Introducing KORG iOS app : AudioPocket for volca sample (video)

I watched this again and just found it so hilarious that I had to post it again. It reminds me of sampling stuff using early hardware like the SK-1.

Joking aside I think that this is really impressive and it makes me want a volca sample a little too much I think.

Phonebloks update - Ara Prototype (video)

If Android starts to get better audio latency then this could be a serious contender for music making if the right sorts of modules appear.

Auxy in the Guardian!

This is impressive stuff. The Guardian talks about Auxy and compares it to a few classy apps, although I was slightly bemused by the reference to Pacemaker DJ.

That's a pretty auspicious start for any app!

In case you missed it, Auxy arrived!

In case you missed it from last night, Auxy has arrived and is free! You can see the video and read about the app in my post from yesterday, or just click below and get it on the app store.

Music Tech Pitch 4.5 details

It's been a while since I've done one of these events so it's great to announce the next Music Tech Pitch which will be on the 11th of December. Tickets and full details are all available here.

Having mentioned Wej earlier I thought this project might also be of interest

It isn't entirely different from what Retronyms are trying to do with Wej.

Thanks to everyone who joined in this discussion about Wej

I'm not sure if Retronyms will see this, but if they do, then they really need to read ALL of the comments in this thread on the iPad Musicians' Facebook group. There's some great feedback on Wej and what people really want from this kind of device.

Only about a fortnight until the London Mini Maker Faire at Elephant and Castle

In just over a fortnight it'll be the London Mini Maker Faire at Elephant and Castle. Tickets are still available, and it is bound to be a great event.

I was at last year's event, which was the first year that it ran and it was excellent. Anyway, full details plus tickets etc here.

MINT.io gets updated, but is it Amidio anymore?

MINT.io gets updated with Audiobus 2, improved UI, and an advanced sequence pattern randomizer, but, it isn't listed as Amidio anymore. Now the developer is listed as Eric Elfner, although strangely in my iTunes it comes up as Amidio again.

Hong Kong Danger Duo EP

Here's an interesing little EP. You might not think that this has an mobile music component to it, but you'd be wrong. In fact the third member of this band (who are a Duo) is in fact an iPad.

Here's what Aaron says about how the iPad is used:

"Through a great deal of trial and error, we discovered ways that I could use my iPad from behind the drum kit to complete our sound. Using a kick drum as a trigger for a vocoder sequence, live looping, and using a percussion pad as a midi controller for various iPad synth basses have been just a few ways we've be able to complete our sound. ALL of the synth and electronics for our first EP were done through an iPad."

The EP can be downloaded at:

Auxy arrives bringing uncomplicated beat making to your iPad

It's great to see Auxy out in the world at last. I've been playing with the app in beta for a long time and I really like just how simple, straightforward and uncluttered the interface is.

It's a really great way to make music.

So here's what you need to know about Auxy ...

Introducing a new way to make electronic music. Create your own drums, bass lines, and synth melodies. Auxy is modern beat making without distractions.

Auxy introduces a new way to make modern music on iPad. With a clean interface, stripped of unnecessary complexity, it encourages users to dive straight into the creative process and explore modern beat making without distraction. With Auxy you create drums, bass lines and melody loops by drawing notes instead of recording instruments in real time. Loops can then be mixed and recorded to create your own beats.

”Creating modern music should be more about music and less about technology” says Henrik Lenberg, co-founder and CEO of Auxy. With co-founder Fredrik Gadnell, he wants to get more people involved in creating modern music styles like EDM, house, and hip hop. “A lot of people would love to make modern music but feel it’s too complicated to get started. Our app removes technical barriers to give everyone a better experience.”

“We were really tired of ‘spreadsheet music making’—where creation feels more like work and complicated tools turn creativity into frustration. Auxy is about making more with less. It’s amazing to see how creative people get when you simplify the experience.”

Let us know what you think via feedback@auxy.co or @auxyco

Auxy is free to download from the app store:

Wej has 10 days left to go

So, Wej has 10 days to go and has reached 35% of it's funding goal. I am curious to understand why though. I would have thought that this would be a product that would resonate with the iOS music community.

So what's missing from it?

AUMI is on sale

AUMI is on sale at half price. It isn't an app that will appeal to everyone though. Here's what it does:

Adaptive Use Musical Instruments (AUMI) software interface enables people who have very limited controlled (voluntary) movement to independently engage in music making.

The Adaptive Use Musical Instruments software interface enables the user to play sounds and musical phrases through movement and gestures. This is an entry to improvisation rather than “hitting the right notes” or playing set pieces of music. Instead, the software uses music as a way for participants to express a range of affects, both by themselves and in response to, or in conversation with, others.

While the AUMI interface can be used by anyone, the focus has been on working with children who have profound physical disabilities. In taking these participants as its starting point the project attempts to make musical improvisation and collaboration accessible to the widest possible range of individuals. This approach also opens up the possibility of learning more about the relations between ability, the body, creativity and improvisation, from within a cultural context that does not always acknowledge or accept people with disabilities.

This iOS version of AUMI runs on devices with front facing cameras, and can run on iPhones (long and short), iPod touches and iPads. A large assortment of sounds can be triggered with configurable amounts of sensitivity. AUMI also can be used as a MIDI controller to access other iOS based synthesizers or external equipment (using the iPad's Camera Connection kit or via Core MIDI over WiFi.)

AUMI captures a record of the movement in the session, which can be exported and turned into reports in a clinical setting.

However, for anyone that this is relevant for the price is down from $9.99 to $4.99.

Back in 2006: Computer music feature on mobile

This was a real first back in 2006. Of course now all the magazines have regular features on mobile apps, but back then it was a bit of an oddity and of course there wasn't a huge amount to talk about either. Read the original post from 2006 here.

So that's how not to do Crowdfunding ... UKCFA event

This was a tough choice. On the this same evening there was the Apple iPad event, a kickstarter event on planning and running a campaign and this event run by the UK Crowdfunding Association. So, which did I decide to focus on? I decided to go to this and I'm really glad I did for lots of reasons which will become clear to you I hope.

It's peculiarly British to have an event that tells you how not to do something rather than how to actually do it. But in fact that's a very useful message. All to often we hear only about the crowdfunding success stories and not about the mistakes people make, where they went wrong, and what they learnt from those mistakes.

Also the crowdfunding world is perpetually dominated by the likes of kickstarter and indiegogo and whilst they're good and useful they only represent a small part of the overall story. There are lots of other crowdfunding mechanisms available and those shouldn't be overlooked.

So what did I learn? Actually a lot. Whilst it is easy to get views on crowdfunding from lots of sites and to pull stats and data from all over the place, nothing beats hearing people talk about their experiences and mistakes. A personal story is worth much more than any number of stats in my opinion.

So here are some of my favourite comments, learning and more from the evening with a little commentary here and there:

From QuidCycle: "Just start now, don't wait until everything is perfect. Don't be insular, and don't believe the hype!" (Me: This is very good advice. Often people do wait until everything is in place, but waiting doesn't always help.)

"Don't create a fake celebrity twitter account to tweet about your campaign, nothing good is going to come out of that!" (Me: It might seem obvious, but people try all sorts of tricks to get noticed. Don't try tricks, be honest)

From CrowdCube: "Prefund your campaign, don't wait until you run out of money" (Me: It might sound strange, but prefunding really helps. We all know how it feels to turn up at a campaign page to see that no one has invested as yet.)

From Seedrs: "Don't crowdfund if you don't want to share your idea!" (Me: Another seemingly obvious comment, but it is important. If your idea is too secret don't share it or find a way to tell people without giving away too much.)

"Don't have a crappy video" (Me: This is a point that comes out a lot. The quality of a main campaign video is crucial and can't be stressed enough. Ideally a a 2-3 minute video is best.)

From BuzzBank: "Don't forget to promote your campaign on your own website" (Me: Another sensible comment, but people do forget.)

"It is as important to be offline as it is to be online. Investors are real people and will want to meet you and talk to you offline" (Me: This is very important for equity crowdfunding. You can be invisible to investors. They need to talk and meet with you.)

"Only 43-44% of campaigns on kickstarter succeed" (Me: It might sound strange, but I can believe this statistic.)

So what does all of this mean for the world of music apps? Well that's a very good question. I often have developers ask me about crowdfunding. It's got a bad name over the last year or two in our community. This is mainly because it is very difficult to actually crowdfund an app without annoying all of your backers and giving away loads of apps for free to people who didn't crowdfund the app in the first place.

But having been to this event it made me realise that there lots of other options available apart from the big too, and people should be looking at everything out there, not just focusing on the obvious.

midiSequencer 1.9 is coming and brings some awesome new feature

Rare Palm i705 on eBay

I already posted this over at Palmorama, but if you're interested in old PDA stuff then this might be worth a look. These old 705's are very rare indeed, but for over £200 I'm not sure it's a bargain really.

PalmOne i705 Wireless Handheld on eBay

In case you missed it from earlier ... Sugar Bytes Halloween sale gives 50% off Wow Filterbox, Thesys, Turnado and Effectrix

All of these are excellent effects apps to have in your iDevice, so well worth grabbing them whilst they're on sale at 50% off.
All awesome apps, but my personal favourite is Effectrix, which I find incredibly useful.

So, what's going on at Amidio?

Amidio tweeted this on Sunday ...

But if you follow the link you'll arrive here, which is, incidentally, where amidio.com will take you anyway. So, what's happening with Amidio? Will we see any more updates, or is that it?

Jakob Haq is now on Patreon

He's been putting in loads of effort recently, so if you want to support him for just $1 a month, head over to his patreon site and sign up.

Glitch1 update arrives

Glitch1 gets an update for iOS8 and AB2, which is the first time it's been updated since February this year. I do wonder if there'll be a Glitch2 at some point.

Now this is taking cross-platform pretty seriously

Waveband is trying to help people with disabilities express themselves through music

Which is an excellent aim in my view. Here's what the app is trying to do ...

Waveband lets people with a wide range of disabilities express themselves musically through movement. By moving an Apple device, users convert motion into the sound of their choice of musical instrument. Users can roll, pitch or turn the device to play a piano scale, shake the device to play a tambourine, and so on. Waveband is completely customizable to ensure that each user's ability to move can be used to best advantage.

WHO IS IT FOR?
Waveband is designed to be used by anyone who wants to express themselves musically through motion with their iOS device (iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad). When used in conjunction with a strap to secure the device to the body, the app can be especially useful to people who have disabilities that prevent them from playing traditional musical instruments.

For example, a client who has some control over his arms could have an iPod Touch attached to his arm with a runner's strap. When the client moves his arm sideways, the device plays a pre-selected scale across several octaves, sounding just like a banjo. Another client with extremely limited control over her movements could even have a device attached to her power chair so that the movement of the chair activates the sound of a piano. A client who experiences spasticity might love to control the tambourine or drums.

KEY FEATURES
  • a wide selection of sounds

  • completely customizable

  • multiple people can play simultaneously on a network

  • compatible with applications such as GarageBand through MIDI output

Clients and their music therapist (or caregiver) can choose: from among 30 instruments; the base key; the scale type; and the type and intensity of movement that will activate the notes. They can change any of these options at any time. In addition, the app includes features for more advanced users, such as MIDI output over WiFi.

SUPPORT
To report a problem with the app, or to make a suggestion about the future development of Waveband, please email appsupport@canassist.ca

CANASSIST at the UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA
CanAssist at the University of Victoria is dedicated to developing customized technologies for people with disabilities. While most CanAssist programs focus on clients in British Columbia, Canada, CanAssist has recently begun making its assistive software technologies more widely available.

And the app is free.

Roland PMA-5 on eBay

The Roland PMA-5 is like one of those evolutionary steps towards mobile music, and I love it for that reason. Not that I use mine much, but I'm glad to have a little bit of history nevertheless.

This one looks quite nice on eBay, and currently is going for a reasonable price too.

Tape OP reviews the iVCS3

It's one of those difficult synths, although in my opinion it's awesome. You can read the review from Tape OP here.

Synthtopia asks ...

A good question in my view, so, where are all of these desktop class music apps, and perhaps more importantly, who's going to make them?

Read the piece over at Synthtopia anyway.

Less than 3 days left to help out the mobile motion film festival

It's good to see that this is now funded, but there's almost 3 days left, so you can still give them a little boost if you want to.

Audulus 2.9 is coming

Reminder: Apps World expo and conference

The Apps World expo and conference isn't far away now. This is probably mainly of interest to UK based developers I would imagine, but you might want to just have a look at what's on in the expo, which is free to attend, and you can find a link to on the Palm Sounds home page. It's right at the top on the right so you can't miss it.

Yay! The littleBits new synth bits will be here before the holidays!

They were promised a long time ago and now littleBits say that they'll be ready to order before the holidays!

I think that these bits, more than any of the others that littleBits have created are going to make the synth kit really come to life. Adding MIDI, CV and audio IO will make a massive difference to using these little devices for sound and music.

Personally, I'm really looking forward getting my hands on these.

Earhoof is at its lowest price to date

I posted this on Saturday, but in case you missed it, Earhoof has dropped to its lowest price so far.

It was previously at $4.99 and has dropped down to $1.99 now. So it's a real bargain for now.

What's your workflow?

Everyone has a different workflow and a different way of working and getting the sounds you want. So what's yours? How about sharing it and explaining why it works for you? Just get in touch (check the 'about' page) and tell me all about your workflow.

I had forgotten that I had this on Bandcamp

So I thought I'd share it again, just in case you hadn't heard it before.
