How long before we see iPad 2 only apps?

I wonder how long it will take before iPad 2.0 apps start turning up? Or am I wrong about this one? I just remember that it didn't taken long for apps to be 3GS only or with limited functionality on 3G.

So will the same thing happen with the new iPad 2 and the A5 processor?

  1. There have been very few apps that I haven't been able to use on my iPod Touch 2G.

I can't speak for developers but I'm assuming that Apple suggests on some amount of backwards compatibility so that most users of a specific platform can join in the fun.

If anything, a limited usability will likely be the option for most apps. Garageband may well work on the 1st version iPad but with fewer tracks for instance.

Yeah, I don't remember not being able to use apps until I had to wait for the iPhone4 to release in Australia. I would've thought it'd be the same 12 month wait when there'll be a major update...

naw I don't see that happening. I think all app makers will decide they'll support the 1st gen platform forever.

The question should be : How many devs will be careful to not release apps that would only work on the ipad2. Can their software take advantage of the second core on that new processor and still be compatible with the older devices?

I have a feeling Apple didn't put in more RAM in the ipad2 for the same reasons, they know devs would start using it and it would annoy users who bought their ipad1 less than a year ago because their device wouldn't be compatible with newer apps.

  5. I believe it has double the ram to 512mg like the present iphone.

Sure there will be apps that will work faster with the new processor and ram. I think the worry will be greater next year when the specs will be high enough that it will not be backward compadable. Like Beatmaker 2 is now for the older iOS devices.

  6. fwiw, iMovie for iPad is already v2 only.

But then it would be because there is no camera in the 1st version.

As for ram, there were various sites out there who predicted very accurately that the iPad would arrive with everything that has now been confirmed. Apple never tell you how much RAM is in their machines, during their keynotes, but the prediction was for 512mb- same as the iPhone 4. We'll have to wait until the teardown's to appear. But I'm sure it'll be 512.

The fast pad will probably mean more to gaming developers over the next few months than music. That includes the gyroscope.

  8. We will add iPad 2 dual core support for SynthTronica and future releases. The original iPad will remain supported for our next several new app releases.

SynthTronica will support iOS 3.x for the next couple updates (I am writing this on a 3.2 iPad), but we will move to iOS 4.x only releases soon.

  9. The dual core A5 means a lot to this music developer. I am fairly confident that SynthTronica's polyphony will double on the iPad 2.

What does increased polyphony, beyond, say, 32 note mean for i OS musicians? Is the rest of what can be played by hand just for layering?

Also, SynthTronica is an amazing app and is becoming one of my favorite sample manipulation tools already. Are you going to implement AudioCopy in the future?

    but will it blend?

memory (from teh corners of my miiiind..etc) is the biggest thing for music; processor(s) speed for games

so, imho, you will get iPad2 only apps just 'cos there are a lot of crap developers who have no idea about mathematics and code optimisation insofar as apps will be "iPad2 only" due to their own short-comings

generally, this is the case: poor maths=poor developers; stuff will work but s-l-o-w-ly

i remember schooling (in the 90s) a (now) major player in 3d tv in sinh and cosh functions...basic sums not even maths but still, this is what the end user has to deal with...much like "i've got 'puter and a hack of [insert chosen daw here most likely FL] so therefore i am a 'producer'"

quite a reasonable analog of the 'music' that gets posted on this blog (no offence but it is (mostly) unlistenable crap

I can answer this one. I can only play 4 notes on SynthTronica and would certainly appreciate another 1 or 2. The app does currently seem to be working at the edges of the system and I can't even keep another music app open while using SynthTronica. This will make it tricky to use live - but won't stop me.
