I think that Apple have been very smart if having the iPod Touch. A device almost identical to the iPhone just without the phone part.
So why don't other hardware manufacturers do the same? Aside from tablets, which I'll have to admit are very cheap, and often cheaper than an iPod Touch anyway, are the nearest thing, but nothing in the Android world takes the same form factor.
Or did I miss something?

Samsung created one based on the original Galaxy S. I can only assume there wasn't a market for it as it was competing with cheap android phones that performed the same function and worked as a phone as well. I'm guessing the ipod touch took off because a. of the ipod brand and people just naturally upgrading, perhaps it also came out just before the time when people seriously considered putting all their music on their phone as well b. it allowed people that couldn't justify the cost of an iphone to get a taste of ios. it will be interesting to see where apple goes with it as it doesn't get much in the way of updates. though maybe they have to keep it going otherwise it will be only iphone users buying music from itunes (i'm assuming here that people who only have an ipad for an ios device, don't buy as much music from itunes as most people want their music to be mobile (e.g. car's , walks ,bike rides etc...)

I'm not saying it's equivalent feature for feature, but the I believe the wifi 4.0, and 5.0 were Samsung's attempt at an Android style ipod touch.
Samsung Galaxy Player?
many
google help you
well, Archos has some "Android Players" in stock: http://store.archos.com/android-players.html
seems to be pretty much the iPod equivalent. don't know how successful they are, though :-)

What about this?

I have been looking for the same thing. I have always preferred using my palm T5 or Lifedrive for bhajis loops or sunvox, more than I ever did like using my Centro or Treo. All I can find for an non-phone android device is either cheaply made chinese tablets with poor specs, or a well made tablet with good specs but is way overpriced IMHO (or at least more than I am willing to spend on a music making tool with only a few apps available in android market). If I were to buy an unlocked android phone it would cost me around $400-800 (which I don't want because I have no interest in having 2 plans or replacing my iPhone with an android phone).
I keep toying with the idea of buying an archos tablet, 7 or 8 inch usually for between 150$ and 199$, but they all have really bad reviews. They are not usually connected to the android market, they have capacative screens, not great cpu and ram specs, and have difficult to replace firmware. But still I keep thinking about archos tablets as my best option.
I think most companies are just hoping people buy specced out tablets, presumably if you need a handheld device its usually because you need a smartphone or mp3 player, which most people want both as a single device. I think apple has the iPod touch market because they have graduated a niche group to buying iPod touches instead of classic media (mp3 and video only) consuming iPods ( aimed at grandparents and children mostly). If you want a device to do something other than just normal smartphone or general media consumption functions, you most likely are looking for a tablet. Anyway, who would be buying an android device that is the size of an iPod touch other than musicians and maybe certain gamers?
Thats my crazy theory anyway.
I've been using an Archos 32 for the past couple of years and really like it. The music apps aren't on par with the iOS devices (but we knew that anyway), but I love being able to drag and drop just about any media file onto the device and it works like a charm. Did I mention that I really dislike iTunes?

I think that there's definitely a lack of marketing for a product like this, android's been around for some time but you never see this. Maybe it's because everybody just goes for the iPod.
One other option might be to buy a used android phone on Ebay on just never activate it...? might not be the cheapest way though.
