Microsoft Announces Surface 2 "Remix Project" with MPC Style Control Pads

I really don't know what I think about the Surface. It looks like an interesting direction, but I guess the most important thing will be whether or not developers start to get behind the Surface as a platform for music. Without that it'll go nowhere.

But I don't need to tell you this do I?

  1. Personally, I've got to give Microsoft a lot of credit for coming up with something unique. They are in an impossible position when facing both Apple's incredibly popular products as well as Android's price point.

I own a Windows tablet running full Windows 8. I really appreciate being able to run my favorite graphics programs on a Wacom-enabled tablet. The new "Start" screen works well, if you take the time to learn how to use it.

However, the "Desktop" side suffers because legacy programs aren't written to take advantage of a touch interface. The Surface RT product line only runs apps and a special version of Office that Microsoft offers.

Interchangable covers is certainly a novel approach that sets Microsoft apart from their competitors. I really like the concept of snapping the tablet into a cover that offers MPC-style controls, or a keyboard interface, or even templates for Photoshop.

Interchangable covers is the kind of "out of the box" thinking that might win the Surface product line some converts from iOS or Android. Hopefully these covers are relatively inexpensive but I suspect they will sell at the same price point as the current covers, which are quite expensive.

If Microsoft were smart, they'd offer a Musician's bundle; a Surface 2 or Pro with a custom cover. They could do the same for artists by having a cover with user assignable areas for keyboard shortcuts and keystrokes. The user can then purchase a touch keyboard cover if they really need one later.
