iSyn: First Look

Ok, I've played with it for a bit now, and I have to say that I am impressed. I've found the work flow and the interface to be perfectly usable, and the sound quality to be excellent. No polyphony as yet, but I understand they're working on it.

For £2.99 and a footprint of only 5.5mb this is an amazing little app. Sound wise it makes me think of Griff, although it is nowhere near as complex, but I can imagine it growing, and I hope it does. The synthesis is very straightforward, and they've made the control options work intuitively.

Overall, I like this app alot, I think it points to where this platform can go in terms of music.

  1. Can you record data to the sequencer by playing in real time? The first review in the iTunes Store says that this is possible, but I could not find information about this in the documentation.

  2. Unfortunately, I have to post again in order to sign up for email notification of follow-up comments. I guess this is a Blogger limitation.

  3. No, there's no direct recording options. Notes are entered only through the piano roll pattern sequencer (16 steps per pattern). Very cool app, the separate auto panning xy controllers for each synth and drums are especially nice.

  4. But you can jam over one seq and the drum machine. No direct input as yet.

  5. Worth the wait! Definiteley loads of potential improvements (the above mentioned direct recording for example) and I hope patch and song sharing is forthcoming. But as a first release this is great. So much good stuff available now. When will Griff make the jump do you reckon?

  6. I don't know about Griff, I've mentioned it to Daniel a few times now, but I don't think that they can see how viable it would be for them.

I'd love to see Griff on the iPhone, but at the moment I can't see it.
