Genome MIDI Sequencer 2.0 arrives

Well there you go, you wait for ages and then two come along all at once! Today Genome 2 arrives, and the 2.0 update in the app store doesn't really do it justice:
  • New 'longest pattern' song mode
  • New Instrument Rack with built in instruments and effects
  • Audiobus
  • Fixed hanging notes issue on pattern switch
  • Dozens of internal fixes
  • A Metronome
  • Usability improvements to the pattern editor

Also, here's what White Noise Audio have to say about it ...

"Grab the latest update in the app store! As always, please report any issues with the new version. If you have valuable work, please back it up first. This new verison changes a few things with the file format and you may not be able to use new songs on older versions of Genome should you need to downgrade.

This was a large update - future updates should be smaller and more frequent. We plan on focusing on ease of use in the pattern editor and new instruments for the Instrument Rack for the next set of updates."

So it'll be interesting to see what comes next for Genome ...

KORG Module 1.1 is features and fixes

Here's what's new in KORG Module 1.1:
  • Now supports MIDI Channel Change.
  • Now supports Global Transpose.
  • An issue that caused an unnecessary backup of "Ivory Mobile Grand" and "Wurley Electric Piano" in your iCloud is now fixed. Please ensure that you remake your iCloud back up in the iOS settings after updating.
  • Other improvements have been made to enhance stability.

Well done Artiphon, well over the $1m mark and still got 2 weeks to go!

I had no doubt that Artiphon's INSTRUMENT 1 would easily clear the $1 million mark, and they have. They've still got 2 weeks to go on Kickstarter, so I think they'll do even better. $2 million?

Maybe ...

Music IO: Audio and MIDI over USB 1.1 arrives

Here's what's new in Music IO: Audio and MIDI over USB:

Version 1.10 brings audio over USB! With Inter-App Audio support built in, you can host synthesizer and effect apps within Music IO, and send the audio to a Mac with amazingly low latency. All audio data is transmitted in 32-bit floating point, so there's no degradation of sound; what your Mac receives is crystal clear.

Music IO integrates both audio and bi-directional MIDI functionality into a single app. It's simple, easy-to-use, and better yet: one app means less processing and memory demands on your iOS device. This lets you use more instruments, create more complicated sounds, and add more (and more sophisticated) effects.

synth-Q 1.0.2 brings fixes and improvements

Here's what's new in synth-Q:
bug fixes:
  • fixed IAA issues
  • fixed Core MIDI issues courtesy of MidiBus by Nic Grants
  • fixed preset export bug
  • fixed issues with stuck notes

improvements
  • added IAA Instrument MIDI support and transport controls
  • additional MIDI control support (sustian pedal, program/bank change)
  • added more info to subject lines for preset or recording e-mails
  • osc coarse number box range increased to +/- 36 semitones
  • added 64-bit support
  • CPU improvement
  • improvements in preset menus

Borderlands Granular 2.0 is here at last

We've waited so long, and at last it has arrived. Here's what's new ...

New Features:
  • Audiobus Sender, Filter, and Receiver support
  • AudioShare import and export
  • Real time audio input recording and granulation
  • Gesture recording and looping for cloud parameters and positions
  • Save and load "scenes" - presets of clouds, sounds, and automation
  • Resonant filters for each grain cloud with per grain randomization
  • ...and much more!

Bugfixes:
  • Fixed common sources of crashes on launch.
  • Better sample import options
  • Better performance, hardware accelerated audio
  • Support for external audio interfaces
  • Improved memory handling
  • Multiple sample rates and buffer sizes supported
  • Interface rotation supported
  • File sharing enabled

Liptikl, a new creative app from Intermorphic for working with text

Add text. Cut-up. Ready to use. This creative writing tool can help you come up with new and exciting word arrangements. If you write song lyrics, music lyrics, rap lyrics or any kind of lyrics then Liptikl and its cut-up approach might unlock cool new ideas for you. If you write copy, ads, haikus or poems, or even if you write at all, it could be just what you are looking for to spark something original and different.

The cut-up process is a powerful technique for stimulating creative writing. The random word associations Liptikl comes up with can give you new options to consider, bringing extra advantage & fresh ideas to explore.

USER REVIEWS
  • "I used Liptikl extensively while writing lyrics for my last album and found it incredibly useful", "Liptikl is the key to unlocking word combinations and mental scenery"

WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH LIPTIKL
  • Help unblock writer's block
  • Mash together up to 5 different bodies of text
  • Easily come up with new and exciting word arrangements
  • Get more ideas for music or rap lyrics, poems, copy or ads
  • Generate unusual, obscure, non-obvious, ambiguous and unexpected results
  • Randomise only the words you want to, lock the others

HOW TO USE IT
  • Input up to 5 different sources of words, paragraphs or other text material. The input sources could be complete chapters, tracts or paragraphs, news or current affairs, some of your past lyrics or writing, or even collections of your favourite words. Liptikl uses in-built rules to generate cut-up word arrangements from these.
  • Decide how you want the word output to look in terms of length and lines.
  • Create a cut-up to mix the words together, then customize and edit them to get your output.
  • 'Lock down' the words or arrangements that you like and use Liptikl to try other words in the unlocked positions.
  • Optional: Add favourite words to your own User Library and then choose how to blend those in with the other source material.
  • Tip: Files created in Liptikl Mobile can also be opened and used in Liptikl Desktop (available for purchase separately).

Example 1: Come up with something completely new. Try mixing a Shakespeare sonnet with some Tolstoy and then add in some show news story or headline.

Example 2: Start from something, and work around it. Load up some of your own writing and favourite words, and then let Liptikl replace certain words with those from your source material.

COPYRIGHT
If you use Liptikl to come up with something you like, make sure that it does not infringe the copyright of any of your source material. Liptikl is pretty good at creating random "word cut-ups", but it is just a tool for you to use to generate ideas. It is ultimately your responsibility to make sure you are not infringing anyone else's copyright.

Liptikl costs $2.99 on the app store, click below ...

So this started out as a 4 bar ielectribe pattern that I fed into sector, resulting in a 32 bar pattern with a fair amount of variation but not so much as to be bizarre - in fact unless you are listening carefully your brain tends to assume you are listening to something much more predictable. Added SFX from Alchemy and a but from Animoog, then some pads from Z3ta last night and finally some vox from the late great Christopher Hitchens. I have been striving for a little more minimalism in my pieces, and while this is not quite there yet it is a lot more sparse than some...

I've been missing for a bit, needed a bit of a break from noise whilst I was busy with life stuffs. I've not been inactive, theres quite a lot of music clogging up my iPad, so this is the second step toward finishing things up and releasing a load of tunes into the wild. I am also working on a new E.P. and something super-special with Julianna - so expect a fair amount of ear abuse in the coming weeks! This was made in Nanostudio with a supporting cast of Gadget, DM1, TF7, MicroTERA, Addictive and Laplace. Its not mastered yet, straight outta NS Hope you enjoy it!

What's your workflow?

Everyone has a different workflow and a different way of working and getting the sounds you want. So what's yours? How about sharing it and explaining why it works for you? Just get in touch (check the 'about' page) and tell me all about your workflow.

What's your app of the week?

What's the app that's been most useful or the most inspiring this week? Or maybe just the app that's been your work horse for the last few days. Tell me which one it is and why.

I you haven't heard about MicSwap Pro, then you really need to now

I thought I should put down some thoughts about this app as it's one that may have escaped your attention and it really shouldn't have.

I have to admit to being slightly sceptical about this app initially. It is after all a very impressive idea and quite a task to get that many mics together and properly represent their characteristics. So when I tried it out I wondered if the differences in each would actually be perceptible, or if the mics would largely sound the same but with tiny differences.

I have to admit to being very pleasantly surprised. In fact that statement really doesn't do this app justice at all. I was actually very impressed indeed.

I've been using MicSwap as an IAA in Multitrack DAW to add character to existing vocals. The results are truly excellent. The modelling capability is amazing. Really amazing. The range of different mics that you can access is superb and affords you a really interesting sound palette of ways to alter and improve a vocal. I really didn't think that it was going to be possible but the results were great.

Each mic has a very distinct character and response and the app's UI makes it very easy to swap between them quickly and easily. I guess it would have to with a name like MicSwap! I can see this app becoming one that I use very regularly with all vocal work. It's simple to use yet very powerful indeed, and that makes it an excellent mobile music app in my book, and the fact that it's also universal is even better.

So I'm giving a very firm recommendation to anyone looking for a wide range of mic emulations to try this app out. You can of course use the lite version but I'd say that the full version is well worth the money.

The patching area of TC-11 2.0 is all new, and has some great new features that make programming a patch easier and more responsive.

Don't forget that Laplace is still on sale

Laplace is on sale and down in price by 33% and is down from $5.99 to $3.99. It's on sale until the 29th.

Photophore Synth (video)

Photophore Synth 1.0.2 arrives with lots of goodness:
  • Performance improvements -- up to 15% reduction in CPU usage!!
  • 6 new waveshapes! We’ve doubled the waveshape options, giving you a wide variety of new timbres. Enjoy!
  • Glide: smoothly glide between notes when in monophonic mode!
  • 12 new presets showcasing the six new wave shapes.
  • Added glide to two existing presets: Killer Reese and Mr Legato.
  • Fixed bug where Photophore would go to sleep while Inter App Audio was connected, causing it to disappear in the IAA host.

VividTracker 1.3 arrives

Here's what's new in VividTracker 1.3:

New feature: AutoChord Keys. This is an amazing new feature that adapts the keys to only show the pentatonic scale for the current AutoChord. The last key (blue colour) will show the current chord. This makes it super easy to write music that goes in harmony with the current chord. You turn on AutoChord Keys by pressing the ACK-button on Screen 6.

AudioStretch (video)

Video description:

"AudioStretch is an iOS app created by my friend Gerry Beauregard. He is unusually talented audio programmer. With a AudioStretch he is created something that is unique and powerful. It allows you to slow down audio to an absolute freezing point which can be used as an incredible learning tool as well as an amazing sonic manipulator. Unlike other apps that slow down your music so you can learn it, AudioStretch can slow it down to the point of being still. If that's not slow enough for you, you can also play the audio file in reverse! While it's doing that it can maintain its harmonic quality. Amazing- and it's my pleasure to share it with you as my featured app."

Elastic Drums universal in review ...

"What's new will be in version 1.2? MIDI support, controls mapping, something else?"

Teenage Engineering PO-14

Another lovely device in a lovely little box.

Close up with the Teenage Engineering PO-12

It's a strange little box to be honest. I'm kind of sad to open it up as once you've done that there's no going back at all. You can't put the box back together once it's opened. I suppose that says a lot really.

Anyway, for a little unit I do like the box, even if you do have to rip it open to get in there.

Teenage Engineering PO-12

It really is a lovely piece of hardware.

Wait list updated

I've cleared up the wait list after a while. There's still plenty of stuff to wait for but I've also updated the arrived section in case you missed one of these.

Elastic Drums going up in price soon

I mentioned this yesterday, but it's really worth mentioning again!

Just a reminder that Elastic Drums is currently $7.99 and you should really consider getting it as the price goes up when it goes universal at the end of the month.

Just saying ...

Last call for NanoStudio on sale this weekend

Just one last reminder for this weekend that NanoStudio is still on sale at half. It was $13.99 and now it's $6.99, but for this weekend only, and there's not much left of that now.

PhotoNoise is also free

PhotoNoise (another Nicholas Collins app) is also free although this one has been $1.99 since it first launched, but you can grab it for nothing right now.

Don't forget that NanoStudio is on sale this weekend with 50% off

Just a reminder that NanoStudio is on sale at half for this weekend only. It was $13.99 and now it's $6.99, but for this weekend only.

Voice Jam Studio still on sale

Voice Jam Studio is still back down to its launch price of $9.99. It was $14.99 before this and it's really a bargain, so go check it out.

Different Drummer is still on sale

Different Drummer is still down to $12.99 from its previous price of $15.99. I think that this is the lowest price it's ever been, so for this app $12.99 is a real bargain.

Pleb Zoo by Bernard Flesh

The revenge of the Middle Class was terrible indeed, bound by their own sensibilities they could neither dismantle the welfare state nor impose freedom removing laws. Like it or not they were forced to pay for an underclass of second and third generation unemployed and unemployable people. Goaded on by the Daily Mail and, its like, they were whipped into a rage to realize that their tax pounds were going to people who could and would do nothing for themselves. A class so incompetent that their own lives were completely beyond their capabilities. What could they do? How could they stop this? They couldn't let them starve to death, they couldn't withdraw state aid, they couldn't sterilize them or exterminate them. They stood dumbfounded in rage as their new car was keyed and their shed was broken into. They tutted as vast gangs of plebspawn took over town centre shopping centres. Then they had a brilliant idea. "If we have to pay for them we should get something in return" they said, "we shall make them into our entertainment". Genius! Now the more rubbish and useless the proles are, the more entertaining they are. You have 6 kids by 6 different fathers and you don't know who they are, excellent, come and tell us your story! You got your granddaughter pregnant while you were taking acid together? Marvelous, that should make a great yarn. Come and swear and fight for us, we can laugh at your tracksuits and your hilarious teeth, we can discuss your 600 word vocabulary over dinner, we can properly look down on you in a way that hasn't been socially acceptable in decades. Come scum, dance for us, earn your dole checks, come join the pleb zoo!

Let's get Artiphon's INSTRUMENT 1 over $1 million!

Now that Artiphon's INSTRUMENT 1 has been on Kickstarter for a week it seems like a great idea to post about it again. I can't believe how well they've done. Actually I can. It's great to see.

I'd love to see them get over the $1 million mark. I'm pretty sure that they will.

New version of SeekBeats coming!

Soulsby Synths and DREAMTRAK live!! (video)

Strangely I was only thinking about Soulsby Synths just the other day and wondering what he was up to. Now I know. I'm hoping for more news on Soulsby Synths soon too.

Video description:

"Live at the SWIM DEEP X CONVERSE PARTY in London 17th March 2015
Features 2 live Atmegatrons and an Ableton mix consisting mainly of Atmegatron sounds.
The jam is essentially a mash up of the DREAMTRAK Atmegatron demos, which can be heard here: http://bit.ly/1luQyRy
Annoyingly the camera ran out of battery half way through, so I've edited together a montage of the limited amount of phone media I had.
Kit:
2 Atmegatron (1 loaded with Atmegatron software and 1 with Delayertron software)
Novation Launchpad
Ableton"

Old Grit - A Collection of Filthy Patches for the iVCS3 - patch demo (video)

Video description:

"I'm giving away a library of presets I made for the iVCS3. This collection embodies my love for imperfect, dirty, slightly ugly sounds that are both edgy and warm reminiscent of old tape recordings. Some presets are variations of one matrix patch, and not entirely unique, created for the convenience of switching from tone to tone without dialing in different settings each time. Don't forget to read the performance notes to get a better understanding of each patch's controls. Have fun and go crazy with it! Drop me a line if you find these patches useful in any way.

Disclaimer: Some patches are softer than most. When using these super soft patches, please do not forget to turn down your device's output volume before switching to the next patch. This would prevent damage to your hearing and/or equipment. Use these patches at your own risk. I shall not be held liable for any damage to property or hearing resulting from the use of these patches. Safety first! The iVCS3 can get very loud in an instant. Keep your device's audio output at moderate levels."
