iOS8.4 is here, anyone having issues for mobile music apps?

As always I'm slightly reticent about updating straight away, but it's usually ok for a point release. But I thought I'd ask if anyone has had issues with 8.4 so far? I hoping to hear nothing though.

Noise Synth for iPhone arrives, we love noise

Noise Synth looks interesting, fun I guess. It seems that there used to be a lot more of these kinds of apps around and that they've suffered at the hands of more 'serious' music making apps. Perhaps that's just my perception of how things have changed. Anyway, it's nice to see a new one arrive. Here's what to expect ...

‘Noise Synth’ is an interactive sound application for iOS developed by Mamoru Ichikawa (Interactive Artist). This application generates sounds from random noise by Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) technology. ‘Noise Synth’ supports 3 types of noise source (white, pink and red noise), 44.1kHz sampling rate, 48Hz frequency resolution and 512 band frequency filter.

By touching the filter graph everyone can generate various sounds easily and intuitively from noise like painting a picture. The filter graph values can be increased or decreased automatically, and additionally by tilting the iPhone/iPad everyone can shift or rotate the filter value and frequency through the internal accelerometer sensor. Such an operation enables inexperienced sound generation from noise like a new music synthesizer.

Oh yes, and it's free, although there is an IAP.

Navichord update brings more MIDI goodness

Here's what's new in Navichord:

Added ability to configure and send MIDI control change messages from the piano keyboard. All piano keys become mini XY-pads. Loads of fun with your favourite synths (Gadget, Animoog, NLog, Magellan, etc). Enjoy!

For extra fun:

  • Navichord: Settings, MIDI, ControlY="1 - Modulation Wheel"
  • - map Animoog XY pad
  • Navichord: Settings, MIDI, ControlX=CC75, ControlY=CC76

Auxy: Beat Studio 2 is a step change for this excellent free beat making

Here's the list of what's new in Auxy: Beat Studio ...
  • New synth and effects (partnership with Sonic Charge)
  • New sounds included for free
  • Upload and share links to your tracks
  • New pump feature for "side chain" effects
  • Chromatic editing added in addition to scales
  • Precision editing options now included for free
  • Lots of improvements to design and performance
But I think it's worth looking at a couple of these in a bit more detail:

So Auxy have a new synth and FX partnership with Sonic Charge, that's pretty cool actually and I think we can expect to see more coming from this synth engine in future updates, plus there are new sounds included for free.

Uploading and share links to tracks, now that's a step forward in of itself. I remember asking Henrik, the founder of Auxy about when he was going to start a new SoundCloud. Could this be the start? There's an interesting thought for you.

Now, if you don't know Auxy, go grab it now, you won't be disappointed!

Syntorial for iPad arrives to teach you how to make sounds, it's free, but ...

It's a nice idea, and a free app, but the IAP is a killer at £99.99!

Here's the app's description from the app store:

"Syntorial is the most direct route between hearing a sound in your head and knowing how to bring it to life." - Electronic Musician Magazine

"The most comprehensive and fun tool for learning synthesizer programming, hands down." - Keyboard Magazine

“The best training in synth sound-design we’ve come across. A unique and fun way to train your ears in re-creating synth sounds.” - MusicTech Magazine

Syntorial is video game-like training software, that will teach you how to program synth patches by ear. By combining video demonstrations with interactive challenges, you’ll get hands on experience programming patches on a built-in soft synth, and learn everything you need to know to start making your own sounds with ease.

* Electronic Musician Editor's Choice 2014 *

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Interactive Learning: Syntorial doesn’t just show you how synth programming works. It engages you in Interactive Challenges in which you program patches on a built-in synth. You aren’t just learning how to design sound, you are becoming a sound designer.
  • For Musicians, Not Physicists: Instead of talking about the science and physics behind synthesizers, Syntorial will show you how each control effects sound, as well as when, why and how you would use them when designing sounds. This is information that you can immediately apply to real-life situations.
  • It's All About The Ear: One step at a time, Syntorial trains your ear to recognize how each control shapes and manipulates sound. By the end of the program you’ll be able to take the sounds you hear and re-create them, completely by ear.

LESSON SPECS
  • Challenges: Learn by doing! Complete challenges by programming patches with Syntorial’s built-in synth.
  • Videos: Everything is taught through video demonstrations using the same synth that you’ll use in the challenges.
  • Patches: Program, program, program. After all, that’s what it’s all about, right? By the end you will have programmed tons of patches, from simple to complex, familiar to strange.
  • Quizzes: Multiple choice questions to help you retain and remember everything you learn.
  • On Your Own: Syntorial will give you periodic tasks to be carried out on your own with whatever synth(s) you use.

SYNTH SPECS
  • Subtractive synthesis
  • Three Oscillators (Two with Waveform, Pitch, Pulse Width, and Mix controls, and a Sub oscillator with Waveform and Volume controls)
  • Saw, Pulse, Triangle and Sine waveforms
  • FM knob
  • Noise Oscillator
  • Oscillator Sync
  • Filter (Low, Band and High Pass) with Resonance and Key Tracking
  • ADSR Filter Envelope

  • Unison with Voice, Detune and Spread controls
  • Ring Modulation
  • Distortion, Chorus, Phaser, Delay, and Reverb effects
  • Mod Wheel, Pitch Wheel and Velocity controls
  • Audiobus, Inter App Audio, and Virtual Midi enabled.

FREE VS UPGRADE

The free app comes with the first 22 lessons, as well as Syntorial's fully featured synth (see above). Upgrade to get:
  • All 199 Lessons, including 129 Challenges, 147 Videos, and 706 Patches covering the most common synthesis parameters.
  • Additional Lesson Packs covering Cakewalk Z3TA+ 2 and Minimoog Voyager, each containing 30+ videos. More Lesson Packs planned for the future.
  • Pay once and get access to all of the above on iPad, Mac and PC. Sync your progress across all 3 platforms. Train where you want, when you want, and how you want.
  • Plugin version of Syntorial's synth, Primer. Program, record and play Primer in your favorite desktop recording software. VST (Mac/PC) and AU (Mac).
Personally I think that £100 is too much for the IAP so I'll be passing this one up, but if you do go for it I'd be interested to know what you think of it in terms of value for money.

Remember those MIDI controllers printed on paper, well the same company has this on Kickstarter

So this campaign still has 6 days to go and it's over half way to getting to its target, it's a great idea and a great company, so please consider backing it.

Ok, now there's just a week left to get these deals on the Korg range of apps

Remember that all of Korg's apps are on sale with the prices below available up to the 30th, I thought it was about time for another little reminder.

And lastly, and of course the reason for the whole sale, is the new iM1, which is at its introductory price of $19.99, it'll go up to $29.99 after the 30th of June, as will all of the above.

Now there's an interesting combination of technology ...

A great use of technology and a great bag too

I'm a big fan of Bare Conductive, their TouchBoard, their conductive ink, and of the use of conductive thread too. Especially as I've recently been on workshop using conductive thread in weaving, which was great fun.

This kind of idea really does make music mobile, and very personal too, it gives me lots of ideas as well.

Trope update takes it universal ...

Trope has been given a complete interface redesign for iOS 8. It is now a Universal app, and runs natively on the iPad as well as the iPhone.

NanoStudio on the app store:

So long Sound Trends, it was really great whilst it lasted

It's really sad to see a great mobile music brand go, but these things happen, and it has happened to SoundTrends. I have to say that I'm going to really miss them, their innovating and unique apps broke new ground and set a high bar for the world of mobile music.

So I'm planning to spend some time remembering how brilliant their apps were and celebrating the great things they did rather than getting all mournful about the fact that they've gone. So stop by their site to read the announcement, and remember the good things they did.

Mikme Wireless Recording Microphone has returned ..

Yep, Mikme has returned again this time to Indiegogo, with a new campaign, and in the first 15 hours they've already exceeded 200% of their target! That's truly amazing! It just goes to show that you can revisit a crowdfunding campaign and make it work. I think that's an important lesson to learn here.

Anyway, it's really worth checking out Mikme and you can find the campaign right here.

apeDelay has arrived

apeSoft brings us a new app alongside their already great selections of effects and synths. So here's apeDelay, and here's what to expect ...

apeDelay - Implements up to 2048 Stereo Spectral Delay lines with Feedback. The algorithm is based on the STFT (i.e. Short Time Fourier Transform) analysis/re-synthesis. What's coming in SECTOR

Plan Five by pantsofdeath

So the other week I did a collab with the evil and depraved Bernard Flesh on a track using soundscaper and iElectribe. Yesterday I decided to see what that sounded like slowed down from 87bpm to 5bpm. I liked it and so I recorded a 16 bar loop... which was 12 minutes long. I cut that down to about 4 bars and then added some bassline (120 bpm slowed to 20bpm), Elastic drums at 40 bpm and Stochastic at 80 bpm... Then added some excellent vocals from Plan 9 From Outer Space, long lauded as the worst movie ever made. Finally bunged a couple of Animoog parts over the resulting mayhem and here we are... plan 5 (bpm). I might try the 5 bpm again...

Another day another night by pantsofdeath

I have broken all of my rules recently and have about 8 unfinished tracks lying about in various forms, but that's OK because this was the track I was trying to make - I wanted something with exactly this atmosphere and vibe. Vocal samples from Vincent Price were a joy to work with... what a voice.

Offerings by AngledSocks

I heard a cello performance the other day, I really liked it, I was impressed by it's range of sound from lows to highs and it just inspired me to use it's sound.

What's your app of the week?

What's the app that's been most useful or the most inspiring this week? Or maybe just the app that's been your work horse for the last few days. Tell me which one it is and why.

What's your favourite SoundCloud group?

I've been posting a variety of the SoundCloud groups that I like, but of course I don't know every mobile related group. So, if there are groups that you'd like me to mention or just think are full of wonderful tracks please do let me know.

SidTracker64 for iPad has arrived

SidTracker64 arrives for your iPad, and it looks pretty interesting, but not cheap at all, so take a look. Here are the app's details ...

SidTracker64 is the ultimate chiptune production package tool for the iPad. It emulates the SID sound chip from the dominating home computer of the 80s - The Commodore 64.

Get started immediately with the bundled songs and sounds in various styles, from old skool bleeps n blips to new school with multi speed and advanced table editing. Explore, remix and make new songs based on the old classic c64 game tracks “Commando” by Rob Hubbard or “Blood Money” by Fredrik Segerfalk, and the brand new youtube remix hit of the “True Survivor” Kung Fury soundtrack, all included in the app.

SidTracker64 is a retro-style music creation tool and synthesizer combined with modern features such as midi keyboard and controller input, Audiobus 2 and Inter App Audio for recording in your favourite DAW-app. Midi clock in lets you sync to other apps and hardware drum machines and synthesizers, such as the Elektron Analog Four.

SidTracker 64 can be used for live looping, making complete songs, and the minimum latency makes it suitable for live use. Export your music to Dropbox and e-mail as audio or .sid and even .prg files which you can run on a real Commodore 64.

Editing is based on hands on touch interaction or midi input instead of the hardcore style of direct data editing. Record live to a metronome or input notes step-style. Real SID-composing has never been simpler and more fun!
