Google addressing Android fragmentation

Something else that came out of Google's IO conference was that they're addressing the fragmentation issues and lack of OS upgrades for devices. Google are now going to guarantee 18 months of upgrades for new devices from participating handset manufacturers and carriers.

So far the list isn't huge although lots of the big names are there already. I'm hoping that more will be added and that this will stretch to the UK and Europe soon too.

This is excellent news in my opinion.

Its a good thing that Google steps in. The way carriers are locking up an open OS like Android is ridiculous. Android should be alterable in a way to stops your from updating to the newer version.

Google is handling fragmentation a lot better than Apple, which is basically saying "no, there's no fragmentation in IOS, just buy a new device when we'll drop support for your current one.", proving they are not able to support the whole palette of devices they have created themselves for more than 2 years.
