Working with Jasuto

I got some time to play with Jasuto just recently and lost quite a lot of time just enjoying the interface and how you can end up making something that sounds quite strange and interesting without doing very much at all.

Having just spent time using Pd on the mac for a few days I've found Jasuto a real pleasure to work with and it is really suited to the style of music I'm making right now, if you can call it a style that is.

I like the whole idea that the patch is the synth, but in many ways I think Jasuto is a combination of both really, for me anyway. I've found that I can make the whole basis for a piece using Jasuto, and I think I've only just started to scartch the surface of it.

If you haven't tried it as yet then you really should give it a go.

webOS SDK goes public (via PalmInfocenter)

PalmInfocenter posts on Palm's webOS SDK going public. I guess Palm are hoping that by releasing the SDK they'll get more developers and apps on the webOS platform.

I wonder if we'll see any audio or controller apps for the Pre? Doesn't seem like that kind of platform though does it?

CDM on new Akai controllers

These look fantastic although a lot like the earlier Korg Nano series. CDM has the scoop on these. I just wish someone would launch something like this as a hardware add on for the iPhone / iPod Touch.

Something new coming from Yonac ...

Yonac (the guys behind MegaSynth and MiniSynth) are bringing something new to the iPhone according to their latest tweet. If it is as good as their previous work (and why wouldn't it be?) then I'm sure we can look forward to something amazing.

Hexatone update

I'm sure some of you got an email from Amidio about Noise.IO and "Good Night, States" Noise.io soundbank for their songs, and at their next show you can plug your iPhone or iPod into the house sound system and jam along with the group.

At the end of the email they say that Hexatone will be out in a week!

Excellent news.

Amazing news !!!!!

I just found this from Olivier at the Bhajis Garden forum:
A new project

Jul 15, 2009 13:17

Hi people!

I've recently started again spending long nights hacking on a music/audio/synthesis related project.

I can't reveal anything for now because I have to deal with a lot of novel things, a lot to learn - so I have no idea if what I am doing will succeed or not. It's crazy - I really have no clue what I am doing, but I am doing it anyway, and trying hard!

What I can tell is that if I succeed, this will be something I will be very proud of, something that some of you here will surely enjoy using, and a first step towards a new range of projects.

I can tell it'll be free/open-source, and that contributions/modifications from individual users will be welcome.

Stay tuned :)

For those who don't know, Olivier built Bhajis Loops which is still one of the best mobile music studios ever made, so I'm betting that whatever this new project is it will be amazing to say the least.

Gamesalad thoughts

I posted on GameSalad the other day and the guys at GameSalad pointed me at some of the games that have been made by users on their beta software. Whilst there aren't loads of music games there are a few. Most are quite simple and wouldn't hit the majority of iPhone apps that are coming out now. However, once GameSalad really gets off the ground it could be an interesting way to get your own apps / applets off the ground and into an iPod Touch or iPhone.

If you're interested and don't know anything about programming then it is worth taking a look at.

iSample for iPhone

iSample is a sample player for the iPhone. I think it was in a video that I posted a few days or a week ago and a number of people were asking what app it was.

I'm not sure if you can edit or pitch the samples once you've got them.

mStudio

Here's a little app that's just turned up today. A sample based studio app that can edit samples and then 'remix' tracks. Not entirely sure what this means and there's no video on their site to show what it can do.

If anyone's used this then please get in touch and let me know what it is like.

SoundGrid on the bus

I was on the bus yesterday and gave over some time to play with SoundGrid.

As I've mentioned before, one of the things I like most about mobile music apps is the ability to get started with something almost immediately. SoundGrid fits the bill. There's always a balance between being able to get into making some music quickly and having enough control over the sound. I think that SoundGrid is quite close to achieving that balance.

I like the fact that I can start off a track and make something reasonable in just a few minutes then stop and start as and when I please. What I think it could do with is a little more control over the sounds themselves. Nothing major, but perhaps some basic synthesis so I could start a track and then adjust the sounds as I wanted them in real time.

Just a thought. SoundGrid is still and excellent app with lots of scope.

Are netbooks a viable platform for mobile music?

I've been toying with the idea of getting a netbook for a while now. I'm coming around to the view that there is a viable space inbetween my laptop and my iPhone / other portable devices that's big enough to do something with. But I know very little about netbook OS's, and I want to avoid going down the XP route if possible, which makes me wonder what is possible with a netbook?

Can you use it for making mobile music? Are netbooks powerful enough, and is there any music software that's worth running on them.

In some ways netbooks today make me think of my old Toshiba Libretto which I got rid of a couple of years ago. I really liked the device, but couldn't really find a use for it, and I want to avoid having the same experience with a netbook.

So, what should I go for? Any suggestions, or should I wait for the much fabled Apple netbook which may never ever arrive?

Loads of Apple netbook rumours again

Once again there are loads of rumours about an Apple netbook, apparently for this autumn.

Obviously it'd be great news if they did bring one out, but they've consistently said that they won't bring one out. One question I have is what OS would it run? Before Chrome OS was announced I would have assumed that an Apple netbook would run standard OSX, but now I wonder if Apple might do something in the middle ground between OSX and the iPhone OS?

Who knows.
