Well, I got my white one today (yeah, I was one of the people who ordered in the first 17 minutes in the US) and so far I am liking it, but it will take a while to judge. It seems to be about as light as my original iPod touch, and much faster than my original iPad. If my main use was music apps and the size and weight were not concerns, though, I'd probably go for the latest generation of full-size because it should be far more future-proof.

Apple, futre-proof? You got to be kidding...
My less than 2 years old ipad 1 is now rendered obsolete because Apple won't even release IOS6 for it.
The same thing happened to my 2G ipod Touch, less than 2 years after buying it Apple dropped its support.
So yeah, don't worry about this, absolutely nothing from Apple is future-proof.
Just enjoy it while its still working and updated (which should be less than 2 years).
