What's coming in NanoStudio 1.2

Some amazing stuff coming in version 1.2 of this excellent app. Here's what's made it so far:
  • In-app purchase to upgrade 6 to 16 instrument tracks
  • Configurable instruments on each track (TRG or Eden), mixer has its own track
  • Up to 4 sequencer tracks per instrument (up to 64 sequencer tracks in total)
  • Retina display support for iPod/iPhone 4
  • Supports launching and purchasing other audio copy/paste apps via the Sonoma compatible apps list
  • Sequencer track mute/solo, quantize down to 1/64, quantize event length and end as well as start, view grid without snapping
  • Configurable mixer with volume/pan automation and up to 3 insert effects per bus (input, send or output)
  • New effects include compressor, 3 band parametric EQ and Lo-Fi (bitcrush/decimate) setting added to Waveshaper
  • Offline processing of samples through an effects chain using the sample editor (with undo)
  • Better mixer VU meters and accurate clip detection algorithm for final output stage
  • Better 'picker' for choosing controller events in the pattern editor, note events can now be seen when editing controllers
  • Eden loads samples ahead of time, so preset changes are ready when they're needed
  • Increased instrument polyphony
  • Tempo/time sig available from main menu
  • New 'click only during record' setting
  • Tidied up UI

Great!

And I can write this before loopstationzebra complains about Nanostudio getting Retina Display in the update but not MIDI.

Looking forward to proper iPad support too! ;)

ipad .....hmmmm theoretically the support would be easier than adding retina support

OMG the midi strikes-shit-back again.
For my use most of these features are vital and I can imagine another update like that with features more important than midi.

@Anonymous

Maybe upscaling the graphics for the ipad is easier to do when its been already been done for the retina display because of the higher resolution graphics?

@iLpD

Maybe he started working on these features before. Maybe implementing midi in Nanostudio is not as easy as first thought and will take more time.

I think MIDI will come to NS, just give it some time.

What kind of midi do you mean since nano
has coremidi line 6 midi and ss25 ?

Knowing Blip's work, it is reasonable to assume that he would not be satisfied simply "upscaling" the phone version...

To take advantage of the increased screen real estate, I expect to see a significant redesign when it hits the iPad, and this will take some time but will be totally worth the wait!

The feature I really want to see is the ability to open Midi files from email. I don't want to be tied to a laptop for transferring files between apps. This feature is currently offered by Music Studio and NlogSynth Pro but I really want to see it with Nanostudio. That and midi out function.

@Robert

I'm afraid I think Johnny is closer to the real answer. If you read on the Blip forums, NS was made entirely in a module that was wrapped in some kind of shell, so that the same module could be used for both Mac, Windows, iOS, even WP7 and Android, the latter two haven't happened yet- I assume because the hardware (or even software) isn't quite there yet?

It would make sense to make a retina version, because that is only a higher count in resolution (screen dpi). When the app is x2'd the result should look better. But at the end of the day what's really needed is a complete rewrite of NS, and somehow I don't see that coming for a really long time. :(

CoreMIDI and MIDI support is really important and It's a silly oversight. So yeah, I agree entirely with loopstationzebra too (even though he hasn't said anything yet!).

PS Xewtron Studio, it seems, is already capable of MIDI out, so despite having a more boring synthesis core (if any), Xewtron is the more powerful app of the two right now.

why are you guys speculating about stuff that is already known? blip has said that the next release after 1.2 is going to be an ipad version that is re-worked to take a advantage of the ipad's screen real estate.

@Legs

Well it can't be easy to find, otherwise there wouldn't be this conversation going on would there?

Why don't you send us a link?

am I missing something ?
the nanomanual reads it supports core midi for ipad

This is a mind blowing scale up to NanoStudio. For some reason I was under the impression that 8 tracks was kind of the top that the developer wanted to go on the phone which is still double but 16 x 4 that is off the hook.

Midi seems like a nice feature but maybe it's me but I can wait as I write mostly inside the app. It would be nice at some point to be able to do the kind of connecting that "finger" is doing.

Odd I find Xewtron's sequencer realy hard to use and pretty much forces you to write everything in tiny pieces which Nanostudio does not. Different sounds in Xewtron nice but four pad drums are a bit of a limitation nightmare. I guess midi implemtation makes these limitations less? At least in the ios enviroment Beatmaker 2 and Nanostudio are the go to apps for arrangeing togeather complex stuff.

@The Flaming Stylus

I actually asked Matt/ Blip about this and he tried to impliment that in this update...unfortunately it was too tough to do for this update.

He made a list of things he tried buit could not do. Emailed midi was one of those things.

ALSO, There are screen shots of the new updates on the Blip forum if anyone is interested.

Looks a lot different.

How can anyone complain about this update? Just stop making music or use another app already. Matt is a BEAST.
