1. iMS-20
2. iSequence
3. SunVox
4. ThumbJam

Least favorites:
iElectribe: I believe this is an accurate emulation of the hardware, but I think the hardware sounds nauseatingly dull.

Studio.HD: Far from a DAW, not quite a loop sequencer. What is this thing even supposed to do?

Mine have to be something like this;

1. Sonorasaurus Rex...the UI makes you feel like you're flying a spaceship rather than DJing!

2. Curtis - the sounds on this are full on and way out of the ordinary.

3. Reactable - still haven't mastered it yet, but enjoying working out what others have done with it so far...nice collaborative website too.

4. Korg iMS20 - just love mucking about with those patch leads!

5. ChipPad - the first app I bought and still drains my time through enjoyable use

6. Electrify - my second purchase and still very useful

7. Thicket - it's very simple and I could zone out for ages just casually swiping the screen in some ambient hypnosis.
