iPhone App Directory

And finally ...

So I just thought I'd say a final thank you for May, for Palm Sounds 8th birthday, to everyone who's taken part, all of the numerous developers who have put apps on sale and given away promo codes. I'd also like to say thank you to everyone who's tweeted about the birthday, or posted about it or anything inbetween.

It's been a great month and I've had a load of fun too. I hope you've enjoyed it and got a bargain or two.

Thanks again!

All the codes have now gone out

Once again, a big thank you to everyone who entered the give away, and thanks to the very kind developers who put their codes out. All of the codes have gone out now and this is the last give away for this month.

And the song contest is closed as well

I'll be picking the winning entries tomorrow. Thanks to everyone who entered. The quality of the tracks was amazing! If you win I'll be in touch soon.

Happy Friday (Testing) from Yonac Software

Yonac Software testing out their latest app, ToneStack, coming soon ...

Well that's the last promo code give away for the month

Thanks to everyone who entered the promo code give away. A really big thank you to the developers who have supported this give away. The codes will be going out in the next hour.

Gakken SX-150 Analog Synthesizer (video)

Always meant to get one of those, but I've never got around to it.

StepPolyArp (Midi Step Polyphonic Arpeggiator) update

StepPolyArp - Midi Step Polyphonic Arpeggiator makes a little update:
  • Adding Midi control 21 to change the pattern in addition to the existing program change
  • Bugs fixed

Any last tracks to go into the Song Contest?

I'm just checking in case anyone has submitted a track to the Palm Sounds group but hasn't tagged it with "PSAT8". If you think that might be the case with your track, please tag it and let me know as soon as you can!

Don't forget that bip sale and synthmate being free end today ...

bip is down to $0.99 on the app store, but will go back to its normal price tomorrow.

Also synthmate is free for now.

Thanks to IceGear

I'm a long time IceGear fan, especially of their first app Argon. They gave away codes for Palm Sounds 8th birthday celebration. So a really big thank you to them for all their support.

Reactable supported Palm Sounds birthday

It was great to have Reactable on board for Palm Sounds birthday celebration. They're doing so many interesting things with their technology, like their new object store on their app, and especially their new Reactable Everywhere, which I'm really looking forward to.

And a big thank you to Alex for all his support

Alex put his excellent apps on sale for Palm Sounds birthday. His first app GlitchBreaks was a really interesting departure when it arrived on the app store, but his latest app, Sliver has really caught people's attention and offers up some tremendous sonic possibilities.

So a big thank you to Alex, please keep on innovating!

Casual Underground made Loopseque

Casual Underground also supported Palm Sounds birthday with a day long sale. But this is no big surprise as they've been a long time supporter and also helped support the SoundLab project I worked on last year.

So a big thank you to Casual underground. I hope that their excellent Loopseque app continues to be developed as I think it's one of the best apps for non-musicians to engage with.

Apollo MIDI over Bluetooth Free arrives

A free version of Secret Base's Apollo MIDI app arrives. Here's the difference between the free and the paid versions:

"Apollo MIDI over Bluetooth provides low latency MIDI connections between two iOS devices, or an iOS device and a Mac. This version is free, with connections limited to 5 minutes; this should be plenty of time to evaluate the speed, and determine if the app works on your equipment. If you like it, you can upgrade to the full version, which has no limit on connection times!"

  • Inter-app Audio : Use TF7 as an instrument in Cubasis and other DAWs. Freeze your TF7 track in Cubasis to save CPU!

  • Directly modify modulation values by pressing on the number itself for fine modulation adjustments

Fixes:
  • TF7 now syncs with Cubasis MIDI Clock
  • Improved reliability of TF7 keypad
  • Miscellaneous bug fixes

Palm Sounds Song Contest Entry: Grain Bastard - Portable Glitch (Palmsounds.net 8th Birthday Celebration) by Punisha

Description:

"My Track to celebrate the superb www.palmsounds.net reaching 8 years of broadcasting :)

Reading your posts has become part of my daily routine, so thank you for making it interesting.

Anyway, I sampled various apps making sounds themed around palmsounds - ie I used virtual-ANS and a screen dump of the palm sounds logo to make a lot of drones and drum sounds for the OP-1. I also sampled VOX 3000 voice synth via my iOS Zoom mic for extra 'spirit of the event' by keeping things portable.

After a bit of fun writing 'palm' and 'sounds.net' into Sketch on the OP-1, I ended up with a whole crazy mess of sounds on the 4-track which I transferred to the ipad and tried to mix it in Auria - The resultant audio got hammered by a selection of inbuilt Auria 'plugins' such as Fabfilters microfilter and Sugerbytes WOW.

I don't have an iOS mastering app so I did my best polishing with Auria's master channel plugins. Would normally mix and master in my DAW, so it was a learning exercise which turned out to be great fun.

Happy belated birthday palmsounds :)"

Palm Sounds Song Contest Entry: Million Dollar Bill by MaxtonX

Description:

"A real tear jerker this one.

I started in Garageband playing piano in my boxers via Audiobus and a midi keyboard and recognized a little pattern I was playing. I originally had the reverse guitar solo from Jamup Pro that i cut because I just wasn't feeling it and was running out of time. For the vocals, I used Audiobus w/ Audioreverb to give the vocals a decent amount of reverb (slapback hall preset) and Garagebands built in compressor. From there I used Finaltouch to do the very bare mastering that I know how to do and then shot that into Audioshare.

This is the first "traditional" style song I've recorded on IOS and I'm still fleshing out an all ipad album thats almost as dance-y as this track.

goodnight everyone. don't forget to check for ticks."

Recording Clean Guitar DI's in Cubasis (video playlist)

Video description:

A brief tutorial from Augustine Ortiz, Jr. on how to record DI tracks while monitoring through your favorite amp simulator software.

Often when recording guitar's you need to keep DI tracks for re-amping or mixdown later. Maybe send them to a mixing engineer or import them into your main DAW. Here is one way to get that done.
  1. Part 1: Inputs and setup of Cubase, AudioBus and JamUp.
  2. Part 2: Importing external tracks and tracking over them.
  3. Part 3: Exporting your recorded tracks.

Looking good for Audulus 2.8

OT: Last chance to grab NI's Reaktor for 70% off

I mentioned it yesterday, and I know it isn't mobile related (although one day I hope it will be), but I really couldn't let a deal like this go by without letting you know again. Reaktor from Native Instruments is 70% off at the moment. So in the UK that's down to £89 from a normal price of £339.

List of iOS Compatible Audio Interfaces updated

List of iOS Compatible Audio Interfaces has been updated. You can find the list here, care of Audio Mastering Studio.

Did you know that June the 21st was Make Music Day?

Well I didn't, but it strikes me that we should do something to celebrate the fact, especially in the mobile music world where it is so easy to make music in so many different ways. I only found out from NAMM's press release here.

So, any suggestions?

Gestrument Research (video)

Video description:

First steps with the iOS app Gestrument being controlled by visual tracking of juggling patterns with a Kinect 360 camera. This work was a proof of concept- future refinements will include advanced calibration and appropriately tuned presets to find matching aesthetics between the audio and visuals.

This is interesting stuff ...

reSonare recording studio adds URL sharing

I find this app reSonare quite intriguing. The developer contacted me a little while ago about the app and since then I've been waiting for the right opportunity to try it out in the field, but finding the right moment isn't easy though.

What I'd like to do is make a side by side comparison with FIRe, my regular recorder, and see how the two compare. So as soon as I can organise that, I'll let you know.

For now, here's what's new with reSonare recording studio:

"Added URL Sharing protocol and enhanced 'Send to' function. Now you can export and share your audio files to other apps inside your phone... even your mp3 to Telegram, or Whatsapp!!!"

Voco is on the bus

Amazing. I'm not sure I noticed this app when it first came out, and now it's on the bus. So, as I did miss it, here's the app's full description:

Voco is a touch-controlled phase vocoder for manipulating sampled sound.

The sound is mapped onto the screen, with time running left to right, and pitch up and down. By touching the screen the sound can be manipulated and played like an instrument.

Sounds can be sampled from the microphone, via Audiobus, or loaded from iTunes or AudioCopy.

Voco is priced at $4.99.

What's your workflow?

Everyone has a different workflow and a different way of working and getting the sounds you want. So what's yours? How about sharing it and explaining why it works for you? Just get in touch (check the 'about' page) and tell me all about your workflow.
