energyXT for iPhone

Thanks to J Haler for tipping me off about this app. It certainly looks like it requires a closer look. Here's the details:

Music creation and recording app with samples provided by Loopmasters.

Create your own music with 4 track types:
  • Drum track. Sample based track for making beats
  • Sound track. Sampler/synthesizer track for making bass lines and melodies
  • Chord track. Play and record your favorite chords with the sampler/synthesizer
  • Audio track: Record your voice or guitar, with multi-take recording.
Arrange your beats in to Intro, Verse, Chorus etc for easy remix and arrangement of new songs.

energyXT for iOS is the perfect companion for your music creation software on your desktop computer or laptop. Sketch down and work with your ideas and finally export your tracks to Dropbox, either as a mixdown (audio/MIDI) or as one (audio/MIDI) file per track.

The app is priced at $9.99.

I used to love this modular doohickyness on windows. It had some issues mostly midi and sync related but was a blast. Similar to Jasuto pro which also has issues (I've never been able to get audio copy to work in Jasuto and it crashes alot). Anyway, am quietly optimistic about EXT, nice scoop palm sounds!

If this is anything like the daw, that would be great. I don't use ext much these days, but I did like certain things about it - modular patching, the builtin synth still sounds /plays nicely.

I hope it's not some kind of dumbed down karaoke+band in a box type of thing. The idea of a "chord track" doesn't sound too promising though...

I think it's been dumbed down. This ain't no modular beast..

Anybody bought it?
There is no single word about modularity or even about fx in description :) how about that>?

£5.99 for this detritus!?! It's terrible. I want my money back!

In the age of NanoStudio and BeatMaker1/2, this is appalling

..and I don't care if the developer wants to have a cry

I just wanna know if it can load .wav's! I've emailed em n I'll let you know if I hear anything,I find energy's really quick for getting idea's down so fingers crossed!

Maybe the Riffworks type app my workflow is needing, IF the four tracks can be of the same type (audio track with multiple parts) AND has audio copy/paste. Does anyone know?

@Anon
"£5.99 for this detritus!?! It's terrible. I want my money back!"

Then why did you bought it in the first place? Wouldn't that be stupid?

"In the age of NanoStudio and BeatMaker1/2, this is appalling
..and I don't care if the developer wants to have a cry"

And what about world hunger? THAT is appalling. This app costs less than a magazine. You are simply a spoiled brat.

Also, I don't think the developer cares if you want to have a cry, but please go ahead an cry, we all want to hear that.

Should anon have done more research before buying? Sure. But how does being dissatisfied with something you paid for make you a spoiled brat?

"But how does being dissatisfied with something you paid for make you a spoiled brat?"

Its all about how one expresses his dissatisfaction.

I'm not saying EXT is a perfect app, but taking the time to write how its a detritus and its appalling, without mentioning the reasons why, and suggesting the developer would like to cry over this.. for an app that costs less than a meal, to me, sounds like a spoiled brat.

let's not overreact here. Devs don't kill baby jesus everytime they release an app we don't like.

That being said, my impression is this app is a bit too dumbed down for me. Would love to see a more comprehensive port of ext on ios/android... the stripped down nature of ext should make it ideal for such a port.

What's the difference between the way he expressed his opinion of the app and the way you expressed your opinion of that?

@Jaybry84

Its ok if you didn't like how I answered to him, but you should've been able to see the difference between his comment and my reply ( althought I admit they are both incendiary). I guess I'm just tired of this kind of app bashing devoid of any arguments.

Fortunately, all the other comments in this thread are more descriptive in the apps drawback, and I appreciate that.

Though apps are cheaper than a cheap cup of coffee,
with so many great apps around for 0,99 cents, an app of
8 or 10 dollars gives the feeling of being really expensive
so when I buy a 10 dollar app it almost feels like buying a new car, in app land that is. :)

Anonymous said...

for 10$, you can barely buy a hot wheels car, so it's actually nothing like buying a car.

criticism is fine (i'm the anon that said this is too dumbed down for me), but I think to accuse any dev of being in this for the greed is ignorant.

That's what I said........ :)

I bought this and it actually is really good - the best thing is that, as far as I can tell, it is the only app on the iPhone that allows you to do midi step sequencing and then also record audio tracks (Beatmaker and Nanostudio have midi but you can't sing / play guitar on top of it, without cutting/pasting into a different app). Even on the iPad, the only app that seems to do both midi and audio is Garageband, but then you have the problem of not being able to edit the midi (no piano roll). All the other iPad apps either do only audio (meteor, multitrack daw, studio.hd) or only midi (xewton music studio, electrify). This app is actually a first for iOS.
