I'm a little confused by all the marketing hype around music apps like these. Many seem to infer artists might use their iPad-based vocal and guitar processing and amplification for live performance.

I perform live and dabbled with doing just that, but found that 1) latency was an issue, 2) it was difficult to interface with the iPad while playing without looking a bit silly, 3) I was worried about my iPad getting ripped off during breaks unless it was stashed, 4) there were plenty of other road worthy hardware-based devices available that did a much better job, 5) it didn't mix well with my current PA setup in terms of patching and placement, 6) noise and impedance matching was an issue.

I believe this sort of iPad music stuff is great and a whole lot of fun, but that it will be used in living rooms and bed rooms, and on busses and airplanes and camping trips. So please spare me any marketing hype of flashy rock stars using iPads in concert for vocals and guitar work. Its so karaoke.

Soundog, while I agree that IK hardware is kind of fiddly, I don't see anything preventing the iPad from filling the roll you describe. It looks like Alesis' forthcoming studio dock would resolve most of your problems.
