Ratatap Drums - the best drumming app for iPhone/Retina/iPad!
I don't normally put up straight drum playing apps, but this one seems to have a lot more to it.
The app features new ways to play the drums, ten drum kits included, plus you can edit and create new drumsets. The app is force sensitive, so that the harder you tap a drum, the louder it sounds. You can do drum rolls of varying speed by dragging your finger around, and the sound blends smoothly and realistically so you don't get a machine-gun effect. Cymbal hits blend smoothly together. The drums are animated, responding to user's touches: cymbals swing, bass drums pulse, hihats bounce.
In Ratatap Drums, you can create your own drums, drumkits, even record your own drum sounds. Pinch and pull to make drums bigger or smaller. Rotate them with multitouch gestures.
Multitrack recording and sharing performances is included, too. We've even built a web player that can play the performances made on the iPad, so you can tweet a performance and share it.
The app is priced at $1.99 and there's a free version available too.
No audiocopy / paste?
ReplyDeleteUh-ohhhhhh.......
The drumroll gesture is nice.
ReplyDeleteI don't care much about audiocopy. Its handy right now because its the only way to transport audio from app to app, but its going to be obsolete as soon as Apple introduces CoreAudioCopy (or something similar).
Sooner or later Audiocopy will go the same way as IOlibrary. If you remember, it was barely over a year ago that Apple forced IOlibrary to be removed on every apps.
http://the-palm-sound.blogspot.com/2010/01/iolibrary-being-removed.html
Unless, however, I don't update my iOS, which I haven't, then Audiocopy is still a good idea.
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime, transferring patterns from this app is a "no can do".
ReplyDeleteHow is that helpful?
I'd like audio copy paste and midi export on this so I can remove accidental notes after recording.
ReplyDeleteother than that it's pretty sweet!
@Icepulse
ReplyDeleteIt might come later with an update, give it some time. Most audio apps are launched without Audiocopy, I can guess the following success of an app (or lack of) might influence its devs to integrate Audiocopy later.
And if it doesn't come up, well.. too bad..
Got it, played it, love it. Definitely the best drumset app so far, better than Garagebands drums IMO. Audiocopy is missed, and a few other features, but for a first version of an app, it's pretty deep. I love how you can tweak the sounds, record your own in-app, edit the sets and customize settings. And the feel is great, no latency + the roll feature is fun. I miss some kind of quantize setting when recording and being able to edit the steps in a recording, but hopefully it will come. For the price, it's a steal! There's also a free version available with ads.
ReplyDeleteNot including some kind of pasteboard because, one day who knows when, it may be obsolete is a ridiculous reason.
ReplyDeleteNo MIDI i/o/sync for an app like this is nothing short of RETARDED.
ReplyDeleteffs. Another dev who just doesn't get it.
How cool would it have been to record MIDI into Ableton Live with audio out via the external instrument plug? You could have then build up tracks on the fly..
Retarded.
@loopstationzebra
ReplyDeleteHave you noticed the sentence just behind the post comment command? If so, you should read it one more time...
Alas, "offensive" is pretty subjective, and just about ANY remark could be regarded as offensive to someone. I assume the label "offensive" needs to be assigned to only the most out-and-out abusive remarks.
ReplyDeleteLoopstationzebra just said what most of us were thinking.
well the word retard makes me think about that guy here that licks his own chin while picking up stuff from the street and putting it in the mailbox
ReplyDeletenot about a dev leaving a feature out
You're projecting!
ReplyDeleteForgot to comment about the app BTW, I gave the free version a try, seems pretty cool. I will probably buy the full version. Yes, it totally lacks audio copy/paste. It's a bummer we always have to beg for it. I'll maybe wait for it to be included, if ever, to buy the payed version: I paid for Improvox, and many others, thinking if it included a recorder then it would end up having audio copy/paste... For sure was I retarded wishful thinker, never occured to me to think the dev was the retard though.
ReplyDeleteNot having a true unified copy/paste solution in IOS is retarded, just like expecting a 2$ app to be fully featured on the first day of its release also is.
ReplyDeleteHey, maybe it should also have a piano roll?, and record incoming audio in multi-track?, and be able to apply effects too? in real time? Maybe be able to sync multiple ipads together with MIDI?, all for 2$? C'mon get real guys, do you also expect a 50$ Casio keyboard to have all the features of a Moog?
Also it shouldn't be the job of the apps to create methods for copying/pasting. Mobile OSes could do it before IOS, why can't IOS do it properly?
You're right, Johnny. How silly to expect a music app to have the most widely requested feature in a music app. Why aren't you running Apple yet? I don't care if it's two dollars. There are dollar apps, music and otherwise, that come with great features out the box. Get real.
ReplyDelete@johnnyg0
ReplyDeleteYou don't piano roll, incoming audio / multi-track recording, or real-time effects if you have audiocopy /paste. That's the point. It's not "full-featured" to have this functionality; it's a basic must-have. W/ it, it's part of a toolkit. W/o it, it exists in a vacuum in your device.
don't "need", I mean.
ReplyDelete@Jaybry84
ReplyDeleteWait, maybe he IS running Apple!!
GB for iPad w/ promised GB desktop compatability that doesn't exist, and makes no excuse?
Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.
ReplyDeleteMy definition of offensive and spurious in our context is an application that doesn't meet state of the art standards and/or has flaws and limitations. Have no time for that.
Appreciate the helpful warnings here. Now I can move on and not waste my time downloading and traipsing through the thing only to be disappointed.
@Jaybry84
ReplyDelete"How silly to expect a music app to have the most widely requested feature in a music app."
Most requested features amongst musicians maybe (and Palm Sounds readers certainly), but the general public doesn't care much about Audiocopy.. and you know who buys drum apps the most? Hint : not musicians.
You guys are really spoiled if you believe every 2$ apps should have every features out of the box.
Yes there are 1$-5$ apps that have great features, but how many apps support Audiocopy? About 70 or so they say on the Sonoma website. While its a good number, 70 is still a very small number compared to the totality of audio/music apps that exists on the IOS platform.
Only Apple has the power to implement a real universal copying/pasting solution, and they will eventually. Sadly for Audiocopy, they will get the axe when that happens (like IOlibrary and every other similar solutions before), and every apps that uses it will have to remove this feature. I can understand devs not wanting to get involved with temporary solutions like this one (but I'm not saying they shouldn't use it).
In 2011, you can't do universal copying/pasting in IOS, and you guys blame applications developers for not implementing a third-party solution on a 2$ app? ... yeah that's what it looks like, correct me if I'm wrong.
@Icepulse
I really don't see how Audiocopy can replace a piano roll.. :P
@Mididog
ReplyDelete"My definition of offensive and spurious in our context is an application that doesn't meet state of the art standards and/or has flaws and limitations. Have no time for that."
Hey its exactly how I feel about IOS and its restrictions on how users can access their own files. Being denied access to our saved files, and not even having the rights to create a folder on the desktop and drop files inside of it on IOS is just plain retarded. But does that mean its completely useless? (no its not)
@johnnyg0
ReplyDelete"I really don't see how Audiocopy can replace a piano roll.. :P"
Well, then your problems run even deeper than I thought.
:p :p :p
@Icepulse
ReplyDelete"Well, then your problems run even deeper than I thought."
??.. you mean.. you truly are able to.. think?.. color me surprised! :D
As magical as it is, Audiocopy is simply not a piano roll/notation/grid replacement (do you really know what a piano roll is?)
I know what it is, hammer.
ReplyDeleteAll I'm saying is that, yes, editing notes on a PR and arranging parts into complete songs is all very well, but then what? You're left alone w/ your funky beat.
At least w/ AC/AP, you can create a 8-32 bar rhythm, then paste it into a DAW app w/ more flexibility, (a la NanoStudio)wherein you can add synths, bass parts, etc.
I'm beginning to wonder just how much YOU really understand about a piano roll, or any other facet of production!!
@Icepulse
ReplyDeleteYou at 3:15 PM

You have just contradicted yourself. What was your point again?... oh yeah, that Audiocopy could replace a piano roll.. then you backed out ... and then you question my knowledge of music production?.. classy.
Would you pay more than 2$ for that more flexible DAW?

Moron, your syphilitic brain is about as efficient as a football bat.
I never contradicted myself. I said you don't NEED a P/R within a specialized app (e.g. Ratatat) if you have AC/AP, because you can USE AC/AP to transfer your 8-32 bar rhythm (which you can create w/in Ratatat w/o any piano roll)from Ratatat into a competent multitrack DAW!!! What's so f'ing hard to understand?
I don't WANT Ratat to have all the extra BS... I just need to be able to export it's beats into other apps!!
Are you sucking on exhaust fumes?
@Icepulse
ReplyDelete"Moron, your syphilitic brain is about as efficient as a football bat."
There, the argument is closed. I thought you had the brain power to do this without using insults, but I was wrong.
@Icepulse
ReplyDeleteOh one last thing, if "exporting" is that important to you, then maybe you should not be too reliant on a platform that doesn't have such an important feature in its core, unless you are a masochist of course.
retard just means slow,
ReplyDeleteso anything is still possible...
but how do I exactly roll my pianopaste again?
Aww... I was just bein' cute.
ReplyDelete...still retarded.
ReplyDelete...I am still retarded.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to clear two things up. AudioCopy/AudioPaste does not violate any Apple restrictions which is why it has not been shut down like other methods that have existed. Also, AC/AP is not a piano roll and does not try to copy that functionality, it is simply the easiest way to copy and paste audio between apps. Many of the most popular music apps, including apps by Korg, Sound Trends, Frontier Design Group, and other companies are using Audio Copy + Audio Paste.
ReplyDeletecan somebody please tell me how to adjust the reverb level?
ReplyDeleteTHANKS!
I have tried this drums app and it got me confused at first. Btw, I am just starting to learn to play the drums.Anyway, I continued fiddling with this app and it was actually pretty easy to play with. Spent a lot of time making some noises, banging drums here and there. Very useful, too. I love how it features new ways to play drums.
ReplyDeleteHi. Why doesn't this app make... ANY sound. At all.
