Lots more rumours seem to be popping up about a possible new Amazon tablet with 'analysts' claiming that it will be a real competitor for the iPad. One interesting part of the rumour mill on this tablet is that it could retail for just $299, which would be great.
So Amazon already gave up trying to convince people with superior design and content since they had to play the price card?
ReplyDeleteCan you say 'cheap'?

ReplyDeleteWho said superior design and cheap have to be exclusive?
A cheap tablet could do a lot of what people want it for (web browsing, movies, ebooks). The question is: can a usable tablet be manufactured cheaply? We'll get there eventually, but I doubt we're there yet, technically. Amazon could lower the price by subsidizing its cost (like cell phone carriers), but for that to work they've got to make a fat stream of app/ad/or media sales later.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, Apple will solidify its hold on the market for prosumer music apps.
"The question is: can a usable tablet be manufactured cheaply?"
ReplyDeleteThe answer is YES!
But the real question is : would stores sell it?
I can't count how much sub-200$ tablet models exists right now (Nook, Archos, Asian market tabets, you could even count older ipad, got mine at 225$), but they are nowhere to be found in stores. Stores would rather sell you a 500$ tablet.
At the moment, none of these tablets have any decent apps, so it doesn't matter how good they are or if they are competitive; competitive in what sense, the price? Doesn't matter how cheap they are at the moment or because they've got flash, or can do multitasking, or have a camera, or two? MEH. I look forward to these platforms having the same dev network, but until then......keep watching the skies!
ReplyDeleteThe os and it's capabilities will decide If it's a competitor. For me I'd music wise google need to sort the latency. There's seems more scope to experiment with apps on iOS. I saw a video of Bada os running mixxx and that made me stand up and take notice. I can see this from a music point of view as we are on a music blog and that I bought an iPad to use in my studio. The only tablet I would replace this with is the iPad 2. Having said that I did consider a hp touchpad for the ridiculous cheap price but even then I dont need it.
ReplyDeletegeez people, the price is a RUMOR. It might not even be true... why does everyone think they can predict 10 additional steps into the future when the premise is not even established?
ReplyDeleteAccording to http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/08/31/uk-hp-touchpad-idUSLNE77U02K20110831, the parts in the recently canceled HP tablet cost US$318.
