Chimera Instruments Ltd bC16 mk5 modular synthesizer on eBay

Another even more rare bC16 on eBay now. I quite liked the description on eBay:

"I ordered a Chimera bC16 synth sometime around the start of Obama's first term. It arrived in January. In the intervening time, I have acquired more than enough gear and frankly want this albatross out of my house.

Patchable with mini banana cables.

Used by Throbbing Gristle & a bunch of fancy brits with the clout to get their synths delivered on time.

Absolutely mint condition. Includes MIDI Din adapter, power supply, inverter, 1/4" jack to 2mm banana cable, 10 mini banana (2mm) patch cables"

Why I'd like to see more music tech companies on crowdcube (especially mobile)

It struck me the other day when I saw that chirp.io were raising money on crowdcube that there are actually very few music tech companies who raise funds on sites like this, and that's a shame in my opinion.

Sure, we see loads on Kickstarter and indiegogo but very few raising equity. In fact the only two I know of are chirp.io and Mindflood (who are the company behind patchblocks).

Personally I'd like to see a lot more music tech companies trying this route to finance. I realise that it isn't for everyone but it does offer a way to engage users by making them a part of the business. As stakeholders, and as shareholders.

I'd certainly be interested in investing in companies offering equity and I'm sure lots of other people would too, given the chance.

Of course it isn't something that'll either appeal to or potentially work for some app makers. I realise that it isn't for everyone of course. However, don't discount it it straight away. Raising equity doesn't mean you need to be a big firm or have a large number of staff. You do need a vision for where you're going with you idea and how you plan to expand and develop, and you can't just raise money in order to spend it for the sake of it or just as normal expenditure.

You'll need a proper business plan. As I said before, it isn't for everyone, but if you've got a vision for where you want to go then it could be worth investing the time and effort in exploring equity raising as an option.

One thing is for sure. The mobile music user base is engaged and keen to be a part of the development of tools, apps, platforms and hardware for the future of mobile music. If chirp can raise money in this way then I don't know why others couldn't too. Of course given that the business model and vision is right.

Different Drummer low price only on for another few days

SynthMaster Player for iOS arrives

SynthMaster Player arrives ...

"SynthMaster: The most powerful softsynth you may not have heard of" Keyboard Magazine

"If ever there was a desert island synth, SynthMaster is it, covering all sonic bases with authority and a superb tone" Computer Music Magazine

"Many developers say that they've produced the one and only synth you'll ever need, but we've always felt that was a dubious claim. In SynthMaster’s case, though, it’s one that rings true" MusicRadar

INTRODUCTION

SynthMaster Player for iPad is the mobile player version the award winning SynthMaster software synthesizer. It is targeted towards users who prefer to use presets rather than designing their own sounds during music production. Although it is a preset based player, users can edit the following preset parameters:
  1. 8 easy parameters assigned by the sound designer
  2. 2 XY Pads assigned by the sound designer
  3. Effect bypass states and send amounts
  4. Layer bypass states and volumes
  5. Master volume, polyphony
The free app comes with 100 factory presets. When users complete registration by entering their names and email addresses they receive another 100 factory presets as a bonus!

After completing registration, users can upgrade to the Pro version of the app by purchasing the "Factory Presets" bank via In-App-Purchase (IAP). With the Pro Upgrade all of the 800 factory presets are loaded and also the following features are unlocked:
  1. Users can save the changes they have made to the presets.
  2. Users can purchase additional preset banks via In-App-Purchase (IAP). We currently have 28 additional preset banks that contain 1750 presets for various genres/styles.
  3. Existing SynthMaster users can download their previously purchased SynthMaster preset banks inside the app, so that they don't have to purchase them again.
  4. Existing SynthMaster users can export their own presets in SynthMaster v2.7 and import them into SynthMaster Player for iPad using iTunes.

BUILT-IN KEYBOARD

The built-in 2 octave keyboard with pitch and modulation wheels lets users play notes without having to connect an external MIDI controller to their iPad. With its Scale functionality, it shows the users the notes on the scale, and with its Chord functionality the user can play a certain chord by pressing a single note.

And then the KORG iM1 arrived ...

A very welcome new addition to the iOS music making world as Korg brings us the iM1 on PalmSounds birthday no less! Here are the details ...

Debut Special Offer: 33% Off through June 30!

A complete reproduction – and more - of the legendary M1 that defined an era
Mobile Digital Synthesizer for the iPad

Since it went on sale in 1988 the legendary M1 music workstation rapidly achieved record-breaking sales, becoming a mainstay of the music scene from the late 1980s and beyond. The common element of electronic instruments that have left their name in history is that they had a unique sound that was difficult if not impossible to replicate. Sounds such as the “M1 Piano” is instantly recognizable and have appeared on countless hit records over many years, and yet these are sounds that could only be produced by the M1. And that’s what you can now have on your iPad!
  • A faithful reproduction of the original M1 Sound
  • The PCM data provides the library of the original M1. For the hardware, we analyzed the circuit diagram of the original design, and completely replicated it in software down to the last detailed parameters. Engineers with an exhaustive knowledge of the M1 made careful adjustments in order to obtain the sound of the original unit, something that cannot be obtained simply by sampling the original sounds.
  • A continued evolution of the M1
  • Not content with simply reproducing the original, iM1 provides further evolutionary developments. Synth parts now have the Filter Resonance that was requested at the time of the original, as well as VDA modulation. The effect parts, originally consisting of only two effects, have been powered-up to 18 effects. The user interface has also been refreshed with additions such as a KAOSS pad. iM1 is the ultimate version of the KORG M1.
  • A gigantic library encompassing 3,300 sounds and 34 cards*
  • In addition to all 19 of the ROM cards originally released for the M1, iM1 also covers the sounds of the M1EX which expanded the internal PCM of the M1, as well as the sounds of the KORG T-series which appeared as an evolution of the M1. There’s also “BEST OF M1”, a selection of 100 great M1 programs. The new “Smart Sound Browser” makes it quick to find the desired sound. You can also view the sounds ranked by how often they are selected by iM1 users around the world. *with all the Expansion Card installed via In-App Purchase
  • KAOSS pad lets anybody perform
  • iM1 features a KAOSS pad from the popular KAOSSILATOR, allowing you to perform intuitively just by touching the screen. By using the dual KAOSS pads to play phrases or adjust the sound, even people who are not accustomed to keyboard instruments or knowledgeable about synthesizers can enjoy performing the iM1. There’s also a conventional keyboard, as well as the “Smart Keyboard”, which lets you specify a scale setting and play phrases with a single finger.
  • Use with KORG Gadget and GarageBand for song production
  • iM1 can be used together with Gadget, the music production DAW app that won the App Store Best App of 2014 award in Japan. If both apps are installed, you can use iM1 as a sound module within Gadget, taking advantage of the program sounds in iM1 for music production. iM1 also supports Audiobus and Inter-App Audio, so it can also be used for GarageBand etc.
  • Connect a MIDI keyboard and use as a sound module
  • In addition to enjoying iM1 on its own, you can connect a USB MIDI keyboard* via a Lightning adaptor (sold separately) and play the iM1 as an external sound module. You can easily take along an even more powerful workstation sound module as part of your iPad-based compact mobile system. *microKEY 25Key, nanoKEY2, taktile series
  • Interchangeable with the KORG Legacy Collection and the original M1
  • Sounds that you create in iM1 can be sent from your iPad via iTunes to a Mac/PC. If you have the Legacy Collection M1, you can use those sounds in a DAW. Data compatibility is maintained not only with the plug-in but also with the original M1; this means that you can transfer data in system exclusive format from the original M1. It’s a dream come true!

iM1 from Korg costs $19.99 at launch, which is a 33% reduction until the 30th of June.

Happy app birthday to iComposer

It's great to see another album from Steve. I'm a big fan of his work and from looking at the list of apps he's using to produce it there are very few that I wouldn't agree with.

About the album:

Gradients of Yesterday - Tracks recorded in Loopy, AudioShare, and Auria. All tracks arranged in Auria and finished in Mastering on an iPad 3.

Back in 2013: 13 Months of Audiobus

An interesting post from 2013 where Michael from Audiobus reflects on how Audiobus started and where it's going.

Back 2008: Belkin Podcast Studio was on the way

At the time I was more interested in the TuneStudio rather than this hardware, and of course both got taken over really very quickly indeed by what would become iOS eventually. That's not to say that both of these weren't good ideas. I think that they were, just that their timing wasn't right, but then, back in 2008 they didn't know how things would turn out.

Back in 2009: No Bhajis coming to your iPhone

At the time I think a lot of people expected Bhajis to come to the iPhone, but after this I think it finally put the idea to bed. It was a shame, but almost inevitable.

Back in 2009: Little Boots on TV with a Tenori-on

This is a significant thing in my view. Seeing on TV playing a Tenori-on which is a mobile music making device, was just great.

Back in 2007: The original mobile music app directory!

This was my first attempt at trying to put together a whole list of mobile music apps. Of course now you couldn't run it as a list anymore, but you could perhaps if it was limited to the older apps.

New version of Animoog on the way ...

Back in 2007: MiJam Minis

To say that these were weird ideas would be a little bit of an understatement. I've never got hold of them, and I probably wouldn't bother now, Strange the directions people take with mobile music making stuff.

Music App Developers Linkedin Group

If you're making music apps then you might want to take a look at this group on linkedin which might be of use to you.

Back in 2007: Theremini

Back on this day in 2007 I posted on Theremini which is now almost impossible to find anywhere sadly. If you're interested take a lookhere

If you haven't heard of Hexaglyphics Noise Generator then you need to right now, because it's awesome

I started playing with this app on Saturday and I struggled to put it down. Don't ask me why though. I just think it's amazing. It's one of those somewhat rare apps that just grabs your attention, or at least it grabs mine anyway.

It reminds me in many ways of the apps from the Strange Agency. In fact, it reminds me of their apps a lot. So that'll probably give you an idea as to whether or not it's the kind of thing you might like.

Anyway, to help you make up your mind here's a video:

For a $3.99 app I'm not sure you can get much better than this. I think I'm going to be playing with this for a very long time.

Good to see an update on the way for KoalaSAN

DFX - Digital Multi-FX

What's new in DFX - Digital Multi-FX? Here's what they have to say ...

"We are happy to announce DFX version 2.0 with a freshly added Midi Engine. You can now plug any Midi controller or keyboard, relax and watch DFX reacting to the push of a fader or the turning of a rotary button. Multiple controllers, multiple gestures are welcome. We have covered pretty much much any control in DFX. Feels nice doesn’t it?

One more thing, there is also a new Flute generator that we are quite proud of ;^)

Enjoy,

The Fingerlab Team."
  • MIDI Input selection (hardware, virtual, network session)
  • MIDI channel selection (1 to 16 or Omni)
  • MIDI LEARN mode : plug you midi device in and control DFX
  • New “Flute” Generator
  • Fixed some minor UI issues
  • Fixed some launching freezes with older ipad models

Quincy Lite 1.1 arrives

Here's what's new in Quincy Lite:

"In version 1.1.0 we have several UI changes. The main toolbars for play, edit and draw modes have been updated with new graphics and highlighting labels plus the color coding of transport UI elements has been refactored to better indicate state. The BPM indicator is now animated in a metronome style and the main draw pattern view has been inverted for better contrast. There were also some moves to keep the iOS version of Quincy in line with the Mac OS version and to present a more logical association as well. The 'use syllables' switch has been moved to the settings window and audio instruments were moved to the module settings window. The latter now fill the entire window instead of using the system picker. Tool slider view animations have been refactored for a snappier feel and the scope of undoable parameters has been widened.

There were also some bugfixes. Notably stepping through a composition now works immediately with newly opened documents. Also, color changes are now immediately refected in the live draw cursor. Also, module setting headers for Voices and Rhythm now appear consistently."

Anyway, just testing out how well you can chop samples to get neat loops on this little beast."

Something new coming from Alex Matheu

Back in 2009: Yonac's miniSynth 2.0 arrived

miniSynth was one of the very first synth apps to hit the app store back in the early days of the iPhone and iPod Touch. I can remember first trying it out and being amazed by it. so it was great to see it get an update back in 2009. And it was worth the wait. miniSynth 2 brought recording and exporting too.

Back in 2008: Concreted0g's show ...

Back then I didn't know him so well as now, but his interesting music of musical ability and the constant need to tinker and make interesting things has made us good friends now. It's nice to think that he's still doing cool stuff as he did back in 2008 at this gig.

pyxis minor 1.3 arrives

pyxis minor 1.3:

Improved audio effects by smoothing parameter changes and adding interpolating delay lines for pitch warbles.

Additional tutorial images to illustrate how to use the in-built audio effects!

Back in 2007: The first time I saw the Akai Trackman

This has always been like some kind of mythical creature for me. I've never seen one in the flesh, and I've never managed to get hold of one either. I'd love to have one, but I know I'd have no use for it either!

In 2008: More on the iPhone as a controller

Another step on the way to the iPhone's place in music making today, from back in 2008. You can read it here.

Wotja 1.7.1 arrived

Here's what's new in Wotja:
  • All new visualiser with 3 new settings: Vis, Size and Opacity
  • Fixed the issue of occasional hanging notes
  • Simplified the URL export to create "Wotja Music URLs" which include the tune, params and emoji, but no other text
  • Now much easier to share Wotja Music URLs in instant messaging apps with goo.gl shortening
  • New option to export Wotja Music URL directly into Messages app widget
  • Revised Player Repeats/Range parameters to now define the total number of times a melody is played (play count), whether a variation or not, rather than to define the number or repeats of a variation; this means that after the play count is reached, no melody will play
  • Improved Action/Sharing popup ordering
  • Much nicer load screen
  • Bug fixes

And there's also the free version too.

In 2007 we still wondered about 3rd party apps on the iPhone

We didn't have anything to worry about, but back then Apple had decided that 3rd party apps were a bad thing and web apps were best for everyone. Read the rest here
