Remember NOiZE? It's still coming along and we've got a world exclusive opportunity for you to try it out first hand

You'll remember that we've seen a couple of videos of NOiZE from Studio Amplify this summer. The first showing a teaser of what NOiZE could do, and the second showing another interface made with NOiZE. Well after seeing these great videos and the potential that the app has I talked to Studio Amplify about them bringing NOiZE to our SoundLab project, in under two weeks we're bringing NOiZE to the Royal Festival Hall at our Beautiful Octopus Club event on the 6th of September.

On Tuesday we had the first test of the NOiZE interfaces that we'll be using on the  6th. We had a small group or users to try these out and the response was fantastic. An overwhelming thumbs up!

But to give you a balanced view, we did encounter one fairly big problem, and that was that no one wanted to stop playing with NOiZE, all our testers were just having too much fun. But that's a good problem to have.

So after a good couple of hours of testing and finding the obligatory bugs that need squashing we were good to go. NOiZE will be one part of what we've got to show at the Beautiful Octopus Club on the 6th.

You won't see NOiZE in wild before the event, so it really is a complete world exclusive for SoundLab and for the Beautiful Octopus Club.

So if you're in London near the South Bank on the 6th come along. Say hello, and play with NOiZE! It's going to be amazing ...

So you want to make a chiptune

If you were interested in chiptune you should take a read of this article, and in fact the series as a whole, and even if you're not interested in chiptune this is a great write up on Sunvox. You should just check the scores it gets in this review.

So here's a really cheap DSP MIDI Synth Kit you might want to look at

The DSP MIDI Synth is a pretty nice little kit for $30, but when you see that it came from a the MIDI plug it's even more impressive. I know that there will be DIY'ers and makers interested in this.

Gumdrops for iPad arrives

Looks like an interesting development in the drum app space ...

Gumdrops takes your beats to the next level with the power of a 64 track / 32 step sequencer combined with the expressiveness of a hand-crafted instrument.

Features:
  • Inter-App Audio
  • Audiobus
  • AudioCopy/Paste
  • MIDI Clock
  • WIST
  • SoundCloud®

I am a drummer and the idea for Gumdrops came to me when a friend and I were discussing making beats using devices like the Roland TR-808 and the Native Instruments Maschine. Gumdrops exists because tapping out beats on pads in time is very hard to do and programming in steps on a sequencer then playing it back to see how it sounds is boring.

When I'm on a drum kit I can play quarter, eighth or sixteenth notes easily with either of my hands and feet. If you have your right hand holding steady eighths on the hi-hat, introducing your left hand in between produces sixteenths. Then removing your right hand leaves eighths but on a syncopated pattern. This sort of natural pattern adaptation is what makes Gumdrops so revolutionary.

There are eight groups of eight pads on the board. By default, each group is assigned to a single sampled sound. The two pads at the bottom of a group are half notes, then moving up to quarters, then eighths, then sixteenths. The left column of pads is filled with the patterns that would be played by your right hand if you were on a drum kit, and the right column has what would be played by your left hand. Playing both the left and right together produces a pattern twice as fast. You could think of the left column as down beats and the right as up beats. So playing a pad in the right column will sound funky and off beat. Playing a pad in the left column will sound solid and on beat. Making up combinations of different patterns is easy by just tapping multiple pads.

Of course Gumdrops offers so much more than the defaults. You can edit the 32 step pattern on all 64 pads. Set the velocity for each step by just dragging across the pattern with your finger. Assign samples to pads by recording directly or by AudioPaste. You can synchronize with other apps and equipment using MIDI clock. Record and apply effects using Inter-App Audio and Audiobus. Upload your recordings to SoundCloud®.

All product and company names are ™ or ® trademarks of their respective owners. WIST is a trademark and software of KORG INC.

Special thanks to David Demeter of The Drum Lab, Sahir Hanif of Masters of Maple, Brady Drums, and the awesome beta test team.

Gumdrops costs $4.99 on the app store:

NT02 arrive ... NT(noystoise) series novelty synthesizers

Beautiful to look at, nice sounding and a great bit of engineering too. You can find out loads more at the Noystoise site, which is well worth a visit anyway.

In case you missed it, here's the round up from last week

You find the round up from last week right here with all the mobile music news highlights listed day by day.

littleBits vs Breadboarding

An interesting piece by littleBits on the insides of a module. The compare one of their modules to doing the same yourself using a breadboard. The price and time taken figures are quite interesting and really gives you the view on whether you should do this stuff yourself or use littleBits or something similar.

I'd like to see the same done with some of the synth bits too.

Generate your next Music Thing Module with this

You just have to take a look at this page and generate some new modules for your collection. It's pretty awesome.

ToneStack GO for iOS arrives

Yonac brings us ToneStack GO (universal), the freemium version of ToneStack GO. Here's the detail:

ToneStack GO is the ultimate in signal processing: with the largest variety of amps & FX, the latest advancements in modeling technology, and an unbelievably powerful yet simple interface – it simply shreds all the other guys.

Right away, enjoy a classic amp & cab, and 7 meticulously designed FX. Expand to a total of 24 amps & cabs, and 71 FX – the largest collection on iOS.

Thanks to ToneStack GO's state-of-the-art “Virtual Circuit” technology, each ToneStack GO unit is the digital mirror image of a real analog topology. Unlike other FX apps that try to copycat with EQing and other gimmicks, ToneStack GO recreates the intricate designs of the real thing. The result is a warm, responsive tone with the natural behavior you find in analog units.

Amazing Selection of Pro Amps & FX

ToneStack GO offers a huge range of amps, cabs & FX: sizzling tube amps, iconic stompboxes, pro-grade rack units, and high-end reverbs make ToneStack GO the most complete plugin suite on the iOS.

ToneStack GO also brings many powerful guitar FX to the iOS for the first time: polyphonic octaver, harmonizer, realistic spring reverbs, virtual-reel tape delays are just a few examples.

The Most Versatile Signal Chain on iOS

Why be limited with just 4 or 8 FX that other guys max you out at? ToneStack GO lets you run a whopping 64 amps & effects simultaneously* so you can let your imagination run wild.

For even more power, ToneStack GO includes a unique ABY unit not found in other FX apps. Split your signal anywhere: run dual amp setups, switch or blend FX chains, or multiplex your signal via frequency splitting – countless permutations, all up to you.

You can match any amp with any cab (all cabs have 3 mics with distance & position settings); you can insert any unit anywhere – even between amps and cabs like a true FX loop. Managing your signal chain is as easy as dragging and dropping an icon!

All the Pro Features of iOS

Enjoy the full power of the platform’s top MIDI and Preset systems. MIDI learn is super-intuitive thanks to ToneStack GO's interface: all the amp & FX controls are MIDI-programmable. Effortlessly create UNLIMITED banks and presets – share them at the touch of a button. ToneStack GO is an Inter-App Audio effect, and works in any Audiobus slot.

Stroke Machine for iPad, Setting up and Getting Started (video)

Having posted earlier about Stroke Machine here's a new video from the Sound Test Room on the app.

Nagual Sounds are crowdfunding and are also finalists in Berlin Music Week!

I met Nagual Sounds at Music Tech Pitch 4.5 back in April and I was really impressed by what they were doing. Their approach to gesture and movement based music making is pretty unique, so it's great to see them now crowdfunding their technology on Indiegogo. I wish them every success with that, and you can expect to see a few reminders from me about their campaign.

But if that wasn't enough they've also made it to the 10 finalists in Berlin Music week, and I hope they do really well there too. I think that they're going to be a start up to keep an eye on.

Stroke Machine still on sale, details plus useful links

You'll remember that Stroke Machine had a massive update to version 2.0 recently (details here), and at the same time went on sale at 50% of the normal price. Well it's still on sale right now, so if you haven't got it then why not grab a bargain!

Also, there's a great video from Disschord on Stroke Machine here.

iGendyn gets an update for iOS7

iGendyn, another Nic Collins app, gets an update after almost exactly 4 years! Whilst there's nothing new in the update, just a tidy up for iOS7 it is great that iGendyn isn't abandonware.

Of course it would be lovely to see some new features, or indeed new apps from Mr Collins, but for now I'm just pleased to see that he's getting his existing apps working again.

If you didn't know, iGendyn is free and worth a look if you're interested in something a bit more experimental.

electro-music 2014 Festival and Conference, 5-7 September, New York

You might remember Pull from this video. Well it's available now, but you will need a copy of Lemur to run it. You can buy Pull here.

Reactify in the 10 finalists for Berlin Music Week

Great to see Reactify (developers of the CTRL app which I interviewed them about some time ago) get into the finalists for Berlin Music Week. I would have loved to have been there this year but it pretty much clashed with everything sadly.

So good luck to the team at Reactify!

A bit of a thank you to SoundCloud

I've mentioned one of the projects I work on called SoundLab before, well we've been overwhelmed by the responses we've had from music tech companies to the work we're doing and have done our best to say thank you whenever possible. We were very lucky to get some help from SoundCloud and had to say a big thank you on the SoundLab site.

Another week and another round up ...

Well it feels like a lot has happened since my last round up post. But then it always seems to be busy these days, which is always good too. Anyway, here are the highlights as I see them from the last week.

I just realised that Mobile Music Sequencer - US is still free

I noticed that Mobile Music Sequencer had a little bug fix release, and whilst noticing that realised that it is still free. So I thought I should share that in case you didn't know or hadn't downloaded it whilst it has been free.

And another reminder for our panel at SXSW

I know that I've mentioned this before, but if you can do anything to help, i.e. by voting for it then that would be very much appreciated.

So if you think that mobile music should get a bigger voice at SXSW in 2015 then click here and vote for our panel, it would be just great to get some more visibility for the world of mobile music at SXSW, so if you think that's worthwhile, then click here and vote.

Thanks for your support.
