Vitual Deck updated to version 1.6
The new version of Virtual Deck has gone up to the app store today. Here's what's new:
- 33rpm and 45rpm (songs are played at 45rpm by default)
- fast-forward and fast-rewind by spinning the virtual turntable
- precision-beatmix using the Scratch screen
- -20% to +20% speed slider and a display showing the current speed deviation
- supports Ogg/vorbis, most WAV and most AIFF audio files (MP3 is currently not supported!)
- upload files using the intuitive upload screen
- built-in cutoff and resonance filter
- repeat button for small cuts
OSC Updated to version 1.01
OSC has had a small update. OSC is a controller app for MAX/MSP and Pure Data. Here's the description from the OSC site:
The application allows to remote control and receive feedback from software and hardware that implements the OSC protocol such as Pure Data and Max/MSP.
The interface provides a number of different touch controls to send/receive messages:
Faders
Rotary controls
Push buttons
Toggle buttons
XY pads
Multi-faders
Multi-toggles
LEDs
The program comes with four layouts that are organized in multiple pages. We are working on another version of this program with configurable layout and adjustable control behavior and value-range.
SrutiBox: What's coming in version 1.1
SrutiBox 1.1 has some interesting new features coming:
- Speed up of synthesis loop for higher fidelity.
- More sensitive accellerometer action. I smoothed it out on purpose to make development easier, but I'm going to change it to require more active pumping (unless you turn up the minimum volume slider to disable it, of course).
- More timbres, with names for them.
- Volume sliders spread out to easy live performance and better accommodate multi-touch
- A Custom interval set
- Other User interface improvements, e.g. real sharp and flat characters displayed instead of # and b.

Moo Cow Music releases Guitarist for iPhone
Moo Cow Music have released a new app. Guitarist is a guitar simulator with two guitars, effects and recording facilities.
From a very brief look at it, it seems a bit more complex than their previous applications. So I'm quite looking forward to giving it a try.

Experienced guitar players can use Guitarist on the road to experiment with chord progressions, and record riffs or solos on a "musical notepad" for later study back in the studio with their full kit.
Novices can program in existing tablature and chords to popular songs, and then give note-perfect performances to their friends.
Performances can be recorded and overdubbed multiple times to create the perfect song, which can be saved for later playback. PaklSound1 Deluxe
Today I noticed that there's a new version of PaklSound. The 'deluxe' version. This version seems to add a few new features:
PaklSound1 Deluxe Features:
- Tap and swipe up or down to make a note sharp or flat (Chromatic.)
- Realtime Mode: play sounds or introduce variation into your tracks, on the fly. (left side of screen=flat, right side of screen=sharp)
- Instantly Pause, Resume and Restart playback
- A/B Alternate Mode: effectively double song length by making any layer(s) alternate between parts A and B
- Email your songs (in XML format) from your iPhone to your desktop computer or to our server. Use Settings to indicate your default preference.
- Re-download songs or share them with other PaklSound1 users. Songs must be placed on a webpage, and accessed using paklsound1:// URLs. A preference option allows you to disable chromatic mode (natural notes only).
This is an interesting way of differentiating between versions, not one I've seen before so far.

iTouch MIDI: Now tested with 2.1 firmware

GetLoFi: French Connection
GetLoFi has an interview with bitcrusher which is very interesting. I especially liked some of the instruments and had to show the hairdryer in particular. Really worth a read.
GetLoFi also has a post on how many circuit benders are not part of any community or go to events, and the percentage is really high, which I found amazing.

Another app coming in from Cosmovox?
I was reading the FAQ on the cosmovox site when I came across this:
So now I'm looking forward to their new app and being able to record using cosmovox.
How can I record the music I make with Cosmovox?
This will be addressed in a future update. Unfortunately Apple has yet to provide a way for developers to save music created with an iPhone to the iTunes Music folder of your iPhone. Currently your best bet is to make an analog recording from the headphone jack. Soon we will provide recording and network uploading of audio in Cosmovox and our other music applications for the iPhone which we have under development.
So now I'm looking forward to their new app and being able to record using cosmovox.

According to the RJDJ site they've submitted their app to the Apple app store for approval and are just waiting now to get a response.
The first version of the app will include 12 scenes. I'm not entirely sure what these are, but I'm looking forward to having a play when it is ready.
TrakAx on video compression

4 Tracks update allows 'eject'
Little Code Shop sitehave published an update to their 4 tracks app. This allows you to erase an individual track independently.
New version of Griff available !
Amazing! I really didn't expect this at all. A new version of Griff has turned up! Here are the details:
With no updates in over 5 years, it comes as somewhat of a suprise, even to us here at PlanetGriff, to discover that a new version has been released.
Version 1.5.5.3 is available for immediate download
There is only 1 new feature, however - support for all the weirdy screen resolutions that have cropped up since Microsoft dropped the classic QVGA 240x320 screen size requirement for all PocketPC devices.
So now you can run Griff on square screen (240x240 and 480x380) and landscape screens (240x320 and 480x640) as well as QVGA 240x320 and VGA 480x640. Hurrah.
Although to be honest, Griff still looks best at the 240x320 Classic resolution.
So, does this mean there is potential for further and more significant enhancements to Griff? Who can tell.
PSPSeq 3.01 Released
A new version (3.01) of PSPSeq is out. Here are the details:
Key features of PSPSeq:
- up to 16 independent audio tracks per song
- a wide variety of synthesizers from traditional virtual analog and FM to Karplus-Strong
and unique digital oscillators with parameter controls rarely seen in commercial synths
- WAV file playback with looping, pitch shift, and configurable start/end points
- many FX algorithms from digital filters and waveshapers to bitmasks and decimation
- all synthesizer parameters can be set to unique values on a per-step basis
- step sequencer with configurable step length, swing, highly accurate BPM, and tap tempo
- probabilistic sequencing: the decision to retrigger to be based on a 0-100% probability
rather than a boolean yes/no operation
- song sequencing with 100 different loops per song, 1000 measures per song, and loop
repeat capability
- load and save of synthesizer presets between songs
- record loops and songs to WAV
Some of the improvements over PSPSeq 3.00 include:
- added 3.xx build for direct 3.xx compatibilty
- fixed pitch bend to work for both higher and lower frequencies
- added support for reporting memory for > 4GB memory sticks
- fixed bug with accessing menus in SONG mode
- fixed bug in BFM modulator generator
- fixed bug in clearing steps in a loop
- fixed bug in displaying VOL data in EDIT SYNTH menus
- fixed bug in copying N and WAV parameters in TRACK menu
- fixed bug in SHIFT TRACK when shift values was > 32
- changing control-only step vs "normal" step doesn't quickly toggle in sequencer

As part of our programme for 2008 Cybersonica is collaborating with the Future of Sound and Lighthouse & with the support of The Basement and SCAN to develop the AV Lab - a week-long residential creative & practical workshop exploring sound, moving image, art and technology - funded by the National Lottery through the Arts Council England. This will take place at The Basement , Argus Lofts, 24 Kensington St, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 4AJ from Sunday, 2nd - Sunday, 9th November 2008.
